No morning,
 breaks this twilight mind,

No earthly voice, 

no touch, no kind;

Only her face, pale as the tomb,
Appears to light my spirit’s gloom.

She speaks in hush, in haunted rhyme,
A relic lost to death and time;
And though I reach, I cannot keep
What only walks when mortals sleep.

I live in dream—

alone, unseen—

Where love is ghost, 

and hope is keen.

And should I wake, I fear the day
Would steal her shade and drift away.
