Deep within the core of their sprawling annex, The Institution’s top minds worked diligently at their insidious craft. Their hands moved swiftly, as they worked relentlessly with the sharp tools of their mind; warping words, images, and sounds to fit their malevolent narrative. Their objective was singular, complete control exercised from the shadows, profits reaped from beyond the veil of obscurity. Trust, that most hallowed principle, was nothing to them but a tool of manipulation, exercised to to legitimize their empire. The plan was simple, a classic diversion operated on a massive scale. The creation of an enemy, the eternal outsider, one against whom the public must remain vigilant. Composed of a paradox, the outsider posed no threat, yet could never be vanquished. Instead, his reputation and the shadow of his fearful influence would loom as a spectre, a shade of darkness designed to haunt the masses. Their fear would drive them into the protection of The Institution, shepherded in the manner of livestock. From there, the extension of their complete control would be assured. The machinations of its minds completed, The Institution began its program of domination in full, disseminating its precisely produced PROPAGANDA amongst the public.

Their message was erected upon the walls of their great city, proliferated throughout the mailboxes of its citizens, and across the webpages of it their tightly controlled digital network. Their message spread with viral efficiency. The citizens’ response was sublimely realised, a surge of fear through the populace, shepherding them into the arms of The Institute as they sought security in the face of the threat birthed in pure imagination. Security, The Institution was more than happy to provide; promising strength in the face of the mysterious menace. The Institution’s agents felt the power of their positions strengthen throughout the city, soon holding its highest offices in their grip, putting greater tools of control in their hands. Initiatives were passed, laws enacted, and the vaults of the city drained. The streets were the conduit of their fear, their PROPAGANDA campaign continuing in the fearful whispers of the citizens carrying the fear of The Outsider’s presence. The cycle was set, justification freely given out of fear. The Institute’s diabolic machinations ran as pure as the fear that coursed through the city.

The man pulling the strings behind the revered EATBRAIN imprint, JADE, returns for his second release of the year on his home label with the fiercely executed PROPAGANDA EP, featuring the veteran skills of RIDO. Following on from the much-acclaimed AWAKE EP, Jade powerfully demonstrates that he’s back in the studio and putting his veteran knowledge of what functions on the Eatbrain dancefloor to effective use. Delivering two fresh, tech-infused DnB bangers, along with a faster tempo VIP of fan favourite MAN EATING LIZARD DRAGON, as well as a further strut in the unfolding genre mechanism of slow and meaty neuro in SPY CAR, the PROPAGANDA EP delivers the Eatbrain manifesto in exquisite form. Full of the energy and spirit that’s driven the label to dizz heights, this is an unmissable chapter in both the imprint and the label boss’s journey.

Bass City Volume.1 is the brand-new LP series from Mainframe Recordings, the leading events brand from Austria and one which has helped shape the European market for nearly two decades. Spearheaded by label boss Disaszt, the imprint is renowned for its compilation series so the announcement that they’ll be launching another edition is sure to get fans waiting in anticipation for its drop. The ‘Bass City’ line of releases will exemplify the talent which the label has at its fingertips from across the local scene, pulling this into one release and giving newcomer artists a platform to flex their skills. Volume 1 does exactly that, delivering ten brand new tracks to launch from, and the range of music demonstrated throughout proves the combined weight of the Bass City and Mainframe brands.

Beginning the LP is Septon’s ‘Contact’, pushing forward with rolling bass notes and minimal percussion; following on is ‘Matches’ from Mofes, offering a different flavour through his heavyweight bass distortion. Meanwhile Cømpiler’s ‘Python’ drops you in and out of its structured bassline, whilst still taking you out into the deep. Division’s ‘Lost’ continues the dark vibes, pulling you in for the ride. Then Sequent & Skruff join forces with ‘Looking for You’, pushing a ruminating soundscape. Bowsar’s ‘Zero’ keeps the pace, followed in quick succession by the bass heavy world of Synged’s ‘Ombra’. Paul SG’s ‘Elephant in the Room’ proves why he’s been picking up heat recently with its crunching snares and Disaszt makes an appearance alongside Dotronix & Santa for ‘Moment’. 

Envy’s ‘Cruising’ draws the LP to a close, shutting the first chapter and leaving you wanting more as a listener. This is the first, but not the last of Bass City. With Mainframe at the helm, the platform is now set to unleash yet more brooding sounds into the market.

No Concept, Technique's boundary-traversing, category-defying production duo, are back. Following up from one of their biggest releases to date – the huge 'Be the 1' backed with 'Remember' – expectations are high, and with A-lister support already secured for this release, it looks like they've struck gold once again.

Hit play on 'Falling' and we're immediately transported back to the roots. The reggae samples, the reverb, the delay and the building rhythmical elements all combine to evoke that early crucible of sounds that spawned jungle. But we know how No Concept do by now. The clue's in the name, and just when we think we've got a handle on their sound, they twist up the style once again.

While the sub-genre pigeon-holers debate whether this is deconstructed two-step jungle or reggae-influenced jump-up, the rest of us will be too busy skanking out to the the incendiary drop. Savage bass timbres drive the energy onwards while rolling drums – drawing heavily on classic breaks – set the mood. If the ultra-slick production levels didn't give it away, this could easily be a revisited classic from the mid-nineties, and it's going to hit like a hammer-blow wherever it's played.

Still coming with something fresh every single time, if you didn't have No Concept on your list of buy-on-sight artists before this release, it's about time that changed.

One of the UK’s freshest new drum & bass talents drops his debut solo single on Critical, this one is simple mammoth! Emperor has been making waves over the past couple of years moonlighting with various camps but it was the keen ear of label boss Kasra that cottoned on early drawing him deep into the Critical ranks. If this new single is anything to go by, one of the best decisions Critical could have made.
The cinematic intro of ‘Begin’ is beautiful blend of strings, reversed fx and the sultry vocals of Georgia Yates who featured on the Enei album last year. All build to a haunting dropout before the next stage, an absolute nasty tech-stepping future roll-out that’s been getting Fabric in sweat these last few months. Twisted, uplifting and wonderfully emotive, this is another slice of Critical magic.
Next up and we’re treated to the vintage double-bass grooves of ‘She Said’. Another huge epic intro featuring a soaring vocal drifting over ethereal pads features here as hi-end percussion leads into the fattest bassline for a properly funked up dance floor workout. Think Roni Size ‘Brown Paper Bag’ or Peshay’s ‘Miles From Home’ for 2013...bad to the bone!
