Summer is here and it's an incredibly hectic time for me, with a heavy schedule of gigs highlighed by a historic 12 hour open to close solo set at Tomorrowland in Belgium, along with finishing the much awaited 2013 city series compilation and working on our special Global DJ Broadcast Sunrise Set and Coldharbour Day.

To get you warmed up for all of that, plus as something to keep my mind occupied while struggling to sleep lately, I've put together another exclusive Soundcloud Summer Mix for you all, this time being 2 hours long. 

Much like the Spring edition, consider it as a mini "best-of" GDJB from the past couple of months, along with a couple of oldies that consistently get requested..

Markus Schulz - Soundcloud Mix Summer 2013

In between this summer of madness consisting of 12 hour Tomorrowland sets, Ibiza residencies, multiple festivals and Global DJ Broadcast Sunrise Sets and Ibiza Summer Sessions, one of my main tasks over the past 10 weeks was crafting something special for this year's Coldharbour Day.

At the end of July each year, the Coldharbour family unite for our annual Coldharbour Day celebration - together with our friends at Afterhours.fm - to create a marathon radio event dedicated entirely to the fans - with special all-Coldharbour sets and showcases of producer talents. 

My job each Coldharbour Day is to create a 4 hour set - which is the longest studio mix I put together every year. I spent a lot of  time attempting to get the vibe right, as well as striking the right balance of curent favorites, unheard / unreleased material and classics from days gone by.

Markus Schulz - Coldharbour Day 2013

It has only been a week but even now I'm still not sure how I did it. The challenge of performing a 12 hour open to close solo set at an outdoor festival, let alone one of the absolutely biggest of them all in Tomorrowland, was undoubtedly one o f the biggest I faced in my career.

For this month's Global DJ Broadcast World Tour we bring you highlights of the set, including some juicy IDs at the start, and approximately the last 45 minutes of the 12 hours where I got to dig out some classics I don't get much of an opportunity to play live that often.

My sincere thanks to everyone at ID&T and Tomorrowland for the opportunity to play at the festival, and most of all to all the fans who attended and supported me so well, especially those two stayed with me for the entire 12 hour duration.

Another Ibiza season is in the books, and another book of memories has been created. As you can tell by the supporting picture, I didn't want that sun to go down!

Every year, when closing the Global DJ Broadcast Ibiza Summer Sessions season, I dedicate the final episode to the fans, playing a 2 hour mix entirely of requests containing their personal favorite tracks and moments of the summer.

52 weeks, 52 radio shows, transmitted around the world on 60 + leading stations, in which Paul van Dyk brought over 600 tracks to the ears of VONYC Sessions ever-ready listenership in 2013. That though was the easy part! The audio artisan’s end-of-year challenge is to refine those playlists down into the most requested best of the best. From twelve richly packed months of Radio tracklists, he’s landscaped those first-among-equal tunes into ‘the-year-that-was’ mix – PvD’s definitive 2013 encapsulation. 

That Jan-to-December sonic-ride naturally includes tracks from some of electronic music’s best-known practitioners. W&W, Ferry Corsten, Omnia, Cosmic Gate and many others are joined on its discs by newer-bloods, as ‘VONYC 2013’ delivers the latest/greatest studio-ware from the likes of Protoculture, Maarten de Jong, Estiva and Las Salinas. After another standout VANDIT year ‘VONYC Sessions 2013’ also kisses the speakers with a wealth of the label’s audio. Sporting 2013 floor-quakes from Judge Jules, Alex M.O.R.P.H., Giuseppe Ottaviani and Shato & Paul Rockseek, naturally there’s also much from the maestro himself. 

So sit back, hit up that Play button and enjoy the 2013 ride all over again!
The first mix heads straight into the thick of it, flashing back to summer highs with PvD & Arnej’s techno-rific ‘We Are One 2013’. From there van Dyk reaches multiple points on the stylistic compass, building sonic mood and range into the mix’s map. Las Salinas’ ‘Say Another What’ brings tech eclecticism, whilst the deep-dive of ‘Immersion’ from Omnia and Alexander Popov’s autumnal ‘Moscow Subway’ splice in deliciously moody prog-trance shades. 

Sweeping up the midsection comes Alex M.O.R.P.H. & Jerome Isma Ae’s propellant ‘Bang’, hotly chased by his new VANDIT slam-dunk ‘Magnum’. Through the infectious, intense frequencies of W&W/Ummet Ozcan co-production ‘The Code’ and the vocal enigma of Nick The Kid & The Nameless Girl’s ‘Bright Light’, ‘VONYC Sessions’ revisits the spring. Delivering the mix its conclusion, Paul invokes the atmospheric aura of his own ‘Lost In Berlin’ and the self-propelled drum drama of Simon Patterson’s ‘The One’.  
 
“Compiling the annual VONYC Sessions album is one of the most demanding, yet fulfilling tasks I do in a year”, says van Dyk. “Selecting the best of the best from your most requested tracks in any 12 month period - especially one as alive with good music as 2013, is always a challenge. Disc 2 opens in inspired mash-up mode, fusing Ferry Corsten’s latest ‘Diss’ with the emotional sear of PvD & Plumb’s ‘I Don’t Deserve You’. ‘Open My Eyes’ makes it a van Dyk double and again opens the mix’s themes up wide. In quick succession the wistful trance of Protoculture’s ‘Talisman’, Heatbeat & Chris Schweizer’s tech–elec threat ‘Nasty’ and Estiva’s rapacious ‘Dino Drums’ all take their turn to hold sway. 

‘VONYC’s mercury continues to rise with the introduction of some pure form trance courtesy of Giuseppe Ottaviani’s ‘Earthbeat’ and Matt Davey’s much-spun spin on the classic ‘Greece ‘2000’. The Christian Burns/PvD team-up ‘We Are Tonight’ and the big-room bombast of ‘Super Dad’ (the latest from Richard Durand) keep both tempo & tone spiked. Its final minutes bring the climactic audio combustion of Shato & Paul Rockseek’s early summer club-crusher ‘Deer Friends’, Maarten De Jong’s fierce ‘Face The World’ and Cosmic Gate crowd-rousing/rocking ‘So Get Up’. Markus Schulz - GDJB World Tour: Ministry of Sound, London

June was very much the month of solo sets for me, starting at Ministry of Sound in London, two successive nights at Mandarine in Buenos Aires, and finally gracing the Guvernment in Toronto to play open to close for the very first time.

Toronto has always been a very special city for me, evidenced by its place in city series folklore through the 2009 compilation, as well as the Dakota track Koolhaus named after the large events room inside the complex. 

This month's Global DJ Broadcast World Tour brings you highlights of my 9 hour set from last Saturday, as the Guvernment housed fans from Toronto, Montreal, New York and beyond. We even had a marrage proposal on stage (check Perfect towards the end), and the passion of the fans who stayed right through to the end was very humbling.
