The musicians: Ulrich Schnauss, born in Kiel in 1977, now residing in London, three solo albums released to date, Engineers keyboard player and an in-demand remixer (Mojave 3, Depeche Mode, Lunz/Roedelius, to name just a few). Mark Peters, born in Liverpool in 1975, bass player, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter in the British band Engineers, also three album releases to their name thus far.

The music: synthesizer, piano, guitar and drum computer, a reduced, yet bacchanal instrumental combination of ambient, electronica and shoegaze sounds.

Transporting the sound of shoegazer aesthetics into an electronic context – this is how Ulrich Schnauss once described his artistic goal. Influenced by bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Cocteau Twins and Chapterhouse on the one hand, yet wholly at ease with the electronica of bands like The Orb, Bionaut, Orbital, 808 State and unequivocally appreciative of veterans of the genre, Tangerine Dream or Manuel Göttsching for example. A brother in spirit of Robin Guthrie one might say, an apposite epithet for Schnauss.

His collaborative partner Mark Peters might also be considered his soul brother. Through his band, Engineers, he has similarly found success in following in the footsteps of his musical paragons. Engineers have released wonderful albums of dream pop, infused with the same spirit as the solo efforts of Schnauss. Peters and Schnauss have been friends for many years and over a year ago, Schnauss joined the ranks of Engineers.

For the past couple of years, they have been meeting up sporadically and making music. The fruit of these sessions served as the basis for the ten tracks on this joint album. More used to traditional songwriting, the working process was new to Peters. In the absence of conventional structures, the sole aim of creating an atmosphere, was an approach he was somewhat unfamiliar with, but one he found liberating. Working only at night was a decisive factor for Peters, lending the music a somnambulant quality – an effect that was intentional, striving to create something which cannot be ascribed to a particular musical category or zeitgeist. A challenge achieved with great success!

For Schnauss meanwhile, conjuring up an atmosphere through music is the most normal thing in the world: he creates music for those little escapes. Headphones on and slip away from reality. His highly praised debut album "Far Away Trains Passing By" from the year 2001 is a masterful demonstration of his art. He has remained true to his mode dâ€™emploi ever since: elaborate electronic layers of sound, elastic drum computer rhythms and drifting synthesizer textures are typical Schnauss hallmarks. On this latest album, Schnauss brings the piano more into play than usual, which enhances the overall impression splendidly.

"Underrated Silence" is a quiet album for the most part. Its multi-layered fabric reveals something new every time one listens to it, a wealth of fresh discoveries, new rhythms emerging from the sound cloud, hitherto unnoticed melodies illuminating the background. Schnauss and Peters have crafted music which is enchanting in the truest sense of the word, shimmering sounds, floating echoes, rhythmically reverberant chords which wrap themselves around the listener, lifting him into a state of suspension and carrying him gently away.

Opening track (A1) from "suonho in Brasil" Vol1. vinyl 12inch EP. here's another fine brasilian joint: "Cicade Vazia" got a ''sambossa'' (something beetwen bossanova and samba) treatment, maybe more a remix than a re-edit, but i left intact the original spirit of the track. 

The whole It's a fresh blend of Soul, Latin, Jazz, Samba and Bossanova ...Picked some hot brasilian grooves and retouched respectfully for those latin flavoured clubbier occasions. Reworks between edits an remixes.. Someone called that a "Jam-A Nova"! It Should make we dance and feel fine this summer 2012 and beyond....

"'What If' was the first track that we finished for Odeon. The song's basic idea -”what if this was not the case”- can serve as a layout for the whole album: what if noise was a song? What if the sound of the sea was a symphony? What if the ears could listen? The vocals of Belgian singer Sarah Carlier are an instrument like any other instrument on the track, as we always like to do. Every Tosca track is an architecture of sound, and the time of the clock turning into groove-time; Tosca-time. Music is the place where we like to be, where everything is possible, where anything can happen; what if the world was music?"

Having wowed tastemakers across the board with her debut album, “Barefoot In Your Kitchen”, in 2012 (Gilles Peterson made it his Album of the Week a year ago) saucy songstress and culinary linguist Bev Lee Harling returns with a one-off single covering one of her favourite songs of all time.

The Peggy Lee classic, “Why Don’t You Do Right?”, was recorded by many artists in the 1950’s and 60’s, including Della Reese, whose version provided the inspiration for this take, but seemed to have become a bit of a forgotten gem for contemporary recording artists, until now that is.

This limited edition 7-inch release features a pair of cracking mixes from two of Europe’s finest production outfits with an ear for a classic tune and a touch of jazz.

Italy’s Suonho has found fame recently with his tasteful edits, on-point remixes and his recent re-versions of Brazilian classics. Here he takes Bev’s interpretation to the dance floor with a bass heavy four-to-the-floor mix that will please jazz and house heads alike.

On the flip, our very own Colman Brothers are back, adding a little of their trademark ‘Cha Cha’ magic to Bev’s sassy vocals, and creating a mid-tempo shuffler that should please fans of both them and the lady herself!

The original vocal version is also available via an accompanying digital package, and should help stave off the hunger for more Bev Lee Harling material until her new album drops in early 2014.

Must Get There marks the debut for Majestique on Eskimo Recordings. The original is situated in that wide area we call “disco” and is backed with remixes by Martin Dubka and Drop Out Orchestra.

Bursting from the digital underground is Majestique, a Dutch production duo that grew up in the mid eighties. After they ran into each other, they discovered a shared passion for strange chords, running arpeggiators and dusty drum computers. A passion that is possibly programmed in their brains by influencers like Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis and Giorgio Moroder. With sudden access to unlimited analog machines, it felt like a higher power was trying to tell these guys it was time to create something timeless in a digital era where music is consumed so quickly.

Must Get There is taken from the upcoming Eskimo compilation that will be out after summer.
