Tuna Pase & Yafit Reuveny

Tuna and Yafit met in Jerusalem at the end of 2011. As two women mainly interested on  sound, they soon discovered that their latest interests were on making songs. 

They recomposed their songs with the combination idea of personal emotions, experiences and Jewish texts to create a "New Jewish Songs" both with authentic elements and new sound colours. 

The lyrics consists secular matters such as personal experiences and emotions and  liturgical and holy texts. Sound wise you can hear mostly Eastern folklore tunes recomposed or completely new compositions that blend the new and the old. The project creates a new musical interpretation influenced by ethnic, experimental, electronic and electro-acustic music, next to traditional liturgical music.

This multi lingual project consists all the languages that were with them through their lifetime as: Hebrew, Turkish, English, Ladino and Persian.   

The new songs that were created in this project express a new Jewish identity. Identity that has many faces, which has context of different languages, genres, cultures, diasporas, traditions and atheism.

הן החלו להלחין יחד מחדש את שיריהן, בהם משולבים תכנים אישיים; רעיונות ורגשות לצד טקסטיים מן המקורות, יחד יצרו "שירה יהודית חדשה", המשולבים בה אלמנטים מסורתיים לצד צבעי צליל חדשים.
הלחנים, בחלקם מקוריים, השואבים השראה ממקורות "חילוניים" ובחלקם מנגינות שנאספו ממקורות עממים שונים בארצות המזרח, אשר קיבלו פרשנות מוסיקלית חדשה המושפעת ממסורות מוסיקליות ניסיוניות, אלקטרוניות ואלקטרו-אקוסטיות והן ליטורגיות. פרוייקט הינו מולטי-לנגוויסטי, ובו היוצרות משתמשות בשפות שליוו אותן במהלך חייהן: עברית, טורקית, אנגלית, לדינו ופרסית. 
השירים החדשים שנוצרו מבטאים זהות יהודית חדשה. זהות בעלת פנים רבות, תלויית הקשר של שפות שונות, ז'אנרים מוסיקלים, תרבויות, מסורות, אתאיזם וחילוניות לצד אמונה.





TUNA Pase flute, voice, electronics

Tuna Pase is a musician based in Istanbul. Her areas of interest are electro-acoustic composition, improvisation, ethnomusicology and sound design. She plays electronics, flute and sings. She draws her musical inspiration from Istanbul, Jerusalem, Eastern hemisphere, nature, poetry, photography, street art and daydreaming. She composes and performs electro-acoustic and electronic music and joins free improvised performances with other musicians. 
She is also a lecturer, teaching ethnomusicology and electronic music. She loves inspiring children through workshops on sound and music. She has played and attended concerts, festivals, projects and workshops in Europe (France, Germany, Austria, Italy) United States, Israel  and Turkey.

Yafit Reuveny, Voice, guitar, electronics

Yafit Reuveny is a  musician and sound artist based in Jerusalem. She graduated with honors from Musrara New Music School . She is a versatile vocalist and performer influenced by rock, heavy metal music, Eastern liturgical music and more. She established  "Jerusalem Sound Gallery" with a group of sound art activists in the summer of 2010. Yafit is also a lecturer on music, sound for media and musical matters in social studies.  She presented her works at the Tel-Aviv museum of art, hazira – the multi interdisciplinary arena, Performance art platform, Jerusalem Sound Gallery, International Audio–art festival Berlin and many more.

Notes on Voice Melody Compositions

THESE COMPOSITIONS WERE FEATURED AT THE CONTEMPORARY EXHIBIT AT THE JEWISH MSUIC BERLIN IN SURROUND SOUND. 

I admit, as a musician I have a bias towards sound. But when I think about Jewish culture, it seems to me that music and storytelling long played a critical role in transporting Jewish traditions. For one thing, visual culture encounters an ambivalence in Jewish teachings. Perhaps more telling, though, is the fact that Jews could squeeze their stories and voices into the most over-stuffed suitcase or bundle. And sling a violin or trumpet across a shoulder. After a concert at the Felix-Nussbaum-Haus, I noticed a saying painted on the wall: Trees have roots, Jews have feet. 

While the Jewish Museum Berlin has typically showcased objects, the exhibit on the music of Radical Jewish Culture explored how to use aural, not visual media to delve into Jewish identity. Well before Five Easy Pieces, I’d conducted interviews during my first European tour, when I used cassette tapes to record why other US musicians had crossed the Atlantic. On recent travels I’ve conversed with children all over the world for radio shows about music and young people. For this installation, however, I wanted to take the five oral histories as inspiration for musical compositions.

In Five Easy Pieces, I started with one-minute stories from five people living in Germany. I included myself. The time limit forced the speakers to recount only a few moments from the sweep of their lives as they considered how they saw themselves in Germany. We had all established “homes” in Germany, yet each voice refracted traces of different places visited or inhabited, age and gender, even the echo of a grandparent’s endearment or scolding. To me, the music of speaking, its staccato stutters and chaotic chortles, was as vibrant as the information conveyed.

I use music to throw images into the world, but it feels awkward to tell people what makes my work meaningful. Certainly my music is filtered through ideas or values I hold close; in our human response to life, I believe that we are intuitive – stronger emotionally than rationally. The spontaneous voice, even a spoken fragment, reveals to me the depths of an individual, a real-time sound history framed in feelings, whether acknowledged or suppressed. The stories we tell about ourselves are accompanied by the melody of who we are. 

After I listened to the stories, I transcribed the melody of each voice note for note, and assigned an instrument to compliment its timbre. In Five Easy Pieces, the instrument first plays in unison with the voice, then moves on – like someone leaving home. The voice is stripped of its words, but the story remains in the essence of the sound. 

Creating a piece of music through storytelling was a precious experiment. Now often relegated to a children’s activity, storytelling had been a vibrant part of Jewish culture up until the near destruction of European Jewry. In the postwar years, things like watching television displaced active storytelling – we’ve lost the storyteller reinventing the story for the moment and audience. I wanted to celebrate the music of the voice, to interweave the stories into collective musical portraits of experience and feeling.

For the Heimatkunde exhibition, the music of the voice belies the usual visual cues of identity. Assumptions about belonging and exclusion are often based on physical appearance, especially in this part of the world. In this piece, I wanted to probe our usual patterns of decision-making. After listening to Katharina, for example, her voice a mixture of Zwickau and Berlin, we discover that as an instrument she is bass clarinet. As we move through Five Easy Pieces, we see that Katharina is African-German. 
When I walk into a Berlin cafe, I can pass as German. Once I order my coffee, I may need to explain that I grew up outside of San Francisco, studied in Boston, never learned proper German. Back in California, my family teases me about the odd inflections warping my English. Sometimes I forget a word.

● There is no browsing of other member profiles. Your matchmaker selects profiles of potential matches and gives you access to select profiles for your review. In turn, your matchmaker will only show your profile and picture to potential matches. 
● Based on the other person’s profile and input from the matchmaker a single then “declines” or “accepts” a potential match through the system. All responses are kept confidential, only accessible to matchmakers and respective singles. Each member has 10 days to approve or decline the match. The system will block the same match from being suggested twice during that time. 
● When two members both agree to a match, <JCITY> forwards contact information so the singles can arrange a conversation and then plan a date. The man should contact the woman within three (3) days of receiving the phone number. 
● If desired, a member can update her/his status in the system to easily keep the matchmaker apprised with the progress of the relationship (i.e. “spoke on phone”, “went on first date”, “dating exclusively”, “engaged”). They can (and should) state “unavailable” when involved with someone else.

Aaron Holder breaks the mold with his debut album “Something Stronger.” This skillfully constructed album blurs the boundaries between Jewish and mainstream music by using elements of Folk, Pop, Country, Rock and hint of Reggae, laced with a deeply spiritual vibe. Aaron has already made a name for himself in the Jewish community with his inspiring songs and moving performances but this much anticipated album takes him to another level, crossing him over to the general public. He has already gained the respect from fans worldwide and played internationally with various seasoned musicians. In the process of making his album, Aaron graciously accepted the help from musical heavyweights such as 27 time gold and platinum musician Steve Gordon, Matt Kramer, the lead singer of Saigon Kick who’s album, “The Lizard” reached Top 10 on the Billboard charts, and produced by the owner of W4M Studios, Ovadiah Tank.



The lyrics in the album “Something Stronger” truly speak to the listener, and with Aaron’s unique soulful voice that ranges over three octaves, he keeps the listener captivated and yearning for more. Aaron has overcome challenges of his own after having learning disabilities and being bullied throughout his youth and set apart from his peers for being different. The positive outlook instilled in him by teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Shneerson, gave Aaron the strength to remain true to himself and use his uniqueness to create a masterpiece. “Something Stronger” is the canvas for Aaron’s own experiences and struggles. The lyrics paint a beautiful picture that can be interpreted in multiple ways, allowing the subjective ear to incorporate these messages into their own life’s challenges. Aaron Holder studied in Israel at Bar-Ilan University, where he was involved in the music
scene by managing local artists in recording studios. When he returned to Miami, he completed his Associates in Music Education, and is now completing his Bachelors in Music at Florida International University School of Music.

Moriah is an exciting new experience in musical exploration and celebration. Founded in 2009, their music is in fact a timeless blend of traditional Jewish and Eastern European tunes, and contemporary western and jazz influences, played with immense gusto by this band of virtuosos. A Moriah live performance is a spectacular affirmation of life and rhythm, and truly has to be seen to be believed.

Moriah truly deserve their reputation as Norfolk’s greatest Klezmer band, as they play such classic tunes as ‘Music for Jewish Usage’, ‘My Arrangement of Another Jewish Piece’, and of course ‘The Wine Song’ (originally performed by the incredible sensation ‘The Cat Empire’) with its ubiquitous drunken shenanigans. Cheers!

During break when everyone else was having fun outside, Dunnett and Ball were busy cooking up musical fusion and experimentation with a new genre: ‘Jewish techno’. Moriah’s ethos of cross-cultural appeal and driving dance rhythms was fundamentally influenced by this flowering of two young minds, starting out on a fresh new musical path.

The band Moriah was cemented through jam sessions during music lessons. These Hebrew-enthusiasts were not content to study the syllabus, and took every chance to play, expressing their joy through the medium of traditional (and not so traditional) Klezmer music. There was no dissuading them! Moriah pieces quickly found there way into exam work, and assessed performances.

At school they quickly found a fan base, and played at the seminal Green Man jazz club, and Jazz Nite 2010, where their live sound was able to develop. These great performers put on a real show, and it was impossible not to get up and dance. After a return to the Green Man and Jazz Nite 2011, which saw the inclusion of many more fan-faves as ‘Tatooine Bar Music’, a collaboration with the ever-excellent Vladimir Chapman, and the unfortunate destruction of a priceless tenor sax; they were able to play a prestigious open-air gig outside the Norwich Forum, to which a huge crowd turned up and left delighted and wowed by the awesome music.

Moriah features: The BBC young folk violinist of the year, Tom Moore; Norfolk young musician of the year and Royal College student Tom Isaac, on trombone; National Children’s Orchestra percussionist and black metal drummer Francis Ball; the virtuosic Eric Grunstein on piano; Matthew Dunnett, the living dog-beast, singing like an angel and playing bass guitar like a devil; David Hoare, a clarinetist of insane talent; and glorious band-leader, Cam Johnson, who does a mean turn on the trumpet.
