Following a short break, Virtual Forest Records are back with a 6-track EP by Fluid Matter, one of the three label founders.
Located on the more bassy side of their universe, Fluid Matter operates here between territories of leftfield bass, post-dubstep, and electro with hints of techno and UK Funky. A release definitely darker than most, deeply rooted in club aesthetics and dedicated to showing specks of light shining in the murkiest night.

When Mani Festo isn’t designing the artwork for Club Glow - the collective he forms part of alongside Borai, Denham Audio and LMajor - or running his own imprint ‘Flightpath’, he uses his DJ sets and production to pay homage to the soundsystem-oriented music that made him. A real artist of the moment, the past couple of years have seen Mani Festo get the recognition he deserves, with many citing his prowess in capturing the darkly seductive essence of hardcore’s antecedents, creating something at once nostalgic and futuristic. 

Those searching for this fine balance will not be disappointed by Pathfinder EP, the next  instalment of Basement Trax: a series which focuses on club-fuelled Techno and Electro. ‘Powertriip’ is a full-bodied electro slammer, coloured by the metallic textures of an industrial soundscape. The title track continues with the same high-voltage pressure, this time with hi-hats that give it double-time energy. The B-side is about computer love: ‘Big Rooms’ is driven by a highly-processed acid melody whilst ‘Auto Sequence’ is a dizzying take on breaks with high-pitched arpeggios and deranged vocal chops that add to the track’s eeriness.

The record delivers upon the excess mantra & assembles bassy cuts of every flavour, across a glistening tracklist featuring nineteen unique producers from across the globe. The project was undertaken in support of Fareshare, a UK based charity that combats food poverty across the country.
In our time of spiralling inflation, the burgeoning cost of living crisis has made food poverty a daunting reality for so many. excess will donate all profits from the sales of this project to Fareshare, to make what difference we can to those in need during a time of unprecedented difficulty.

Contributing to this cause are a host of exciting artists, across a wide spectrum of underground bass music genres. Moving from ambient 2-step and bouncy UK funky rhythms, to raucous 4x4 grime and turbo jungle, this record navigates every corner of the bass music landscape, without stopping to take a breath. for a while now, I've been stuck on a creative seesaw trying to balance writing techy club bangers and 'good music that comes from the heart.' to me, this track symbolizes a step in the right direction for my project - a glimpse into what I'm capable of if I consciously dig deeper and write about something that I, alongside countless others, can resonate with. "Worthwhile" is about the fleeting essence of childhood and blissful ignorance that all humans encounter through the onset of adulthood. it's a bit of a happy-sad theme, which I find the track to convey through its ironically sad lyrics and cheerful/hopeful motif. it's not often that I sing over my tunes, but i'm really starting to enjoy this added layer to the creative process and will definitely explore this territory more in the future.

More Cowbell established themselves in summer of 2019, rising through the scene as a Facebook community, pushing all things percussive and bass driven within the UK techno realm. With support from Keysound Recordings, Rinse FM and Keep Hush, the collective has made its mark as the catalyst for reigniting a fractured scene. With this success under their belt, 2020 see’s the launch of their label. The first instalment of their release roster reflects the label’s heavy influence from early 2000’s 2step, as well as the post-dubstep era that merged the sounds of dubstep and techno.

Manchester based producer, Monir, has delivered a three track EP which explores the realms of 130BPM, taking influence from the raw, UK sounds of early Wen and Pinch, whilst incorporating the shuffle of 2-Step drums respective of El-B and Ghost Recordings. The first track, entitled ‘Collusion’, sets the EP’s tone with low-swung bass pressure and layered subs. Whilst the second track, Overpass, pays homage to the early FWD>>> sound with heavy, bouncing 808’s built for the system. The EP finishes off with a track entitled ‘The Instinct’, connecting 2-step inspired drums to aggressive vocal chops that encapsulate UK sound system culture.
