𝙉𝙚𝙭𝙩 𝙀𝙫𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣

Abstract 

The audio paper explores the history of an underground London event, The Chronic 
Illness, and its core venue, The Dungeon of Polymorphous Pan, in the basement of 
a formerly squatted bookshop on Holloway Road. The first part dives into a brief 
history of the occupation of the building and Fung Neo’s (the curator) initial ideas and 
meetings with other artists, which led him to organise the first event. In the second 
part, which has the form of an interview with the curator Fung Neo, we will talk about 
the event and the venue in the wider context of London’s squatting scene and what 
role it has played in his PhD research in interlacing fungi and post-internet 
performance art. The third party invites us right to the middle of the very recent 
event, The Chronic Illness XX, where I ask random attendants and key resident 
performers about their experience encountering Polymorphous Pan. The music 
played in the audio paper is a collection of field recordings of acts performed at The 
Chronic Illness XX and an audio extract from video records of performances and 
random rehearsals in The Dungeon Of Polymorphous Pan since 2016. This is the 
shortened version for submission. The extended version will encompass more 
questions for the curator and interviews with attendants and will be featured in a 
radio show on Threads Radio in January 2024.

Press Release: By the Oxbow lakes following the old course, making binaural field recordings. Eventually I reached the river Aire by calculating the sizes of several ancient audio pyramids, with trigonometric functions. Nearby Tom Pudding boats are jostling with the night coal, surrounded by phosphorescence noise wash. The sides of the pyramids are along the four cardinal points of synthesisers, measured with the stars and the rising and setting sun.
