Following the smash hit “Summer Beach Edition Compilation” and Dinky’s positively carnivalesque “Time to Lose” EP, Visionquest’s latest collection showcases the label at its curatorial best. Offering up three elegant tracks from across the broad spectrum of dance-oriented electronica. The inspiring juxtaposition of David K, My Favorite Robot and Mirko Loko together on the Fall/Winter Collection works to create a remarkably unified whole, a versatile remarkable collection for the ensuing darkening months.

Following a recent slate of releases on celebrated labels like Freak n Chic, Tsuba, and Supplement Facts, France’s David K starts things off with some serious genre bending.  ‘Ghost Train’ is both lyrically driven and musically driving. Centered around a galloping, urgent synth line and snarling, disaffected vocals depicting the despondence and monotony of urban life. David K’s distinctive production is evocative of British Post-Punk artists such as Gang of Four, John Foxx or P.I.L., but through a post-modern techno vortex, this is like nothing you will hear this year!

An equally innovative, contemporary homage to the earliest experiments in romo-tech, celebrated remixers and recent addition to the Crosstown’s crew, My Favorite Robot’s ‘Forest Fires’ is reminiscent of Carl Craig, Human League and Benoit & Sergio rolled up one heady exotic blend, a truly unique and outstanding track that is already gaining a lot of expediential heat.

While Side A represents Visionquest bringing together the best in off-kilter electronic pop, on the flip side they return to their love of the outer-boundaries and experimental possibilities of the dance genre. A key component of the Swiss dance scene and recent member of the Cadenza roster, Lausanne native Mirko Loko extends Visionquest 07’s melancholic vibe with “Gloria,” a 13 minute odyssey that does for sound what CinemaScope did for film.  Sweeping, audacious, and nothing short of panoramic, in ‘Gloria’ a serpentine melody curls around almost imperceptible moments of micro-percussion worthy of the best of Villalobos. After several years perfecting and honing their art, the four musketeers: Seth Troxler, Ryan Crosson, Lee Curtiss and Shaun Reeves, collectively known as Visionquest, unleash their sonic imprint upon the earth. Its debut release is an introduction to new members of the Visionquest family as their great friends and production maestros Benoit & Sergio deliver the freaky and flavoursome ‘Where The Freaks Have No Name’.

Presenting the first release on the most eagerly anticipated new label of recent times, Benoit & Sergio are techno producers with great electro pop sensibilities with previously notable releases on Spectral Sound and a forthcoming well-hyped release on DFA in early 2011. Hailing from Washington DC, and dividing their time between there and Berlin, this three track EP highlights their comprehensive production skills perfectly.

The opening track ‘Walk and Talk’ is a classic example of romo-tech, a heart felt lament to an anesthetized lover; quintessential romantic techno. Contextualized rhythms and sounds pop in and out of the hypnotic groove as the ethereal vocal adds yet more hallucinogenic resonance to this masterpiece of a track. It has already proved popular, a staple in the sets of the Visionquest brigade this summer and a firm favourite with the crowds.

The title track of the E.P. ‘Where The Freaks Have No Name’, is another killer slice of electronic psychosis, undulating arpeggios and ominous sonic sound sledges sedate the rhythm and drive the . Finally the last opus ‘Day Residue’ evokes a great 80’s feel, almost Moroderesque in execution, clocking in at almost 10 minutes this is an epic piece of electronic music so beautifully made, it could have been made on the moon.

The Visionquest imprint will go beyond where music labels have gone before. With diversity and innovation at its heart, it is set to introduce a cream of talent including Footprintz, Tale Of Us, Niki Nakazawa as well as releases by the Visionquest themselves. With limited edition 12” artwork and extra surprises to be found within the sleeve, Visionquest will bring value back into music ownership and explore daring avenues, breaking down the boundaries from their own DJ style and embracing all types of music in their path.

1. Benoit & Sergio - Talk & Walk (VQ 001)

Visionquest have made a big impact in their first two releases on the imprint from Seth Troxler, Ryan Crosson, Lee Curtiss and Shaun Reeves. Now they fill up the dancefloor with light on ‘Dark Song’ EP from the compelling Tale Of Us.

Engulfing the listener in a luscious wall of sound from the onset of ‘Dark song’, Tale Of Us take an abstract and harmonious approach to their music. Understated beats and yearning vocals stretch the imagination to new heights in a new strain of house music engaging the senses through warm tapestries of sound.

Using similar low-end whispered sounds that resonate in a deep place, ‘Circle Of Love’ is a magnetic slice of dancefloor music. Its skipping beats and rippling bass enthralls but it’s the sensual vocal that gives ‘Circle Of Life’ a special edge and adds an element of mystery. ‘Valiant’ completes the package with an epic dose of bubbling beats and pads, inventing a masterpiece hybrid of techno and deep house leaving you spellbound.

Tale of Us are Berlin-based DJ and production partnership Karm and Matteo who are currently re-writing the rulebook for deeply moving, emotional electronic music. Together they share a sonic vision that pulls together elements of house and techno with influences from pop, nu-disco and even rock music. While all of their productions are instantly recognisable as Tale Of Us, these range from straight-up dance floor jams to low-slung ambient tracks and more abstract compositions. While both originally hail from North America, Karm was born in Toronto and Matteo in New York, they moved to Italy as children, which is where they met and formed the close working bond that they now share.

At present they are based in Berlin, an inspirational frontier, which has given them numerous opportunities to build relationships with fellow musicians who share their unique musical outlook and resulted in this special Visionquest release. Prior to this, Tale Of Us tracks could be found on labels such as Barraca Music, Cocoon' and Life & Death (the Tale Of Us remix of Thugfucker ‘Disco Gnome’ on Life and Death was hailed by Mixmag as one best records of 2010) and have put out various remix collaborations with fellow Visionquest label mates Shaun Reeves & Ryan Crosson. On this production Coyu is inspired by his early club visits in Barcelona and it works perfectly as a throwback and tribute to the history of house/techno. Goodbye 2017, hello future! Monaberry proudly present their final release of the year with the one and only Upercent. New to the label but no stranger to our record collections, the Valencian artist has made a name for himself over the last few years on labels such as Diynamic, UponYou, Snatch!, Sincopat and Culprit among others with a spell-binding sound that’s consistently rich in emotion and hypnotically heavy in weight… A sound that fits the Halle house label perfectly.

Proof is in the listening; ‘Fastic’ is an eight minute mystical movement that ripples with layers and dynamics. The shimmering percussion, the bluesy guitar twangs, the far-away vocal yearns, the gentle enveloping ebbs and flows with elements of tribal, tech and prog and fat dollops of cosmicity.

‘Badarra’ flips the groove coin with a much denser bass/kick relationship. Palpitating, pumping and progressively developing momentum element by element, key transition points include the molten chimes, the scattering percussion, the strange humanisations and the black hole breakdown that sucks deep deep deep into the silence before catapulting you back into the insistent pumps and added Spanish strums. Weighing in at almost nine minutes, once again it’s an open and shut case of full immersion. And Monaberry wouldn’t have it any other way.

What a way to sign out for another exciting year in music. See you in the future…

Every mystical journey eventually comes to a fork in the road. The seeker of life’s destiny has two options: remain satisfied with whatever level of consciousness he has already attained, or push forward into ever-new domains of promise and possibility. 2014 sees dance music’s best-known spiritual pilgrims, the Visionquest trio of Ryan Crosson, Lee Curtiss, and Shaun Reeves, bravely embarking upon that wondrous journey. Each member of this celebrated DJing and production team contributes a distinct yet interlocking vision that together forms a seamless, organic whole. Just think of Crosson’s enthusiastic shuffle, Lee’s soulful stare, Shaun’s soft touch. Everything they craft has the same unmistakable flair: slow-burning, shape-shifting, expansive techno and house marked by compositional elegance and unabashed pop hooks.

Although long-time partner and co-conspirator Seth Troxler has stepped aside to pursue other projects, 2013 was the biggest year ever for the four. Inspired by the passing of the Mayan calendar, the group embarked upon Visionquest 13, 13 dates where the boys not only played together the whole night, but curated a true multimedia experience. From London to Buenos Aires, from the American hinterland to the Chilean wilderness, Visionquest 13 was a Freudian trip into the deepest recesses of the Detroit rave unconscious, what Ibiza Voice described as a “collective expedition into the depths of your soul”—but with a sophisticated, modern twist.

Their accomplishments are well-known and too many to list. For starters: a critically acclaimed 2011 Fabric mix; year-defining hit remixes for artists as diverse as Kiki, Wareika, Tracey Thorn, and David Lynch; showcases and dates in the biggest clubs and festivals around the world; and the creation of a now iconic-label that’s played host to dancefloor weaponry from the likes of Benoit & Sergio, Life & Death, Dinky, and Laura Jones—all this while each member maintained significant individual production and DJ careers. But, by definition, no journey dwells in the past. So in 2014 they launched Visionquest Special Editions, a limited-release, vinyl only label. Evoking the experimental sounds of the European techno avant-garde that first inspired the boys back in Detroit, the debut release, remixes of Montreal songwriter Quilla, features a stunning collaboration between Shaun and long-time hero Ricardo Villalobos. With Visionquest Special Editions we see the group at home at a breezy, gentle afterparty, not just igniting the club. As Visionquest winds around the corner into their bright future, they remain open and excited for what lies ahead.
