Threads Radio - July 2021 Part 1

Well it's not all from London I know, but like many a scene, London has often been a processing point for what's being generated elsewhere. In this case, very much courtesy of Frankfurt, Detroit, Rotterdam, New York and of course the UK itself. This is a fairly close recreation of the regular sets I played at VFM, Dead By Dawn, Eurobeat 2000, Institute Of Goa, Helter Skelter and various squat parties (Spiral Tribe, Bedlam) in and around London. Hard banging techno leading up to some of the decent first instances of gabba.  It's at a point where things were quickly splintering off from the highly successful UK Rave Hardcore sound of 92 and reconnecting with a harder updated version of what had previously been coming out of Detroit, Brooklyn, Belgium and Holland around 89/90/91. Looking back, though it seemed such a very separate sound from breakbeat hardcore, with the distance of time they were both very much shades of the same rave. Ah the memories….

Vortex Traks Podcast 20 by Jobot

Hailing from the Midwest music mecca of Minneapolis, Jobot has been weaving his precision brand of sonic layering for the last 20 odd years.  Drawing heavily on electro and mutant forms of acid, elements of techno, and early dancefloor references like italo, space disco and freestyle are all part of his machine-funk palette.  One hallmark is injecting 4/4 patterns with the groove of electro.  Heavy influences include Intergalactic FM and the westcoast sound of Holland, all things Drexciyan and UR, Midwest soundsystem culture purveyors such as Hush and Intellephunk, nearly annual trips to Detroit for DEMF / Movement festival, as well as tuning in to the echoes of proto-techno on radio hotmix shows as a child in Milwaukee, WI.  Productions are in the works, and it will be exciting to hear what the future holds for this genre-bending sonic traveler.

Selene has been transmitting techno, ambient and electro beats on the airwaves of intergalactic.fm since 2012 — first as the host of The Teahouse on IFM’s beloved ambient channel The Garden, and then on The Dream Machine as the host of Special Circumstances. Originally schooled in acid house at full moon raves by the Wicked Soundsystem in the San Francisco Bay Area, she moved to New York where she developed her love of techno thanks to events like the legendary New Music Seminar. Any additional free time was spent digging through crates at Temple Records in Soho and throughout various sidewalk sales and flea markets in the city. Records from this Vortex Traks podcast are from this era.

Just under a year after their last big impression on Rekids, Private Press are back with four more of their brilliant big room techno cuts. 

This Polish pair hail from Warsaw and are focused on producing high energy and dubbed out techno. Already this year they have released on the Ziema label and had a strong 2018 two EPs on the highly regarded Indigo Area. Their powerful sound is a perfect fit with the no frills Rekids label and these four tracks all do plenty of damage. 

Opener ‘Traces to Nowhere’ is an impossibly bristling track with razor sharp synth stabs and jostling drums that are redolent of the masterful Shed. Part old school, part a vision of the future, it is impeccably produced. 

‘Paper Clip’ is a haunting, high speed dub techno trip with eerie chords and sound design that keep you on edge, and ‘Wet Moon’ is a broken beat masterclass with sirens, tense breakdowns and icy hi hat ringlets that is archetypal club weaponry. 

Last but not least, the warm, atmospheric and unrelenting banger that is ‘The Struggle’ sweeps you up and carries you away on a classy techno vibe and rolling drums that you could listen to for days. 

This is a devastating EP of high impact, high quality techno.

Those out there which listen to electro must have surely bassed their asses off to this man: with classics like "Overdrive", "I Am Illektro" & "Internal Software". We have been struck by this man's talent for years now, listening through his collection the depth is also really evident: everything from dark & gloomy to full-on bass in your face!
Anyway, we are huge fans of this man and that is why he represents number 70 in our podcast series: a live mix of his tracks, some you will recognize and some are bound to be added into all of your electro lists later this year.

[AF029] JAMES SHINRA 'REVERIE EP' [2020]

Eris Drew is one of those artists who seemed to blow up over night, but who had actually been hard at work for decades. A long-time residency at Chicago's Smart Bar brought her to international attention, and her own Motherbeat parties at various places around Europe furthered that reputation. It is there that she manages to cook up pure, unadulterated dance floor love and euphoria with hi-energy selections and a unifying sense of oneness that is put together with her own so called “orchestration” mixing techniques. An inquisitive musician and innovative recording artist, she has also just put out her debut solo EP on Interdimensional Transmissions and runs T4T LUV NRG with partner Octo Octa. 

This week's mix is all of the above and more: a throbbing, impulsive and full bodied experience that serves up the most bumping house grooves but run through with the warm ambient glow of a post-rave comedown. The music feels at classic but also thoroughly contemporary: it will make you pump your fist in sheer joy, but also sends warm waves of euphoria through your body. This is the sound of the Motherbeat.

"In a recent interview for DJ Mag I talk about my connection to the song “Secrets of Mediation” by Dutch producers Alex Dijksterhuis (Jamez) & Gaston Steenkist (Dobre). At Chicago raves in 1994 and 1995, this track revealed to me that modern dance music contains archaic ritual elements such as trance-inducing resonances, penetrating sacred drums, and language transformed into glossolalia. My DJ mix for Dekmantel is inspired by my formative dance experiences and by the intense extended sets I play at psychedelic raves such as Motherbeat and No Way Back. The mix includes bass music, progressive, breaks, house, techno, and minimal, all of which I collage, drop and scratch to put us into a tunneling trance."

Archaic Podcast 304 - Dani Surco

Mesak hails from the city of Turku, considered to be the ground zero of modern Finnish electronic music. He was a key figure in the 90s electro scene as one half of the cult duo Mr Velcro Fastener and, over his two decade-long career, has been involved in some of the most fascinating nooks and crannies of the Finnish scene, from the ethno rap of Ya Tosiba to the twisted downbeat of the Harmönia label. Mesak is nowadays an integral artist within the catalogue of the Dutch label Klakson and has also contributed some excellent material to Vortex Traks, such as the Kirot EP. Mesak has mixed together a stylish selection of electro, old school techno and IDM for us.
