Getting Directions

What started as a conversation about the universal language of music transformed into a focused 2 year journey, incorporating 50+ artists across multiple continents. Based in Portland, OR and touring internationally, flugelhorn & trumpet player Max Ribner has assembled an all-star cast of players who create the thematic storytelling entitled 1st Language.

This 11 song album features artists such as:

Bobby Sparks II - Keys (Roy Hargrove, Snarky Puppy)
Jarrod Lawson - Vocals, Keys
Mark Lettieri - Guitar (Snarky Puppy)
Saeeda Wright - Vocals (Prince)
Sharay Reed - Bass (Chaka Kahn, Kirk Franklin)

Starting from simple melodic mantras, 1st Language flows with the complexity brought by a full rhythm section, a 10 piece horn section, a 12 piece string section, an 8 person gospel choir and a 10 piece dance troupe from Ghana, Africa & Portland, OR. Max Ribner brings his unique voice and vision, drawing on the spontaneity of jazz, the arranging and orchestration of modern classical, and the reverence of universal spiritual music. After a year and a half of writing, arranging and tracking the album, the project caught the ear of Grammy winning mix engineer Ben Kane (D’angelo, PJ Morton, Emily King).

Completed in late 2020, amidst the din of COVID-19, national elections and an ongoing movement for equity and inclusion, 1st Language is a sonic calling together of our collective humanity.

"LoveLight" is a collection of songs and insights coming from the heart, reflecting the pulse of the planetary shift that we are currently experiencing on personal and collective levels. The album was produced by dutch musician Maneesh de Moor and mixed by Steve James at Rocking Horse Studios. The recordings involved an international collaboration of artists including Sudha, Amir Paiss, Avishai Barnatan, Praful, Bhakta, Ravi, Martin Brunsden, Rik Brewer and Luka. A song for the healing of the planetary waters......this Japanese mantra 'The Grand Invocation' is promoted by Masaru Emoto for World Peace . Such is its power ,it was used to successfully purify a polluted lake near Fukushima. I was so honoured that Masaru discovered and shared my song before he passed and was very happy about it .

This is the album that started Bobby Alu. Written and created solo with a few guest musicians. It placed in Triple Js Roots n All top ten albums of 2010 and recently peaked at #2 in the iTunes Australia World music charts. The single 'One to Wait' won a Qsong award and made the semifinals in the International Songwriting awards. The debut tour including performances at Island Vibe, Woodford Folk Fest and the prestigious Blues Fest and it all kicked off an exciting career.

2013 sees the next edition of the Bobby Alu catalogue. Take it Slow is due for release late 2013.
