Roots Reggae Music (feat. Don Carlos)

Qool DJ Marv's 2-hour mix dedicated to The Roots, originally broadcast on WURD Philly. Marv's thoughts on 2 supporting inspirations:

One - I was telling my mom about The Roots making it from playing music on a South Street corner to becoming a band that travelled all over the U.S. and the world and is now the house band of the new Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. She wasn't aware of them and their journey. One idea behind this is a Roots mix for the older generations.

Two - I imagined this scenario between a Dad and his son. Dad's hipping son to the hip-hop of his day. Thanks to a cool mix from a DJ named Marv, Dad played his boy the entire mix on a drive from Philadelphia to New York (because they scored tickets to the Tonight Show).

After each and every song, son asked "That's them too?"
"Yes, that's them too," smiled Dad.
"They sound so different, every song," the boy with the eager ears said.
"Well, they are musicians and their main voice, Black Thought, what a name eh(?), he's more than a rapper, he raps poetry, stories, information and encouragement."
"I thought rappers just talked about themselves and how they the best," said son.
"They are best at self-aggrandizement, I always needed more son," taught Dad.
(The Seed 2.0 starts playing)
"Oh who is this? Are we finished listening to the Roots," asked son.
"That's them too," beamed Dad while reaching for the + sign on the volume control.
"Wow, that's them too," said son with a voice that trailed off as he looked out the window and saw New York City on the horizon.
(Narrator: "Each time [son] asked "That's them too," in his mind's eye, heart & soul and deep in his consciousness, he was actually saying, "That's me too. That's me too. That's me, too. That's me.")

The Album's Concept: Everyone has a story, One story; The Monomyth. You are the main character. To understand the nature of story and what it means to us is to understand your own life path. Monomyth Separation is Part One of the Hero’s Journey. Will you accept the call to adventure? 

This album was born during my first big tour of Greece. I played 10 cities and travelled around the whole country playing my music. I received such great energy and feedback from fans that I decided I must make a project inspired by the trip, so I started digging! I collected records from around Greece; some traditional greek music plus other nice bits that I found. Whilst I was traveling, I was trying to come up with a concept that would tell the tale of a great journey. And of course, as I was in Greece ideas of myth and legend came to mind. So, when I returned home I researched a few things and stumbled across a theory by a philosopher and writer called Joseph Campbell. Basically, he wrote a book called “The hero with a thousand faces” in which he describes a theory that all great stories share; common elements - that they are all one story, a Monomyth. Is there a deeper meaning to why we tell stories? Are they a road map for our very existence, and a way to describe the cycle of life, death and rebirth? Due to this the album is very cinematic. I try to tell a story, but I want the listener to decide what that story is. The album will be best enjoyed as a whole so please find a quiet time to settle in and enjoy the ride.

SQUARE PEG IN A HIP HOLE VOL.1 (1967-73)

Since I started collecting records in the late 90s, I’ve looked out for diamonds in the rough. This has mostly been due to being skint, but also for the joy of finding a groovy little number on an LP of gushy ballads & MOR crud.
The fact that most (so called) cheesy artists have at least one gem waiting to be discovered, helps when you're buying most of your records from chazzas and car-boots.

Others are included here as although great artists in their own right, were at a point in their careers where they'd fallen out of fashion with the record-buying public and gone a bit psych/groovy/experimental. 
This normally resulted in them alienating their fan-base, getting ignored by the hipsters and falling between two stools.

So hopefully you can forgive the odd bit of over-singing or dodgy lyric and, as Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou once pleaded, listen without prejudice. 
These tunes run from 67-73, featuring psych, funk, exotica, baroque pop and freakbeat.
Vol. 2 will be covering 74-80, so I dare say we'll be heading down the disco.
