Data 3 - Subatomic

Metalheadz rounds off an incredibly successful year with an EP from core label producer Mikal, who also brings some friends along for the ride.  

META013 is a project that shows the versatility of Mikal. His take on the Headz sound includes steam train steppers, halftime dancehall grooves and classic reinforced era jungle. The EP is an expansive project that includes collaborations with Break and Nymfo, from South Country UK across to Holland.

The dancehall and dub parts of Mikal’s armoury are strongly on display here - his contribution to the long lineage of dancehall influenced drum n bass is a confident- take no prisoners attitude,  typical Metalheadz.

The package is broken down as a four track vinyl EP, with an exclusive digital only fifth track. There is also an accompanying video for the lead track. 

The EP is five tracks worth of intent and is the tip of the iceberg for Mikal’s future in terms of sound and presence on the label and we keenly await his next outing.

Next up from RAM Rewind we have a track from one of the best known trios in drum and bass. Having recently won the award for 'Best Producer' at this year’s drum and bass arena awards, ‘Façade’ demonstrates exactly why they’ve received such recognition across the community.

Noisia are an extended part of the RAM family and we’re pleased to reintroduce you to a track which still stands as an integral part of the imprint’s discography.

This track was made limiting myself to one particular synth (and drums) and designing all patches from scratch. 

The synth in question is the Arturia Mini V3, an emulation of the classic Minimoog Model D. This is a very simple synth with 3 oscillators and one low-pass filter. It features very limited modulation capabilities and only has basic (virtual) analog waveforms. If you want clean sounds, it is actually quite nice, like for making songs reminiscent of chiptune. 

One particular oddity of this synth is that the mod wheel controls all modulation (well, there are only two possibilities), and frankly, this doesn't play so nice with modern audio workstations.

One feature worth mentioning is that sound from an external source can be routed back into the synth's filter. I use it in one instance to run a sound produced by one instance through effects and back into the filter of a second instance. (How decadent.)

Anyway, it was a fun exercise and I learned a few things along the way.

The title references the fact that the original hardware was a monophonic synth. One sound at a time.

Following their Top 10 hit ‘Control’, drum & bass duo Matrix & Futurebound commence a new deal with FFRR with the single ‘Happy Alone’ which impacts on November 13th.

Featuring vocals from the American musician V. Bozeman who recently featured in the hit TV show Empire and has previously collaborated with Timbaland, ‘Happy Alone’ erupts from Bozeman’s soulful, piano-backed introduction into a rush of uplifting drum & bass.

Prior to teaming up in 2007, both members had enjoyed success in their own right. Matrix first broke through with the techno-infused ‘Sleepwalk’ album on Virus Recordings before crashing into the charts at #6 with ‘It’s Love (Trippin’)’ under his house pseudonym GoldTrix. Meanwhile, Futurebound built his reputation on labels such as Moving Shadow, Infrared and Timeless before launching the influential Viper Recordings in 2004.

The duo’s first album together, 2007’s ‘Universal Truth’ on Metro / Viper Recordings, offered a skillful fusion of epic melodic soundscapes with heavyweight dance-floor production and original vocals.

Their chart breakthrough came with two Top 30 hits with ‘All I Know’ and ‘Magnetic Eyes’ before ‘Control’ became their biggest hit to date. The follow-up ‘Don’t Look Back’ represented their fourth consecutive track to be playlisted at Radio 1.

The pair have subsequently delivered major remixes including  Oliver Heldens x Becky Hill’s ‘Gecko (Overdrive)’ and Tinie Tempah / Jess Glynne’s ‘Not Letting Go’ (both #1 hits) plus Eric Prydz’s ‘Liberate’, Seven Lions’ ‘Strangers’ and Labrinth’s ‘Let It Be’. Creamfields, Global Gathering, Secret Garden Party, Nocturnal Festival, Let It Roll and Brixton Academy have been just some of the highlights of their many live shows.

Technique’s annual summer compilation has become one of the highlights of the label’s release schedule and this year’s edition is no exception.

Technique Summer 2016 features 37 tracks from across the drum & bass spectrum hand picked by Drumsound & Bassline Smith.

The label bosses themselves roll through with the fluid jungle of the Solah-laced “Cover Our Eyes”, the no-holds-barred funk of “Rise of the Black Panther” and their epic dubwise collaboration with Digital, “First World Problem”.

And then there are the big name cameos from artists not normally seen under the Technique banner. Brookes Brothers and Danny Byrd team up with the uplifting drive of “Climb High”, matched in hands-in-the-air power by the euphoric piano of The Prototypes’ “Don’t Let Me Go”. J Majik recruits 78° and Louie Cabrera for “Day I Left” and “Elastic” respectively. And the mighty DJ SS drops an emotively claustrophobic killer in the form of “Expression”.

Of course, the regular regiment of Technique soldiers are present and correct too. Tantrum Desire delivers the tech atmospherics of “Tesoro”, while Kronology subverts the big-room sound with the unpredictable twists and turns of “Everyday”. L Plus backs up rumbling bass and popping beats with entwined chord patterns in “Invincible”. Plus Document One show two different sides to their character, with the jazz funk vibe of “Klaxon” and the paranoid sci-fi of “Say What”.

And we’re nowhere near covering everything this album has to offer. From the jungle tear-out of Brian Brainstorm’s “Badman Selector” to the minimal magic of Oder’s “Mesmerize”, via the liquid purity of Salaryman’s “He Knows”, this is a journey that needs to be experienced. Any selection that takes you straight from Fade’s “Disco Ball” into Conspire’s “Glare of Brass” then to Salaryman’s “Synthesized Melancholia” is making a statement about the strength in depth of the D&B genre right now.

If all that wasn’t enough, all the tracks are featured on two continuous mixes by Kronology.

The first album sampler features Drumsound & Bassline Smith’s “Rise of the Black Panther” and is available now exclusively in the Beatport store and from the Technique shop from June 10. The second sampler includes Document One’s Klaxon and you can get your hands on in from June 24 in the Technique shop. The full album is released on 1 July but you can pre-order it now on iTunes and all other stores.
