Oh what lyrics!  Love this Mark. You strike so many all too familiar chords for me in this one!

Mark, the vocal, the lyrics, and the guitar backing (plus the chord indicators) combine in a gentle track with many resonances of thought and feeling here and there. It is marvelous how words and music can combine at times to add up to hint at something beyond the components, which is what is happening here.

Thanks for doing this song, Mark.  Really like it.   Reaching the end of the rope like the Crone Hindu Goddess of despair-- and bliss is close there.

Mark, when your stadium tour kicks off, put this last on the set list, would be my advice.  You'll spot me in the crowd, I'll be the only one still using a proper lighter.  This is a fabulous song - pure plaintive heart ripper-outer.

Civic "time keepers" are not unusual and some are quite famous; Big Ben comes to mind, Times Square of course.  Smaller towns may have a clocktower, or the local church may have chimes that ring at certain times of the day.  For St. Francis, Kansas, it was the civil defense siren.  It would sound three times a day; at 7:00 AM, 12:00 noon, and 6:00 PM, and take the day off on Sunday unless there was an emergency.  
Like the "Walkin' Boys", the St. Francis siren was integral to the character of the town and I felt it, too, needed a song;)  I decided to write the song as if the siren were telling its story.  And you're in luck, you even get to hear the actual siren and the dogs barking in chorus to help it sing its song.  Harvested from a forty year-old cassette tape, you'll hear a little hiss, but is quickly forgotten:)

At 7:00 AM I herald the morning,
At 12:00 O'clock noon, I'm the dinner bell,
At 6:00 PM it's time to close up and go home,
And the in-between quiet means that all is well.
