Ambujam Krishna writes "Nee poi azhaithu vaadi" to express Radha's longing for Krishna, as she pleads to her friend to bring Krishna to her. I heard this song  for the first time in a cassette (when they were still cool), sung by Unnikrishnan ji, and since then, it's been one of my all time favorites to sing.

Special shoutout to Sarvesh Karthick for his amazing percussions in this song, for Balaji Gopinath, my go-to mixing and mastering engineer, and to Lakshmi Ambady (instagram.com/layasthana), a new collaborator who designed the artwork to reflect the lyrics "Neeradum karai thanil, nithamum vandhenai, nerungi pesiyadhu ninaivu dhaan illayo..".

This piece is performed by 2016 IndianRaga Fellows Vinod Krishnan, Apoorvaa Deshpande, Santosh Baynes, Shankar Iyer, Chethan Anant and Karthik Ramasubramanian.

Piya Se Naina | Des thillana feat. Maalavika Sundar

Dance of the mystical snake amidst the sands and camels of the Arabian Desert! A Bharatanatyam dance by IndianRaga Fellows on the occasion of International Dance Day!

‘Aadu Paambe” literally means ‘dance snake’. This Bharatanatyam item is performed in the Al Badayer desert of Dubai. “Naadhar mudi mel irrukum” in raga Punnagavarali set to Adi talam is the well known composition of Pambaatti Siddhar, one of the famous Siddhas of Tamil Nadu who originally belonged to the Jogi tribe that caught snakes for a living. Here, the dancers depict the myriad roles of the supernatural snake: as the cobra adorning Lord Shiva’s head, as the bangles of Shiva’s consort Parvati, as the poisonous dweller of the underworld, and as the protector of Krishna. All the while they coax the snake to ‘uncoil and dance’.  

This innovative recital was created by several performing artists. Dancers Sophia Salingaros, Swathi Jaisankar and  Isha Parupudi collectively choreographed the item. The music production by Mahesh Raghvan was supported by Vinod Krishnan (Vocal), Akshay Anantapadmanabhan (Mridangam), Akash Gururaja (Violin), Mahesh Raghvan (iPad) and Vivek Ramanan (Konnakol).

Ghoomar, a popular Rajasthani dance form, is also a musical masterpiece sung by Shreya Ghoshal.  Beautifully blended with this is the crisp duet Jhana nana jhan, sung by the evergeen duet Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi. Both these songs are based in raag Brindavani Saarang. Original song features Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali mega-hit Padmaavat.

Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein | Kaise kahein alvida Cover by Vinod Krishnan feat. Bhavya Pandit

Carnatic notes, EDM, and western Violin create a fusion of harmony

The M.S.Subbulakshmi classic, Rangapuravihara, Muthuswamy Dikshitar’s kriti  in raga Brindavana Saranga, talam Rupakam,  presented here in a new age arrangement. Electronic music creates an effect of speed, while the kriti is sung in the traditional slow pace. The music starts with a simple synth melody; the vocalist then begins the Pallavi with mild violin harmonies in the background. The second vocalist joins in just after the Pallavi to deliver a catchy interlude of Swarams. The two vocalists go back and forth in the Anupallavi with a small violin solo in between. Then back to the Pallavi, and all the elements come together. The song ends on a high.

Team Shravan Kumar Ramani  (Vocals), Vinod Krishnan (Vocals),  Mayukha Kashyap (Violin) and  Nagaari (Music Arrangement and Production) infused this well known Carnatic classical song with western classical elements through Violin harmonies and contemporary instrumentation to create Rangapuravihara 2.0.

Abhogi 2.0 - the more you uncover the hidden layers in this raga, the more arise! Bringing you my next IndianRaga music video, a sequel to Swara Sadhana, with Apoorva Deshpande once again. This time we ardently explored the eclectic raga of Abhogi, amalgamated both in Hindustani and Carnatic. Which part of this song stood out to you? Comment below!

Abhogi to me, is a striking raga, with the way it's carried in different styles of music. It's captivating and intoxicating, despite missing Pa, the 5th note which is the midpoint in the musical scale. The Carnatic composition is "Sabapathikku," written by Gopalakrishna Bharathi, in the Tamizh language. The Hindustani bandish is an original composition by Apoorva, adding beautifully to the rendition about an abstract divinity in music. The lyrics are deep, meaningful, and idolize an abstract version of a musical deity.
