What is WAMONO?
It's the finest in Japanese jazz, funk, soul, rare groove, and disco, developed since the late ’60s. 

When I first discovered the WAMONO compilation series, I was beyond excited. The first volume alone was a treasure trove of rarities. Each volume has its own approach to the musical diversity of Japan, a scene that continues to surprise even the most dedicated diggers. And truly the diggers, people behind this series are the best proof of its quality!

Active as a professional DJ in Japan since the late eighties, DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite is also a renowned remixer, compiler and producer. An avid record collector and an expert of the Wamono style, Yoshizawa published the Wamono A to Z records guide book in 2015 which instantly sold-out. The book unveiled a myriad of beautiful and rare records from a highly prolific, but still then unknown, Japanese groove scene.

After many years working as a record buyer for several stores, DJ Chintam opened his own Blow Up shop in 2018 in Tokyo’s Shibuya district. A member of the Dayjam Crew and a specialist of soul, funk, rare groove and disco music, Chintam is also an expert of the home-brewed Wamono grooves. He supervised and wrote the Wamono A to Z records guide book together with Yoshizawa.

From the first compilation, it was my strong intention to blend a mix entirely from the compilations of one label. WAMONO is more than just a collection of tracks; it’s a testament to the groove-driven spirit of Japanese musicians during their most creative period. Some of these compilations are not online yet, so there's a chance to listen to them also this way.

Dreems is the solo project of Sydney DJ Angus Gruzman – a man who can fairly claim responsibility for inspiring kids towards the dance floor for over a decade. As Gus Da Hoodrat, he was a long-serving member of the Bang Gang party crew and he’s ensuring the good times continue with his involvement in the Motorik label and the regular parties they throw. 

His mix for i-D is the kind of journey that only someone with an impressively eclectic record collection could take you on. Angus describes it as a “mix that was made with a certain rug in mind (it knows who it is). There was no more than a chair and a packet of empty crisps on the rug that I was playing to that evening. It's an intimate mix formulated in my mind for the open space of your mind. It’s 100% vinyl, 100% vibe and 100% me on the Persian rugs.”

Trusted party-maker, Vlad Fisun has been an active DJ for nearly 30 years, exploring the electronic music landscape from the bloom of the '90s to the present moment, with parties all over the world – from abandoned military sites in Kyiv and Kharkiv to bars in Hawaii and Sri Lanka, from European waterholes to the Black Rock Desert with the Ukrainian Burning Man Community. 

Vlad has also contributed to media outlets such as Mixmag, Vice, BBC, and AP, and served as Editor-in-Chief of Playboy Ukraine.
