My adolescence replays against hammer-struck piano hymns, straight ties on Sundays, and sin so subtle and ingenious even God didn’t notice. Lazy afternoons sent smoke cascading down my chin like a waterfall, disseminating at my loosened collar and drowning my irreverent mind. 

Then one day, in the middle of the Arizona desert, I found myself in an oasis of color and sound. A congregation, huddled under prismatic blades of light, summoned me to join in worship.

Was it the drugs? No. I had abandoned my share at the draw of this celestial hive. I leaned in closely, closed my eyes, and devoured each note of the sermon. It fed me and I fueled it. From that moment, I was ordained.
