In 2021-2022, despite my newfound success in the electronic music scene, I ironically found myself at a creative low point. It was like I was cosplaying a distilled marketable version of myself. At some point, I stopped creating music for myself and instead started shaping my sound based on what I imagined others—fans, managers, friends, industry executives—wanted from me. It worked on paper and I still managed to write some music I love - but it was far more strenuous on my mental health than it needed to be. I convinced myself that anything I created that didn’t fit within the “Skybreak Coded” mold had to be ironic.

Through creating ironic art, I realized that only I can define what “Skybreak Coded” really means. It’s a thousand times repeated cliche, but by truly letting go of others perceptions of me and allowing my subconscious to take over, was my path back to creative nirvana. I figured it’d be kinda meta to write this song about that struggle to let go and become the most honest version of myself NOW. Toronto based Ana and Tyr seemed to resonate with this theme greatly. Since starting this tune, we’ve all become great friends, even performing this tune on stage together at the Rampage festival in Belgium.

In preparation to write this project, I deep dove into the roots of the genre to pay my respects to pioneers like Benga, Skream and Coki. The original Dubstep music that came out of Croydon, UK in the early 2000s just has a certain swagger and viscerality to it that I’d never explored in my music before. While it’s a little different sonically to the work these pioneers put down, CAN’T LET GO is my honest attempt to harness that swagger and fuse it with my signature colorful sound design. This garden can’t bloom when I’m with you.

STREET GARDEN is about the sea sick feeling after you break up with someone. When a relationship becomes so wilted that you just have to put it down, but you spend weeks if not months second guessing your decision, fantasizing about if you could have salvaged the good times if you ‘tried harder’. 

Of all the tracks from HALF BLOOD, this one means the most to me because it literally helped me grieve one of the most tumultuous times of my life. Finally releasing this one to the world feels surreal; I can only hope it means as much to someone else as it did to me at my darkest points last year.

While I showcased the more emotional side of this project with the first two singles, my goal with ‘STONE KOLD’ was to make the hardest banger I could. But to me, this track is arguably the most notedly ‘HALF BLOOD’; it’s got the energy of an American dubstep tune but the groove of a dutty garage tune you’d hear in a 250 cap club in Edinburgh. This one’s gonna be staying in my sets for a long time.

HALF BLOOD was never the album I expected to write. I was in the process of writing the album I thought others wanted from me, but nothing felt genuine. So this kinda started out as a sidequest - my attempt at taking established tropes of UK Bass music and spray painting them with my signature colorful sound design. But it became so much more. This record became a catalyst for rediscovering the roots of the genre. An ode to my heritage, both as a dual citizen of the US and UK and an electronic music fan at large. My bridge between the sounds and aesthetics of New York and London. Most importantly, a diary documenting the mistakes and growing pains of learning to become my most authentic self. I believe this to be my maturest body of work yet and I’m ecstatic to share this with the world.
