“The air was crisp and still that morning. All I could hear was the soft chirping of a Lonely Robin, its red breast aglow like a hearth’s warm flame, a resilient beacon of life amongst the season's tranquility.”

This track started life as a Christmas ambient track, but while I kept the instruments often associated with that time of year, the track took a less upbeat direction than I wanted.

I’m not one to fight the flow, and anyway, I like the outcome.

It’s a good one for bedtime. If you close your eyes, you might even feel the Christmas vibe as you drift out across a snowy winter landscape.

Lonely Robin

Like many of my tracks, the inspiration for this one came during my morning walk across the meadow.

Lost in thought as the sun warmed my face, I heard a loud fizzing and cracking sound coming from above.

It came from an old wooden power pylon cocooned in ivy, strands of which were draped in between the insulators, acting as a conduit for the thousands of volts that surged through the vines.

Nature was fighting back.

I noticed the bright yellow sign that said ‘Danger of Death’, and it suddenly dawned on me that the warning applies to all humanity, not just those in the vicinity of the power lines.

The danger of death is all around us. It dominates the news, and maybe it’s just me, but it feels like death is hiding around every corner these days.

Pandemics, war, sudden death, short illnesses, cancer, wildfires, bio-weapons, genocide, artificial intelligence, drone attacks, ballistic missiles, nuclear weapons, space junk, earthquakes, extreme weather, solar flares, planes crashing... the list grows with every refresh of your timeline.

It feels like we live in a world of heightened tension, yet I can’t help but wonder, or hope, that maybe it’s just my personal perspective.

This track is semi-ambient in nature, and plods along like most of humanity these days, oblivious to the horrors that are happening all over the world.

In between the familiar, almost mundane rhythm, you’ll find tension, fractures, and a frequent state of alarm. Or maybe you won’t. After all, it’s your perspective…

Danger of Death

Some records are steeped in mythology. Frank N Dank’s 48 Hours is just such a recording. Why so few samples from Dilla? Where’s the “original version”? There are nearly more questions about this album than cuts on the album. But according to Frank Nitt, “contrary to popular belief there was never an ‘original version’ of 48 Hours. We started recording songs to sample driven beats of Dilla‘s and we got 80% of the album done and Dilla decided to change the beats to all the songs.” That’s right, it was Dilla’s creative vision that stripped out the samples. Dilla’s production on this record was certainly a departure, with keyboard beats and live instrumentation (including a contribution by ?uestlove) predominating over samples yet the output is solid Dilla start to finish. As Frank reminds us, “This is the exact version of 48 Hours that we (Frank N Dank & Dilla) turned in to MCA and the way Dilla intended it to be!”
