Elissa Barclay, a young singer songwriter in Guelph, quietly made her rounds through small local coffeehouses and open mic nights while earning her degree at the local University. A move to Toronto and flirtations with its thriving punk scene transformed Elissa’s initial folk inspired songwriting into a brash uncompromising style of Rock that blurs boundaries between grunge, folk and pop.

Growing up in the era of grunge, Elissa was inspired by the voices of the wounded and the rebellious and she began channeling the likes of Nirvana, Hole and PJ Harvey into her work. Somewhere along the way, people started nicknaming her “Warrior Grrrl”, a nod to one of her song titles as much as it is a reference to her performance style. Her music today is tense and dualistic at times; brash and vigorous, fragile and demur, seductive and repulsive, wounded and up-lifting. The artist she has become today is a performer who screams and growls into her microphone and tears furiously at her guitar all the while exhaling a feminine virtuality of perseverance and hope.Elissa is now preparing to release Glass and Wire, her first full-length album that’s been a long journey in the making. Recorded at Hawksley Workman Studio with Brad Kilpatrick (Gramercy Riffs, Hey Rosetta!) and mixed by Lorne Hounsell (Fucked Up, Cuff the Duke), Glass and Wire is a multifaceted collection of songs erupting with emotion in all its faces. Elissa speaks on behalf of the enslaved and entrapped, the wounded and forgotten, the discriminated and oppressed. She hopes that she can inspire support, healing and hope through the singing of their story.

The songs included on Glass and Wire have been honed over years of live performances with her band, consisting of Kilpatrick on drums and Shazia Khan on bass. Together, the trio has played to rapt audiences at some of Toronto’s most venerated music institutions: The Horseshoe Tavern, Cameron House, Tattoo and now historic venues like El Mocambo and The Reverb. Elissa has been featured on radio stations such as CIUT 89.5 FM and 103.9 PROUD FM promoting her upcoming album.
