Speaker: Capt James Fanell, US Navy (Ret.), Geneva Centre for Security Policy

Captain James E. Fanell retired from the U.S. Navy in January 2015 after a nearly 30 year career as a naval intelligence officer specialising in Indo-Asia Pacific security affairs. His most recent assignment was as the Director of Intelligence and Information Operations for the U.S. Pacific Fleet. He previously served as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence for the U.S. Seventh Fleet aboard the USS Blue Ridge, the Office of Naval Intelligence China Senior Intelligence Officer, and as the Senior Intelligence Officer for the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier strike group. He was a National Security Affairs Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University where he studied Chinese national political and security affairs. He has published in the Naval Intelligence Professionals NIP Quarterly, U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings and the Hoover Digest.

Measuring Russian Power' - an expert panel discussion that seeks to examine and understand various aspects of Russian power.
This event is hosted by the War Studies Departmental Research Group on Russian and Eurasian Security. 

1) Dr Natasha Kuhrt (chair) is lecturer in International Peace and Security at the Dept of War Studies, King’s College London. 
Dr Kuhrt began teaching on the M.A. International Peace and Security Programme at King's in the School of Law, on a part-time and occasional basis in 2002, before taking up a full-time position in the Dept of War Studies in 2009. Her main interests are Russian foreign policy – in particular Russia’s relations with Asia-Pacific;. Regionalism -regional security complexes; regionalisation and regionalism; nationalism and identity; International law, sovereignty and debates on intervention. She is co-convenor of the British International Studies Association Working Group on Russian and Eurasian Security, and also co-convenes the War Studies Departmental Research Group on Russian and Eurasian Security.

2) Professor Roy Allison: (speaker) Professor of Russian and Eurasian International Relations (School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, University of Oxford). Formerly Reader in International Relations at the London School of Economics, and Head of the Russia and Eurasia Programme at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) (1993-2005). Prof Allison has broad research interests in the international relations, foreign and security policies of Russia and Eurasia. 

3) Dr Richard Connolly, Associate Fellow, Chatham House, Russia and Eurasia programme. Senior Lecturer in Political Economy, University of Birmingham.  Co-Director of CREES, Centre for Russian, European and Eurasian Studies. Dr. Connolly's research and teaching on the political economy of Russia focuses on industrial development and structural transformation, economic policy, trade and investment, and Russia's role in the wider global economy. He is currently working on a book exploring the relationship between Russia's role in the global economy and its system of domestic political economy. 

4) Dr Tracey German (speaker) is senior lecturer in defence studies at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Dept of Defence Studies, King’s College London (joined 2004). Prior to this she lectured at RMA Sandhurst and the University of Aberdeen, and worked as a research manager for a business intelligence company, specialising in energy security. She is a graduate in Russian from the University of Edinburgh and was awarded a PhD on the topic of Russia's conflict with Chechnya. Her current research interests are the ongoing conflict in Chechnya, security in the Caucasus and Central Asia, and energy issues in the former Soviet states. 

5) Dr Andrew Monaghan is senior research fellow in the Russia and Eurasia Programme at Chatham House. He is also a visiting fellow at the Changing Character of War Programme at Pembroke College, Oxford. Additionally he is the founder and director of the Russia Research Network, an independent organization for the generation of information and expertise on Russian politics, security and economic issues based in London. 

6) Dr Victoria Hudson (speaker) is British Academy post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of War Studies, King’s College London (appointed January 2016). She completed her PhD, entitled ‘A Study of the Civilisational Aspect of Russian Soft Power in Contemporary Ukraine’ in 2013, at the University of Birmingham.Her current research project continues her interest in Russian soft power: ‘Russia’s Renewal of Cultural Influence and Attraction Abroad: A Comparative Study of Audience Receptivity to Russian Soft Power in Ukraine, Estonia, Kazakhstan and Armenia’.

Speaker(s): Dr Steffen Hertog, Dr Elisabeth Kendall, Azadeh Moaveni, Professor Peter Neumann | Exploring new data showing why someone joins ISIS. A discussion of the sources of extremism and how to make societies more resilient. Steffen Hertog is Associate Professor in Comparative Politics, LSE. His book about Saudi state-building, Princes, Brokers and Bureaucrats: Oil and State in Saudi Arabia was published in 2011. He is the co-author, with Diego Gambetta, of Engineers of Jihad: the Curious Connection between Violent Extremism and Education. Elisabeth Kendall (@Dr_E_Kendall) is Senior Research Fellow in Arabic & Islamic Studies, University of Oxford. She is the author or (co-) editor of several books, including ReClaiming Islamic Tradition, Twenty-First Century Jihad and Literature, Journalism and the Avant-Garde: Intersection in Egypt. She also conceived of and edits the Modern Middle Eastern Vocabularies series, which includes the titles Security Arabic, Intelligence Arabic and Media Arabic. Azadeh Moaveni(@AzadehMoaveni) is Senior Gender Analyst at the International Crisis Group. She is the author of Lipstick Jihad and other books, and has reported on women and ISIS for The New York Times. She was Middle East correspondent for a decade for Time magazine and the Los Angeles Times, and is lecturer in journalism at New York University, London. Her book-length work on gender and militancy, ISIS Brides, will be published next autumn. Peter Neumann (@PeterRNeumann) is Professor of Security Studies, War Studies Department and Director, International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation, King’s College London. Peter has authored or co-authored five books, including Old and New Terrorism, and The Strategy of Terrorism (with MLR Smith). He is the author of numerous peer-reviewed articles, dealing with different aspects of terrorism and radicalization, especially ‘homegrown’ radicalization in Western countries.  Shorter articles and opinion pieces have appeared in, among others, the New York Times, Der Spiegel, and the International Herald Tribune Jawad Iqbal is a Visiting Senior Fellow in the Institute of Global Affairs at LSE. He is a member of the Governing Council of Chatham House. Jawad has produced and edited a wide range of BBC News programmes. Since leaving the BBC, Jawad has become a contributor to The Times and Financial Times. This event is one of a series of public events linked to the Hard Truths exhibition which will be on display at LSE from 1-26 October.

In the second episode of our new podcast series called ‘experts’, we investigate new media technology affect open source intelligence gathering and we ask what the (ethical) limitations should be. Our expert on this is Dr Huw Dylan who is a senior lecturer in the Department of War Studies. Like all podcasts in this series, this episode is produced by Department of War Studies students who took the module ‘New Wars, New Media, New Journalism’. This module is convened by Dr Peter Busch who is also presenting this episode. The interview with Dr Dylan was recorded in March 2019.

These collaborations, held at the Inigo Rooms in July 2019, are part of the ‘VEM+’ project within the SSPP. Drawing on the emerging VEM Network (Visual, Embodied and Art-based Methodologies in the social sciences) at KCL, the VEM+ Collaborations is a cross-departmental project engaging artists and academics in an innovative dialogue about methodological practices in the arts and social sciences, moving beyond viewing culture as a site through which more standard social science research methods can be applied or as a means to illustrate social science research. Instead, these collaborations explore how visual, embodied and arts-based methodologies might transform research practices in social science , interrogating the potential of such methodologies to generate new, insightful and ultimately emancipatory knowledge for both the researcher and the researched, particularly in the study of sensitive issues.

Event: VEM+Exhibition: Art & Exclusions -- panel discussion

On 9 November 1989 the Berlin Wall was torn down by crowds from both East and West Germany, defining the end of an era not only for Germans but for the world.
