This is wonderful! It was a joy working with you, Virgill!

About 11 years late to the party, I found this insanely beautiful rendition from Melissa Hollick. Originally a Chris Isaak song from his Forever Blue album. Melissa did a touching and tender, slow piano ballad which sucker punched everyone who played through this epic game in the Wolfenstein-saga. I never had a powerful enough PC back when the Wolfenstein New Order came out, and just earlier this year, had the opportunity to play the game. The ending got me too, and hard!

So, of course I just had to do my take on this song and sprinkle it with some magic 80s power ballad dust. I took the original recording from Melissa and separated the vocals from the backing track using lalal.ai. From there, I had to find a median tempo as the original is organically swaying quite a bit. I settled on 106 BPM and time-aligned her vocals to the grid, while trying to keep as much as the original feel and flow.

I also added a few bars here and there and shortened the intro. The structure of the song is a bit different from standard A-A-B-C-A... etc. so what's normally the chorus, became a second pre-chorus, with the Ooh section ending up as the real chorus. Furthermore I changed the chords up a bit, as the normal three/four chord progression became too tiresome for five and a half minute of slow power ballad.

Not too much going on in the backing section, a mixture of Yamaha TX816 (DX7) stereo Epianos, pads, and twinkle bells etc, as well as some Fingered Bass/Amped bass guitars layered with Nexus5 guitar patches and pads. Drums are a mix of Nexus5 80s drums and Zenhiser Retro 80s Drummer samples.

Håvard Caspersen laid down a series of Michael Thompson ambient guitars, strummed accoustic and some searing lead stuff in the background. Stellar work as usual!

Heja Havet

After a lengthy process of finding the right vibe, I finally found the vibe needed to beef up this gem of a song from Alex Ball. I started on it last year, but inspiration had left me and my daytime job took most of my time and energy.

I took Alex' original stems he sent me and worked around his Juno 106S arpeggio intro and set off from there. The vocals were grouped in two main and chorus mixes so I had little to go on, but chopped up here and there to make a longer intro with some effects. I also doubled them and fattened it all up so it pops a little bit more on the choruses. 

I kept a little of his original guitars, but added more synth and some samples I had lying around that fit the song (yes, I'm only faking it in the video... I can't play guitar to save my life, really! :P). The rest is pretty much some of my goto synths and drumkits to really get the groove kicking. Even added a modulation, which barely made it because Digital Performer and Izotope RX had some trouble pitch shifting the vocals well enough without artefacts and Alex sounding like a smurf!

Hopefully I made it slap some more. Enjoy rewinding your clocks to something inspired by 1988...ish!

Relaxing music and slight ASMR of nature sounds recorded in nature around where I live here south of Oslo. From the forest outside my place and the shores by one of the many hikes by the seaside in Moss. (More places to come later).

Simple reFX Nexus 5 setup with assorted pads, soft pianos and other synth sounds bathed in lots of internal and Valhalla reverbs.

Hawkeye is one of the first video game soundtracks I ever composed. The game itself was the first parallax full-screen platform game on the Commodore 64 created by the Boys Without Brains (BWB).
