A conversation with the prolific and ever enthusiastic Tim Reaper.

He’s known for his immense work ethic both as an artist and as label owner for @futureretrolondon and has regular shows on @nts_radio and Jungletrain.

I’ve been wanting to speak to him for some time for many reasons but mainly because he makes incredibly authentic Jungle but comes from a time after the Pirate Radio era. We speak about his understanding of Pirate Radio and the impact it’s had on the music. We discuss the concept of nostalgia and the use of nostalgia when making Jungle music. We also discuss his love for the DIY ethos - it runs through everything he does, including making music on a laptop on the train with Ear Buds, to the way he runs his record label Future Retro London. it’s very grass roots and he uses it both as a platform for showcasing the best in modern Jungle but also to give younger and up and coming producers a place for early releases in their career. He’s very community minded and very DIY minded and authenticity runs through everything he does.

What's Going On?

Another EP I'm honored to release. "Visualise Your Desires" was a tune written by Bizzy and D-Lux, played by Bizzy on Format FM back in 1993. Musically, it has has similar vibes and samples to "Take a Deep Breath", but ends up much more melodic and relaxed. It turns out it was meant as part of a follow-up EP to "Take a Deep Breath" back then. We've tried to recreate that follow-up here by adding 3 more unreleased Bizzy/D-Lux collabs from the time: two distinct 93/94 remixes of "Take a Deep Breath" (one rolling, one rougher), and a stripped down extra dark non-amen tune called "Special to Me". 

Pressed on both colour and black vinyl. Out Friday, April 5th at 12 noon UK time on the 8205 Bandcamp.

💿 Lost Dubs 010 – ex per i mental (2008)

This track has been sitting on the shelf for years because it never really fit in anywhere. It has no melody, just rhythm and space. At the time I was deeply inspired by the drum programming of Sixteenarmed Jack and Krinjah — producers I respected not just for their skills, but as colleagues and friends. This was my nod to them.

Originally, this wasn’t even going to be part of my Lost Dubs series. LD010 was supposed to be a remix of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, but unlicensed vocals meant it couldn’t be released. That sent me back to the vaults, and one night after a long session out, I sat with this track again. I heard something in it that I had never noticed before — something I can’t quite explain. Talking about music is like singing about architecture, but it was there.

So here it is. ex per i mental. No melody, no polish, just an exploration of drums, patterns, and negative space.

I’m mostly sharing this here because I think people in this sub will dig it. Would love to hear what you think.

Subreachers is up for release 013. Really excited for this one to come out, after following Subreachers music for some time now we were very excited when they agreed to make a release with us.

A side - Atlas - is a track of several flavours. Starting off in a dreamy, spacey world, it builds with style before dropping into booming bass and dancefloor destroying breaks.

B side - Rammer - is a simply a vibe. Flowing break arrangements roll on top of deep bass, carefully placed atmospherics, and catchy vocal cuts.

The label was established in 2018 as a means to release the back catalogue of renowned Jungle Techno label Underdog Recordings, which ran from 1993-1995. It quickly expanded from beyond the original goal and now reissues sought after, rare and classic records from the Jungle, Rave, Bleep House, Techno and Jungle Techno genres.

The Vinyl Fanatiks aim is to track down and work with the original artists from the early 1990’s, to reissue their music on vinyl only, and to support the record hunters and vinyl diggers from around the world with quality pressings and superb mastering; a way to show respect and share the story of those that created these incredible records.

The vision is not to focus on the obvious artists of that time but to dig a little deeper and find those that came and went but their legacy still holds true to this day. Some of these producers only released one record and vanished soon after but their music still resonates into the 21st century, accumulating new audiences across the globe, far beyond the catchment of the UK pirate radios and muddy fields of 25 years ago. What happened to these artists? Its Vinyl Fanatik’s mission to find out!

Each record captures a moment in time, a vibe that was true and innocent from a period when music was far more synonymous with rebellion and anarchy than today’s finely polished productions and conformist club pop. This music itself bred on the outskirts of society, fuelled by the passion of the rave, its lineage stemming from the Acid House era of 1988. Often produced on minimal equipment, with minimal skills and knowledge, its audio blueprint transcends to new generations, a rawness that no expensive audio plug in could ever create in this present day.

Vinyl Fanatiks wants to pay homage to these young producers who forged the foundations of the multi-million pound EDM scene we have now. Each of these artists has their own tale to tell, their own memories to share. Limited by their own geographical status within the UK, they somehow still all managed to connect and influence each other, years before the internet, mobile phones and social media that we have today. But the music knew no limits and had no boundaries, transcending generations to this day.
