The mists of the ancient grotto lay heavy upon the vale within, their tendrils cloaking and seeping around the outlines of vague shapes illuminated by what little light reached this place. Far flung trees, jagged boulders, and shards of ice littered the area, but within the depths of the mist lay something far less natural. A legend forgotten to time & magically bound to this place had begun to stir, called to action as the faintest rays of the sun scattered upon its rough worn hide.

An armory’s worth of weapons glinted in that glow, spear, swords, and more exotic blades alike embedded into a behemoth with the long memory of the warriors that had attempted to do it harm. Little more than toothpicks to the colossus, the weapons of the little people stung more with the audacity of their wielders than with the bite of the blade itself. It remembered long ago, for it had slept a kalpic length, that insolent mob that had rose against it only to be crushed beneath its hulking form. The descendents of those ingrates might still live, the monster reasoned, and so resolving it began to rise from its place of rest. It towered above the grotto walls, shaking loose the stone of their construction as it strode forth from the mists, regaining its strength amidst the light of day. No challenger would be tolerated, and no tribute would be enough, for the beast sought sole and absolute domination over the land once again, as it had many thousands of years before. This was how it had always been, and this was how it would be again. This was the way of the YOKAI.

SCREAMARTS make his EATBRAIN debut with YOKAI, a four track EP that follows in the wake of his collaboration with EATBRAIN heavyweight AKOV on the label earlier this year. With YOKAI, SCREAMARTS deliver an EP tied together by melodic and rhythmic themes that are presented in quadruple variation, spanning the range from strutting drum focused sequences to sonic atmospheres rendered through exacting & experimental sound design whilst each maintaining the ability to make an impact on the dancefloor. With YOKAI, SCREAMARTS thus present a new kind audio monstrosity to the EATBRAIN horde, leading them into new horizons for their first EP on the label.

Finally, after such positive reception to singles “We Will”, “Left Unsaid”, and “The Impact”, V O E are gearing up to release the full “Left Unsaid” EP with three previously unheard tracks that will knock your socks off. A duo who are truly moving from strength to strength and who have just wrapped up their European debut tour, V O E are an unstoppable force in the world of drum & bass. Offering both a unique recorded sound and live performance, the potential of V O E knows no bounds, so it was only right they found a home on Viper – and what a journey it’s been!

Now, finishing off their biggest year to date, V O E deliver the full “Left Unsaid” EP. New tracks like “More Than This” and “Sanity” show off Caroline’s vocal prowess, while “Our Own Way” features Tom on vocals, another in a slew of examples of the multitude of talents wrapped up within the V O E moniker.

Following hot on the heels of Sampler 1 which featured two brand new tracks from Cliques & Synth System, Viper are dishing up a second taste of what’s in store for the year’s most beloved compilation with Annual 2024 Sampler 2, this time featuring Trei and Des McMahon & WAVHART.

A longtime friend of Viper and a legend in the New Zealand scene, Trei’s “Peace & Quiet” is anything but. While a serene opening draws the listener in, the drop is loud & blazing in typical Trei fashion.

Representing DnB across the pond in the United States, Des McMahon teams up with newcomer WAVHART on “Ceres”. A minimal tune with maximum personality, this gentle roller is as elegant as it is eclectic, delivering a charming ambience with graceful intention.

The penultimate tease before the full compilation drops early next year, these two tracks are strong indicators of both the quality and variety of tunes in store for Annual 2024, only on Viper.

An observer stood upon a rooftop, gazing out over the metropolis that shimmered beneath him. To all outward appearances, it was an idyllic landscape. Busy & bustling, sure, but in ways that spoke of efficiency and the success of their kind. To them, it was a monument to their collective greatness that they could construct the steel-boned monoliths that reached upward to the heavens, but for the lone rooftop figure, a very different view was laid out below. His gaze cut through the superficial, and saw the city for what it truly was: a TORN PLACE.

Within his eyes those same monoliths represented not success in their glittering facades, but rather the greed, avarice, and corruption of those who dwelled within. He saw the rampant struggle to reach their peaks, the drive to triumph over one another, that also drove its champions to madness as they buckled under the weight of what they had done. As his gaze fell downwards the observer saw the destitute prostrate themselves upon the city’s streets, forced by some cruel twist of fate or the actions of those whom had climbed above. They gathered on these avenues as plaque within veins, their continued accumulation a warning sign of the city’s impending cardiac arrest. Alongside them streamed endless waves of vehicles, emitting choking clouds of black filth that spiralled into the air. So constant were they, that day and night a smog hung above the city, a poison that hung as a sword above all. As the observer took in these things, the city itself seemed to morph before his very eyes, changing its form in accordance with its monstrous nature. Faces upon billboards became malevolent visages with gaping mouths stretched wide in hunger. The towers, once glittering, unfurled before him like the tendrils of some primordial behemoth. All rushed towards him, consuming him within an endless expanse of darkness which was dispelled a moment later. The observer stood once more upon the rooftop, and the city shimmered once more beneath him. But for he who had seen its true nature, it could never be home again.

FOURWARD return to EATBRAIN with the TORN PLACE EP, their second release following their breakout Wolfe EP on the imprint. The four tracks within feature their sound in full, with the titular TORN PLACE providing grounds for it alone whilst other tracks feature a who’s-who of fellow heavy hitters on the EATBRAIN lineup. TORN PLACE opens the EP with cinematic flair, in which otherwordly narration and frantic basses occupy space in equal measure. FOURWARD combine with eatbrain bossman JADE on MAKE SOME, a driving track that pushes forward on the constant report of its stabbing bassline. REDPILL brings his horror infused sound to the table with DIGEST, a collaboration that calls on the pairing’s jump up influences amongst sinister saws. ELBOW features the sounds of L 33 alongside the FOURWARD crew and rises upon booming percussion before launching into a peak section of mechanized highs and rumbling lows. With the TORN PLACE EP, FOURWARD launch their multifaceted sound further onwards and upwards.
