We kick spring off in Australia with a mix by Jordan Obarzanek, the Melbourne-based artist who makes music as Body Clock, OBA and runs the cassette label Happy Tapes. Their mix consists of tracks that have been helping the producer “during times of lockdown and life coming to a standstill”, touching on genres and styles including shoegaze, post-punk and minimalist electronic music.

Rather than transport — as his music as Body Clock and OBA often does so well — Jordan’s chosen tracks that “will hopefully help one feel more present in their own body/environment”. There’s a rough, grounded quality to their mix; it feels like the antithesis to the ethereal ambient we tend to gravitate towards during time of isolation, and I’m all the better for having heard it. It’s a huge pleasure to welcome Jordan on to the series. I’m such a big fan of their music — especially this gem on .jpeg Artefacts — and I had no idea I needed this mix until I pressed play. Hopefully you feel the same way about it.

“It seems unlikely that Where To Now Records would want to release something made in a shack on a river conservation property outside Melbourne Victoria. I've attempted to make the music that I hear in the dance clubs I dream about. I've never really been to a dance club.. but I'm trying to be sophisticated.”

Club music reimagined in an off grid Australian floodplain, of course this is something we’d want to release. Thankfully the accompanying music to the above sentence submitted by Timothy Brown aka TKB is every bit as intriguing as you might hope. ‘Dream Nightclub’ is a truly downbeat and dubbed journey through murky and swamped fourth world bass ambience, and longing, freeform minimal electronics.

TKB’s drum programming throughout is primitive, minimal, and unnervingly off kilter - shuffling its way through a world which waits… There’s a palpable sense of spirituality lurking low level below Timothy’s electronic works, where ambient scapes move from the deeply minimal, to the lush sublime, to the dense and agitated seamlessly, all underpinned with this submerged experimentalism - conversing with the still oddities which lurk the swamps and plains that consume Timothy’s day to day.

“The floodplain below my house is full at the moment. It's serene with the mountains behind, but as soon as you step outside the air is throbbing with the sound of frogs…”

Seeming to draw influence from the minimal pulse of Jan Jelinek, the fourth world ambience of Jon Hassel, and the open Dub experimentalism of Early On-U-Sound acts like The Missing Brazilians and African Head Charge, TKB has channeled these experimental strands into something truly dreamlike - a submerged trip which is shrouded in a dense fog…

K: Who exactly is executive lunch?

EL: Executive lunch is an afternoon special at Cafe Brasil in Culver City, a gentleman’s short-lived escape from atomization, a creature birthed in São Paulo and raised in the desert.

EL: This is your second pipipi mix. What has changed since your first?

K: Well first of all I guess I live in California now. Very grateful to you for luring me out to the crazy weirdness of Los Angeles. It’s been a strange year to move to a new city, but I feel at home having you as my rock and the handful of friends that have woven in and around our lives these past 12 months. Musically this one feels so different than my last pipipi - every song has some story or place associated with it that we shared together. Also, there’s a certain playfulness that you brought out in me which doesn’t come out as much solo.

K: If you could live inside of a fruit, which would it be and why?

EL: I would live inside of a pomegranate, for the texture

EL: What was your best interaction with a more-than-human life form this year?

K: When a black & white cat appeared at my back porch in LA and left a dead mouse on the door. We tried to leave water or food but he didn’t really stick around for it. Still not sure if he wanted anything in return or if he was just feeling particularly generous that night.

K: Take your favorite song from our mix, and describe the feeling you had when you first heard it

EL: I don’t know if it was the very first time I heard it, but the track with the most potent memory is no vale Na by Chico Blanco. Early in the lockdown, vibing down PCH with dear friends Sam & Chase en route to Topanga, where we all snuck into a park to watch the meteor shower from the wet grass
