Tiliboo Afrobeat is a Berliner band led by composer-vocalist-percussionist Omar Diop. Omar comes from a region in the south of Sénégal called Casamance, one of the heartlands of the west-african Mandinka cultural heritage. As a child, Omar assimilated rhythms and songs from many of the different cultural groups living in this region, including Mandinka, Wolof, and Jola. By the time he was 15 years old he was already a professional choreographer for popular dance groups in the Casamance, but this was only the beginning of his musical journey.

Omar came to Europe for the first time in the 1992 to teach percussion workshops, but quickly found work as a performer, playing with african and european jazz musicians on stages all over Europe. It was during this time that he conceived and developed his personal style of afrobeat music, mixing jazz and other international influences with the traditional rhythms and melodies from Casamance. Shortly after his arrival in Berlin in 1997, he founded Lion Express, the first version of the band that would become Tiliboo.  The band moves effortlessly from funk and afro-cuban salsa to deep Casamance trance rhythms, from Fela-Kuti-style afrobeat to traditional Mandinka griot repertoire.

Ao mesclar jazz, funk e percussão para conceber o ritmo que elevaria a música africana a um patamar contemporâneo e repleto de swing e críticas sociais positivas, o multi-instrumentista Fela Kuti ganhou o mundo com o enérgico e consistente ‘afrobeat’, por volta dos anos 60. As letras que passeiam entre o Yorubá (dialeto africano) e o inglês deram a luz a um novo conceito musical. Como precursor desse gênero musical, inspirou artistas em todo o mundo a se movimentar e expor seus ideais. Em Recife, a banda Abeokuta segue os preceitos musicais galgados pelo mestre Fela Kuti. O nome do grupo foi inspirado na cidade natal do músico africano: Abeokuta, na Nigéria.

A banda Abeokuta agrega a pegada ‘afrobeat’ à cultura popular encontrada nos ritmos pernambucanos. Ao adornar o afrobeat com a roupagem da música popular (maracatus, caboclinhos e afoxés provenientes das vivências musicais dos percussionistas), a banda aproxima os ouvintes com a identificação regional. Pode-se afirmar que o som da Abeokuta traduz uma nova experiência atrelada à familiaridade.

The story of Chicago Afrobeat Project begins a short 15 years ago. In 2002, a group of musicians sharing a common interest in West African rhythms met to jam in a West side artist loft on Chicago’s Lake Street. Quickly they realized that mixing afrobeat with Chicago house, indie rock, hiphop, or jazz opened new avenues for experimentation. Something clicked. The group had found a collective calling.

Fast-forward 15 years, hundreds of tour dates, and four studio releases, and the group has found ways of interpreting afrobeat through American urban sounds. Through it all, CAbP has been at the center of the emergence of the North American afrobeat scene. In its newest release, What Goes Up (September 29, 2017) the band features special guest and legendary innovative drummer Tony Allen, as well as many Chicago vocalists and MCs.

Allen, once exclaimed by Brian Eno as “perhaps the greatest drummer who ever lived,” plays kit on all 10 tracks, recording his signature beats behind the band and vocalists. This collaboration makes Chicago Afrobeat Project the first American band to produce a full-length studio record with Tony Allen.

Taking the vocal helm on the album are Akenya (Noname, Chance the Rapper), JC Brooks, Kiara Lanier, Legit (Chance the Rapper), Ugochi, Oranmiyan and Rico Sisney/Maggie Vagle (Sidewalk Chalk). The band’s new vocal-laden approach makes the songs of What Goes Up concise and intentional, and markedly different from CAbP’s prior recordings.

A staple of the American live music scene for years, the band’s live show now combines its historically instrumental style with the new vocal approach. Crowds feed off the spontaneity of the soloists and enthusiasm of the band.

Chicago Afrobeat Project has been a 100% independent artist since day one, with its new release What Goes Up following suit.
