Following gigs at Hoppetosse and an impressive podcast for Item, the French-German, Super Venus, caught our ear with her patient approach and under-the-radar selections.

Gaining a reputation for being able to play any time of night, there's a distinct personality to her records; a fusion of downtempo, breaks and techno rooted deeply in the raw sounds of the 90s.

Super Venus

DJ Masda is a seasoned selector renowned for his deep excursions in house and techno. Born and raised at the foot of Mount Fuji, his path has taken him out from the shadow of the sacred mountain, through Osaka, and placed him firmly in the nerve centre of European techno, Berlin. He made his first steps in the 90s, spinning expertly chosen vinyls and developing a keen ear for subtler details that quickly got him noticed. In the decades since, he’s been busy building a body of work that includes playing at some of the world’s most revered venues and running his very own label and club series Cabaret with So Inagawa. Under their imprint,  he’s primarily focused on giving a platform to friends, those with whom he shares a personal connection and whose music brings something fresh and fun to the label; this fraternity of musical souls are hard at work to bring the very best of the Cabaret sound to market. Here, Masda’s own signature mix is made manifest for Bassiani Podcast 199: a patiently crafted three-hour dive into eerie electro, bouncy house, even a peppering of Italo nostalgia, recorded live at Horoom’s season close last July. A perfect end to summer and a perfect start to a new year, an act that’ll be hard to follow.

Marie K's intriguing sound caught our attention from the very first listen. 

As a resident at Amsterdam's Breakfast Club and based in Rotterdam, her skills both behind the decks and in the studio have been nurtured over the years, defining a highly personal presence within dance music. Whether you catch Marie spinning records or playing live on her machines, the passion shines bright.

We first heard Marie playing live at Above Below festival - a fascinating sound that balances a sense of playfulness with cryptic and mystical atmospheres. Her DJ sets channel a similar path with influence from contemporary circles in the likes of Ukraine and Uruguay where a spirited sound is front and centre.

It's a true pleasure to host Karine & Shakolin this week. Resident's of legendary Ukrainian institute Closer the pairs consistently excellent output has been prolific of late, with mixes for Faciendo and Banana Box showcasing their knack for unearthing weird and wonderful gems. In DIM306, you'll hear a recording of a Ukrainian public radio broadcast from their youth before the podcast beautifully unfurls over nearly two hours.

Jane Fitz took the stage twice with a B2B set this at rural 2024, and she appeared on the final day with her musical partner Jade Seatle, who co-hosts the DIY party “Night Moves” in their home, London. The final day started out rainy, but ended up with sunny skies. This set was deeply connected with such a dramatic ending. Enjoy this euphoric collection of left-field tech house gems.
