Patricia Kokett – Psykhe [Isla to Isla, 2023]

Patricia Kokett follows up two critically-acclaimed esoteric techno releases on Knekelhuis (Bizarr [2020], Diabel [2018]) with a new EP – Psykhe – to be released by Isla to Isla on the 25th of april 2023 as a 12” vinyl and digital.

Psykhe sees Lithuanian musician and composer Gediminas Jakubka continuing to explore his own distinct sound, but taking it in a new direction: a step away from the euphoric new age dance floor and into a significantly murkier, more precarious territory. Psykhe is meant as a sonic simulacrum of the artist's psyche during the pandemic – a quickened mind bred by a decelerated world. In that and other senses, the record is a modern take on the ‘80s/’90s Detroit ethos of dance music created for an illusory dance floor.

Incidentally (or not!), Psykhe is much more electro-based and darker – intent on delivering catharsis, but not euphoria.

Medical Records continues it’s unearthing of extremely rare singles in it’s Electroconvulsive Therapy series. Once again, teaming up with Crispy Nuggets blog (crispynuggets.blogspot.com), we have assembled yet another collection of long out of print and underground singles and rare tracks. This compilation includes 3 complete A + B sides from 7” singles + 4 other rare songs (2 from cassette, 1 A side of a 7”, and 1 track featured on a rare 80s compilation LP). All original tracks are impossible to find for less than a mint on the collector’s market. The first 2 tracks are by Belgium’s Tipical Me from the Claustrofobian b/w Pope No Hope 7”. These 2 tracks are perfect synth pop in every way. The second artist is UK’s Secession, and we have included their debut 7” released in 1983. Though known for their later more electronic based pop and dance tracks, these two tracks display their earlier dark beginnings with chilling guitars and a more early 4AD aesthetic. Both tracks from the 7” are included. The third artist is France’s Leidenschaft who released one lone 3-song cassette in 1986 with 2 of the tracks featured here. Leidenschaft could loosely be compared to early Clan of Xymox with French cold wave leanings. The 2 cuts are very atmospheric and lovely indeed. Back to the UK, we included the wonderfully minimal A + B sides of the rare 1984 7” by Black Fantasy. Original copies of this single have been selling for insanely high prices these days. 2 more tracks were also included on this compilation which complete the theme nicely. V.U.D. was an Italian outfit who recorded a track entitled “Look!” which was included on the “First Relation” v/a compilation LP released in 1983 on Mask Productions and curated by Lisfrank. Quirky and undeniably catchy, we absolutely adore this track as will everybody who hears it. The last track included on this LP is the A side of the rare 1984 7” by UK’s Almost Alone entitled “Blue City”. Dense and atmospheric synth pop with definite New Romantic tendencies, this track is a perfect closing track for this diverse collection. This collection will certainly appeal to fans of rare minimal synth, early synth pop, or EBM. This compilation allows anyone who has desired to have one or all of these quite expensive tracks on vinyl in the best sound quality possible. Additional mastering by Martin Bowes at the Cage, UK. This compilation and reissue is specially prepared for Record Store Day on high-quality 180gram blue and magenta “half and half” colored vinyl. Limited edition.

"[...] Formed from an ascetic palette of untreated beats and single-frequency synths, The Neurobiology Of Moral Decision Making flaunts Fell and Lázár's microscopic attention to detail throughout, with each track drawing your attention to a tiny parameter variation. Unlike the pointillist studies of Ryoji Ikeda and Florian Hecker, the results are unexpectedly itchy, funky and exhilarating - as the press release says, this neuroscience is "almost compatible with footwork". Amid all the odd numbered time signatures and disorientating multitimbral drones, the disc works a sincere homage to the intricate web of kick drums and snares of Chicago dance music.

When Autechre and Aphex Twin deployed loops of ball-bearing sounds a decade and a half ago, in "VI Scose Poise" and "Bucephalus Bouncing Ball" ,things could slip up and fall flat. This self-conscious IDM was, as Matthew Ingram put it in The Wire 349, "the worst of both worlds, like pipe-smoking breakdancer". Here, in the untitled seventh track, the same rhythmic pattern spawns five minutes of compelling material, a rapid dancefloor cut in which Fell's beat suddenly drops midway through, leaving Lázár's synth flickering alongside a flurry of invisible trainers. The album retains a focus on the danceable, at least until the 12 minute finale, whose strobing and pitched-up snares from the highest bpm of the entire set. Like Hans Christian Andersen's gory tale of the red shoes, this flurry of hyper-rhythmic noise finally passes the bounds of footwork altogether, pointing towards a mechanical state in which human dance is impossible. [...]"

We’re happy to announce a unique collaboration between one of our long time favorite artists, In Aeternam Vale and Anneq, a stunning young Madrid-based vocalist originally from Minsk, Belarus. In Aeternam Vale and Anneq met in 2011 and began to collaborate in 2015. In Aeternam Vale, originally from Lyon, has been making synthesizer based electronic music since the early 80s, when he began to self-release many of his recordings on cassette. As the years went on his cold and caustic synthpunk sound, often primitive and hypnotic evolved into rhythmic, throbbing music for the dance floor, his own unique style of techno. On this record, In Aeternam Vale and Anneq come together to create two very different versions of the same track, one fit for the club and the other a more intimate version, for quiet listening at home. Je Ai Dissous, the opener, is a dark smoky track with a hypnotic, cyclical underlay reminiscent of early industrial music while the Page R Version of the same track trandscends the floor and becomes completely filmic. Anneq’s seductive vocal is suspended in a beatless, cavernous void. Side B opens with Tendencia, a very classic catchy minimal wave style track, sung in Spanish. The V6 version of Tendencia again focuses on Anneq’s voice set in a darker, slower more atmospheric melody. The four tracks culminate in an elegant and thoughtful collaboration from these two strong talents that complement one another so well. The “Je Ai Dissous” EP is pressed on 160 gram deep purple “spilled” inside electric blue transparent vinyl, limited to 999 copies and housed in a gloss printed sleeve. Release date: November 15th.
