Oslo-based collective & label, Det Gode Selskab hit launch with another extensive release this autumn. The compilation is presented by five characters, the “Slimey Gumballs”. Each of the gumballs will represent their own sector of the compilation, with one being released into the wild on a bi-weekly basis from 22nd October onwards. Each of the gumballs varies in colour, flavor and personality and is a nod of acknowledgment towards the acid smiley of the past rave era. Floaty ethereal synths maneuver their way around a snappy electro body in “Wide Pop” from Philipp Boss & Kuyateh.

ACID HEROES (Xtract)

The ever inventive and constantly challenging VQ imprint once again expand their sonic spectrum by releasing a superb EP of enchanting, harmonic dance music from the other side of the dancefloor.  Never one to be pigeon holed for one particular sound the latest VQ release by Merveille & Crosson pushes the envelope further as they produce a sublime three track E.P. of beautiful, innovative electronica, but still with one eye on the dancefloor.

Ryan Crosson is one quarter on the eponymous Visionquest crew, an impeccable DJ and renowned producer he has recorded for such labels as M_nus, Wagon Repair, Spectral and Supplement Facts amongst others. France based Cesar Merveille is an irrepressible member of Luciano’s Vagabundos crew, and regularly records on Cadenza. Old friends and cohorts Ryan and Cesar pooled their collective talent to make a unique debut album for Visionquest. This 12” is the first half of a double single release. The second part is released early next year with both parts comprising in a Merveille & Crosson artist album, released shortly after the second single on Visionquest.

Cesar & Ryan have utilized elements of electronica, jazz, deep house, ambient and techno in this EP, all expertly woven into this radiant tapestry. The A side features ‘DRM’; loose tribal drum patterns underpins the lazy groove as the urgency of the driving rhythm pushes the track forward whilst the achingly, soporific marimba delivers a haunted, melancholic song to the soul. Evocative and mesmerizing ‘DRM’ is an exquisite work of beauty, suitable for dancefloors and soundbathes alike.  On the flip ‘Orca’ is an overwhelming heady blend of effervescent chimes and xylophones rising and crashing as the energy swells amongst the percussive waves as they rise and fall only to crash and breach around the syncopated rhythms of the shore.  The omnipresent sub bass serves as the anchor as the drums and hi-hats deliver us to the dancefloor with an uncontrollable immediacy! Finally ‘The Day You Left’ is the EP’s swansong.  A clever piece of heavenly sonic sculpture, its transcendental, illusive nature is sublime. A beautiful piece of wonderment and awe that is as equally reminiscent of Global Communication 76 14 as of Jean Luc Ponty, which is no mean feat.

A fantastically executed and accomplished EP what bodes well for the forthcoming album.

vi•sion quest (noun): a search for personal communication with the spirit world. 

Every mystical journey eventually comes to a fork in the road. The seeker of life’s destiny has two options: remain satisfied with whatever level of consciousness he has already attained, or push forward into ever-new domains of promise and possibility. 2014 sees dance music’s best-known spiritual pilgrims, the Visionquest trio of Ryan Crosson, Lee Curtiss, and Shaun Reeves, bravely embarking upon that wondrous journey. Each member of this celebrated DJing and production team contributes a distinct yet interlocking vision that together forms a seamless, organic whole. Just think of Crosson’s enthusiastic shuffle, Lee’s soulful stare, Shaun’s soft touch. Everything they craft has the same unmistakable flair: slow-burning, shape-shifting, expansive techno and house marked by compositional elegance and unabashed pop hooks.

Although long-time partner and co-conspirator Seth Troxler has stepped aside to pursue other projects, 2013 was the biggest year ever for the four. Inspired by the passing of the Mayan calendar, the group embarked upon Visionquest 13, 13 dates where the boys not only played together the whole night, but curated a true multimedia experience. From London to Buenos Aires, from the American hinterland to the Chilean wilderness, Visionquest 13 was a Freudian trip into the deepest recesses of the Detroit rave unconscious, what Ibiza Voice described as a “collective expedition into the depths of your soul”—but with a sophisticated, modern twist.

Their accomplishments are well-known and too many to list. For starters: a critically acclaimed 2011 Fabric mix; year-defining hit remixes for artists as diverse as Kiki, Wareika, Tracey Thorn, and David Lynch; showcases and dates in the biggest clubs and festivals around the world; and the creation of a now iconic-label that’s played host to dancefloor weaponry from the likes of Benoit & Sergio, Life & Death, Dinky, and Laura Jones—all this while each member maintained significant individual production and DJ careers. But, by definition, no journey dwells in the past. So in 2014 they launched Visionquest Special Editions, a limited-release, vinyl only label. Evoking the experimental sounds of the European techno avant-garde that first inspired the boys back in Detroit, the debut release, remixes of Montreal songwriter Quilla, features a stunning collaboration between Shaun and long-time hero Ricardo Villalobos. With Visionquest Special Editions we see the group at home at a breezy, gentle afterparty, not just igniting the club. As Visionquest winds around the corner into their bright future, they remain open and excited for what lies ahead.
