Adam Beyer’s new EP titled ‘Teach Me’ is an accomplished piece of work that highlights Beyer's year thus far. 'Teach Me' starts with some eerie chords before the distinctive vocal kick in and the track drops into a rumbling techno track. ‘Darlek’ uses rhythmic beeps and huge synth stab to create a funky rhythm before the atmospheric pads create a beautiful setting for this incredible techno track. ‘Stop Talking’ is a deeper offering from Beyer using weird and unusual noises to create and interesting piece of work that is helped along by the throbbing bass underlying in the track. ‘Spaceman’ uses a rhythmic vocal, percussion and sub bass to turn this track into a funky techno piece.

We have a very special guest for this episode. Man of the moment and one of the artists that sets the course for techno as we speak, Shifted, is on duty for episode 19. Noone knows exactly who is behind this mysterious monnniker, all we know he is no newcomer to the electronic arena. His debutalbum 'Crossed Paths' on Luke Slater's Mote Evolver label, is a stunning collection of tracks: rich in textures and with an almost physical ambiance. He made this podcast especially for his appearance at the first edition of BALANS at Melkweg on friday the 6th of july. Enjoy the darkness and make sure you don't miss him in Amsterdam!

As always, we had our Q&A with the mystery man:

01.What is you relationship with Balans?

No relationship to mention really, i'm just a fan of both the label, which is putting out consistently great music and of Darko as a producer.

02.What do you do to try and stay in balance? Any tips & secrets you would like to share with us night folks?

Try to eat well, not drink to much and enjoy life. Stress is the cause of so much ill health, I think if you have a healthy mind then your body follows.

03.About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?

I just wanted to do something more aimed at the Dancefloor. the intro and the outro also have some processed field recordings that i added on top to make it a little more interesting.

04.What gear did you use to make the Balans podcast?

Usually i'm playing vinyl, but i just recently moved to Berlin and as a result have no Technics here at the moment. I put this together in Ableton Live.

05.What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?

I have a collaboration with Edit Select that just came out on Semantica, I'm also working on a full EP for them. Aside from that theres remixes for Mike Parker, DJ Skirt & Planetary Assault Systems coming soon. And i'm working on a new Pacific Blue 12" and something for Avian.. No doubt there will be another EP for Mote Evolver this year as well.

BALANS019 - Shifted

The mix was recorded onto a 90min Maxwell UR90 Cassette using my Yamaha tape deck. As the mix was recorded so was the sound of the room via a Tascam digital recorder. These separate recordings have been 'spliced' together in Logic. No edits to the mix have been made and all the hiss & crackle has been left. No track list, keeping it just like we used to record mixes back in '95.

Back story and rough contextualisation: Motor City UK. Coventry, West Midlands. Summer 1987 (the year Coventry won the FA Cup) I worked in a 140 acre car plant during shut down as an industrial cleaner; floor painting, cleaning out automated spray tunnels,  dumping paint clogged grates in acid baths. It was brutal. Mainly ex-cons and young offenders! Fortunately, I had saved up the previous year and purchased a Sony Professional Walkman, and so my soundtrack to this harsh labor was Carcass' 'Reek Of Putrefaction', Napalm Deaths 'Scum', Swans 'Greed', (all of these bands I had already, seen live, including Carcass' infamous gory pathalogogy collage slide shows ) ... Derrick May's 'Nude Photo', Phuture Pfantasy Club's 'Slam' and 'Spank Spank', and various Omar Santana "Super Edits", were also on my cassette compilations. A year later, in 88 I picked up a white label of 808 States 'Newbuild', 'Flow Coma' was mind boggling. By 1990 Coventry had Britain's first all night dance venue, the Eclipse [1], where in the following years I would see Shades of Rhythm, Altern 8 and A Guy Called Gerald, all perform live alongside the heavy rotation of hardcore DJs. At the same time I was trawling the histories of Experimental Film and Video, Conceptual Art and starting to explore Digital Audio and Hypermedia on Apple computers at Coventry Universities Art Faculty. I also kept a keen eye on the writings of Nick Land and the 'other' philosophical activities at Warwick University. Not long before its closure, I was at the Eclipse the night, TVs, The Hitman & Her was broadcast from inside [2] prowdly wearing my 'FUCK', the Hafler Trio t-shirt, but it didnt make the final cut!  Jump to the mid 90s, London, and my favourite club, Lost [2], had exposed me to Robert Hood and Basic Channel, performing their breed of electronic music live, as well as the earlier, intenser, endurance, fast-cut DJ sets of Jeff Mills [4]. Around the same time at club Disobey, we had Panasonic, Merzbow, Gescom, Earth, John Oswald, Oval, MC Hellshit & DJ Carhouse, Claude Young, and Aphex Twins sandpaper DJ sets, not forgetting, Boyd Rice at the Hacienda. By the end of the 90s I had been to Japan and seen Hanatarashi, Masonna, Pain Jerk, Incapacitants, Fushitsusha. Combining and mixing up all these artists, something between and with a knowledge of Computer Music, Techno and Improvised Noise, is what I wanted. In 2009 the Inacpacitants released their 10x CD 'Box is Stupid' (Pica Disc), within the accompanying booklet, Incapacitants member Fumio Kosakai describes his hatered of DJs, branding them "dubious parasites", but adds that going to see Jeff Mills DJ in Tokyo in 1992, was liberating. "Watching Mills's DJ set I realised where the key to unlock my problems could be found. Not in the devices themselves, but rather in the arrangements of the sound, by controlling the frequenceies using filters and creating new balances between the various sound sources." For this experimantal podcast, I've used a ring modulator instead of a DJ mixer. Live 90s Detroit Techno DJ sets are the control input signal and Japanese Noise Live sets as the carrier signal. Intermodulation. No human input. The names have been withheld to protect the innocent. - Russell Haswell, September 2012.

Run! Run! Run! I’ve been running/jogging for the last half year now and it’s fantastic! Also after a crazy and exhausting weekend.. Run, and you feel much beter :)

About the podcast, can you tell us the story behind the mix?

I made a mix that represents my (darker) style. Their are also 2 tracks in de mix forthcoming on Darko’s label Wolfskuil Records in February called Exigent EP.

What do you have in store for us (gigs/releases) the coming months?

Besides my release on Wolfskuil records I’m playing along Oscar Mulero and Darko Esser @ de Melkweg the 22nd of February. I’m also doing a gig @ Ruigoord the 2nd of February and Together with Loy Bastiaens I do a gig as SHLTR @ ON an ON in the Westerunie the 8th of march with a sick line-up!
