Join us as we celebrate the adventurous side of 80’s dance music & the emergence of the B-side dub mix! 🧡​🧡🧡

​​Like all club music innovations, the DANCE DUB was born from the interplay between dancers & DJ’s. Adventurous dancers responded to stripped-down, rhythm-heavy compositions – so adventurous DJ’s started doing remixes that stripped away vocals from dance songs of the day, pushed rhythm front & center and added heavy echo & reverb for a trippy, mystic dance vibe.

​​Aural inspiration came from Jamaica, obviously (sometimes via London, as with TW Funkmasters’ massively influential Love Money, produced by British reggae personality Tony Williams. The extraordinarily dubby “Champagne Mix ” is included here).

The dub mixes typically appeared on the B-side of the main mix – for the first time providing the DJ totally different takes on a single song. Their rhythm-heavy minimalism and freedom from traditional song structures went on to influence all of dance music down the line (the blueprints for house & techno were just a few years away).

This mix is a selection of personal faves from this fascinating era.
