Lychee (@lycheefrut) & I had a lovely time joining May's Nowadays Nonstop with an extended back-to-back, and I'm glad we're able to revisit the moment.

We wanted this set to be as fun as possible while distinctly ourselves, and I love that you can hear a bit of both of us in the recording, dancing side-by-side in one of our favorite venues and building steadily toward a euphoria of our own.

Lychee at Nowadays Nonstop ⋆⁺₊⋆ March 2023, 1 - 4 am

Based in NYC, and with a background as a DJ, writer, and event organizer, Lychee's (@lycheefrut) underground energy is evident in every set they craft. With regular appearances at Basement, Nowadays, and Bossa Nova Civic Club, Lychee also runs Spontaneous Affinity, a monthly mix and interview series and occasional event platform, and the label Unimatrix Zero, as well as serving on the board for the Aslice Foundation.

Drawing inspiration from recent musical explorations at Nowadays in NYC in particular, Lychee's Patterns of Perception 116 showcases a return to their musical foundations in hypnotic, dubby, wormholey techno. Embracing a more focused, classic feel than many of their recent dancefloor explorations, this mix infuses a sense of narrative and evolution, effortlessly blending darkness and light, corporeality and sentimentality.

Lychee is the vibrant force behind Spontaneous Affinity, a monthly mix and interview series that delves into the transformative power of dancefloors. A fixture in New York's underground scene, Lychee's DJ sets blend technoid psychedelia with meaningful exploration, lighting up venues like Basement, Nowadays, and Bossa Nova Civic Club. Now based in the Bay Area, @sisgirlpgh has become a staple of the US queer underground via the close-knit and musically multifaceted Pittsburgh dance music community and through unforgettable sets at festivals like Gays Hate Techno and Honcho Campout. A co-founder of Pittsburgh's MESH, alongside ChadKid and newly minted resident Calin, and a resident of Kosmetik in San Francisco, their sets traverse many tempos within a dreamy, bassy, and effervescent palette. Their mix is a perfect backdrop as we lament the absence of those queer summer moments in the woods due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bouncing between melancholic reflection and joyful reminiscence.

"The tracks I put into this mix have been some I have been sitting on for a while and wanted to put together. When quarantine because of COVID started I wanted to create something with energy but still something on a tempo that wouldn’t necessarily be played on a dance floor.

The mix is recorded all around 100 BPM but still brings energy so it’s great for a mellow time or something different. The tracks are new plus some that I’ve had tucked away for a time like this. It’s one of my favorite things I’ve put together and I hope it brings people a lot of comfort and happiness during this time."

Our month with the co-founders of MESH continues with lifetime Pittsburgh resident @chadkid. With ChadKid, Sis Girl, and newly minted resident Calin, MESH has booked a broad range of up-and-coming queer underground talent to play to an open-minded, intimate dancefloor. Individually, ChadKid has played both queer party staples like Honcho's annual campout and Gays Hate Techno, and intimate local events like In Training (Cleveland/PGH), Kosmetik (San Francisco), and Only Friends (Boston). Their mix strikes a perfect balance between dancefloor nostalgia and home-listenability, and will brush across you like a fresh summer breeze wherever you take it in.

"For this mix I wanted to create something both uplifting and refreshing while keeping an easygoing palatable sound. Given the state of the world and the lack of nightlife in all of our lives, I  have found that listening to dance music aimed more for club use has not been my vibe lately. I still wanted the mix to be danceable though, so I ended up going with a breezy but still groovy sound in the tracks I pulled. I wanted this to feel like being at an outdoor dance floor when a refreshing gust of wind hits perfectly in time with the music."

Spontaneous Affinity #028: ChadKid

For Walking & Falling October's installment, we bring you a mix from Brooklyn-based DJ Lychee. This recording is a set they performed at Nowadays :)

A DJ, writer, and event organizer, Lychee (they/them) runs Spontaneous Affinity, a monthly mix and interview series, annual zine, and occasional event platform focused on how dancefloors have shaped artists. Most recently, they released a zine, "Behind the Party", focusing on the experience of workers in the dance music industry during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With a very slow build of industrial and ambient tones, Lychee weaves their way through tunes effortlessly. By the second half they pick up the pace, having us longing for the dance floor with bouncy techno grooves. It's a collage of sounds that we hope you all will dig!
