As often extensively touring as he is on the quest for new sounds (‘the iron fence in front of the studio’, ‘the wooden door in the toilet’ among other samples), or building instruments from scratch with his pals (see Modular Organ System), Phillip Sollmann’s experimental zeal underscores a conceptual framework that reveals a collage of influences as broad as Basic Channel, Francis Bacon, Japan or the room he’s sitting in. This often amounts to smooth and genre-busting segues on Dial, Curle and Ostgut Ton. For Bassiani Podcast 120, the German neutoner challenges and surprises with an hour of osmotic and textural 4/4 techno, twilight arps and fidgety basslines. Efdemin at his very best.

This is a live recording, captured at Ego club in Düsseldorf, June 5 1999.  The music has been created with a self written step sequencer, the PX-18, controlling  a basic sample player and effects engine, all done in MaxMSP, running on a Powerbook G3. The step sequencer had some unique features, e.g. the ability to switch patterns independently in each track, which later became an important part of a certain music software.

I found the recording on a backup disk today. It has not been edited or mastered. During the first 20 minutes of the set, and before the 'encore' the Monolake CD 'Gobi' is playing in the background.

Peace Of Mind

Margarita Bassova (rita bass) is a sound artist, dj, vocalist and producer residing in Naarm (Melbourne). Her practice is inspired by her ever-evolving connection to cultural heritage, dissection of personal mental health, and exploring the interplay between music with other artistic artforms.

Rita’s creations vary in style, ranging from ambient electronica to bass-driven jungle, but are unified by the common thread of her own voice seeded within the compositions. Her works defy genre convention, with a particular affinity for the unlikely intersections between left-field pop, post-punk and drum and bass.

'Toska' is a dream-like reflection, an attempt to grasp onto old familial memories and suspend them within time. It explores feelings of physical and cultural distance from family, during a period where I’ve never felt further away.

The foundation of Toska is field recordings captured while visiting family in Russia in 2019. Frozen in subzero temperatures, we found ourselves skiing, ice-skating, falling over, laughing and screaming. I asked various family members to send me voice recordings to build upon the sound world, which I then heavily distorted and contrasted with my own vocal chops.

This sound work will be immediately relatable to many people across the globe, to many children of immigrants. It’s about longing for both familial connection and a sense of home that’s eluded us, never allowing us the chance to truly experience it as our own.

Here's a recording of my Live Set at Festival Forte made using modular synthesisers and hardware machines. It's a bit rough in places, but you can hear the music being created and destroyed as it's happening and I love that most about performing improvised live sets. So I wanted to share the recording with you.
