I don't think people should become locked in the idea that they cannot be happy. Happiness is something that finds you, not the other way around. This comes from a type of deep relaxation within life - stop trying to grasp and get a hold of this unpredictable world and let everything gently flow around you. Let go of the idea that the future must come exactly as you plan it, let it come with spontaneity and learn to appreciate this viscous reality you're flowing through, whether or not it is how you imagined it would be. But above all, gain the understanding that you yourself are the same process that shines the sun, grows the grass, moves rivers, and grows the hair on your head. From this realization, you'll realize why the golden rule is so golden. Treat others as you wish to be treated because in fact there is no distinction between you and other, between what you do and what happens to you. Its all you!
