What a year it’s been for Loadstar. Exceeding every possible expectation with their debut album ‘Future Perfect’ in May 2013, the duo won critical props and appreciation from every possible corner: from The Guardian to Mixmag, Hype to High Contrast, MTV to Radio 1… Love for Loadstar has been overwhelming. 

Naturally the love goes both ways. Here the Bristol duo provide an early Christmas reboot bundle, bringing 2013 to a fittingly heavy climax. Six remixes in total (two digital exclusives from a heavily subscribed RAM remix competition) the package features D&B reversion’s from some of the label’s most talented artists. 

First up is a remix from Loadstar themselves. Flipping the switch on their electro-bass burn-up ‘Losing You’, they ante up with pummelling drum dynamics and a bassline that screams bona fide murderation. True subversive heavyweightism. 

Up next, ‘Need You’. It began as a turbo-charged techno monster. Now, under the careful spell of Frankee, it’s a rush-coated, star-gazing roller built on a solid bed of bass textures. Twinkling and terrorising in equal measure, Frankee once again shows why he’s been rated as one of drum & bass’s brightest prospects. 

Those hungry for jugular-focused damage should jump on DC Breaks’ take on ‘Give It To Me’. Riddled with insane levels of energy and attitude, this is strictly peaktime business right here, confirming the duo’s current do-no-wrong status. 

Rene LaVice is also on chop-slapping form with his incendiary rub. Processing the demonic dubsteppy intentions of the original into a rocket-powered stepper, it has the sound (and impact) of someone setting fire to entire firework factory and running off at full speed. Genuine audio damage. 

Finally we have two digital exclusives. Swotting off the competition from hundreds of fellow hopefuls, both Ality and Abstr4ct are more than well-deserved winners. Ality adds oceanic sheet metal textures to the bass that’s neatly countered by tight weaves of dreamy synths while Abstr4ct takes the original’s distinctive paranoid riff and galvanises it with an iced out, steppy riddim and an array of system-blowing glitches. It’s so heavy Andy C included it on his recent ‘Nightlife 6’ mix. 

Six remixes, six reminders of Loadstar’s raw power. The perfect way to end a future perfect year…

Erb N Dub – Let Me Fly

Erb N Dub was last seen on Technique as part of the musical superhero team-up that goes by the name of Hashtag. Since then, he's been busy adding brand new chapters to his story. From his live project, Wicked City, through his four deck sets combining D&B with scratches and live drums, to his mammoth undertaking of developing his own dance music studio complex, it's clear he's a musician with ambition.

And that ambition is perfectly summed up by the motto “Let Me Fly”, this EP's title track. Skope shares production duties and smoking vocals are laced by Damien Soul. As Damien's blue-sky voice soars over reinforced-concrete beats and gritty mids and basses, this brings alive the sound of summer in the city. With both a full-fat Club Mix, and a Radio Mix to choose from, this is an anthem that proves D&B can go hard even when the sun's out.

Talking of going hard, next we step into “Moshpit”. Airy pads and chimes are quickly annihilated by uncompromising serrated-blade evolving synth strikes, building to a steel-toed dropkick as the beats and bass hit. This is grimey dancefloor material, for when its time to pull the ravers' backs off the wall.

“Parallax” offers a new perspective. Classic-sounding arpeggiated figures dance and intersect, leading to a drop in which pared-back percussion makes way for a head-nodding pizzicato-flavoured bassline. This is catchy, bouncy music with a pedigree that stretches back to eighties electro.

Finally, Erb N Dub gives us “Paper Chasing”. This one will have a nostalgic feel for those heads who remember raving to dark techiness in the late nineties and early noughties. Classic tropes are reignited for 2014 in an almost beatless eulogy to that style. This is a no-apology, lighters in the air piece for those that know.

With this EP, Erb N Dub has proven once more, as if it needed proving, that he's a consummate musician rather than simply an assembly-line beatmaker. Every track expertly delivers its own mood and atmosphere, each one different and each one powerful. So, it's time to join the Erb N Dub journey and see where his ambition can take us now.

From 'V Classic' to 'Planet V' and beyond, the V Recordings camp have been scene leaders in creating era-defining, zeitgeist-capturing compilations. And, following on from the retrospective 'Foundation' project, it's now time for another chapter in the story - 'Future'

Bryan Gee, widely known as one of the most influential selectors and A&R men in the business, has taken his time to compile and curate something that's more than just another album. This is Bryan's personal vision of what's to come, not only for the V brand, but for Drum & Bass music as a whole.
Never swayed by fashions, fads and sub-genre divisions, Bryan and Jumpin Jack Frost's family of labels have been a benchmark for quality from time immemorial. So, when they call this album 'Future', that comes with authority.

For V Recordings, the future is as much about building on what's come before as it is about brand new innovations. So, we see contemporary masters like Benny L, Voltage and L-Side pay homage to the classics with remixes of Roni Size, Ray Keith, Krust and Dillinja. Artificial Intelligence go back in on their anthem 'Uprising' to give it a cutting-edge reconfiguration, and Dr Meaker's 'Fighter' gets the S.P.Y treatment.

Then there are the 2020 visions of artists from across the spectrum of Drum & Bass music. The likes of Alibi, Paul T & Edward Oberon, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, DJ Marky & Dirtbag, Bladerunner, Zero T, Command Strange, Carlito & Addiction, Jonny L & Need for Mirrors deliver darkness and light, savagery and euphoria, musicality and hype in equal measure. And that's just scratching the surface.

The future that this album sets out before us is one where pigeon-holes and categories are unimportant. Certified legends rub shoulders with breakthrough artists. Heavyweight dancefloor bangers co-exist with soulfully melodic flavours. This music is unified, not by style or by marketability, but purely by the vibe. If that's what a V Recordings future looks like, we can relax. The scene is in safe hands.

Countering the chaotic events of 2020, Drumsound & Bassline Smith have done what they've always done and kept things moving. Having been selected to kick off the BBC Radio 1 drum 'n' bass show's Originators series, delivering a blistering volley of live streams and dropping bombs like 'Feeling Good', they had one more shot in the chamber to let off before the year was out.

'Feel It' opens with cinematic drama, a tinge of darkness setting the scene. Moving through the gears, DBS ramp the tension to maximum before dropping us into an explosive, bassline-driven heater that blends high-energy vibrancy with low-down griminess.

Already killing it in sets from the top dogs, this is another essential weapon from the studios of the Technique bosses. Heavyweight.
