Rework of my 2019 song "Return"

A song I originally wrote one Saturday night and released quickly, I didn't have the chops at the time to really capture the idea I wanted. This rework was an attempt to get it there. Enjoy!

Return (Rework)

The city was a place of steel and shadows, of neon and smoke. It was a place where the powerful ruled and the weak were lucky to survive. In this world, the Enforcer was a force to be reckoned with.


He was tall and muscular, a man of few words but many skills. He could move through the shadows like a ghost, and strike like a lightning bolt. He was a master of martial arts, knowledgeable in the ways of technology and weapons. He was a tool of those in power, a tool to enforce the law and protect the city from those who sought to tear it apart.


He lived a life of danger and violence, a life where one wrong move could mean his death. He had no family, no friends, and no one to turn to. He was a lonely figure on the streets, his only solace the night and the shadows.


But there was something else that kept him going, something that made him battle on even when the odds were against him. It was something he had never shared with anyone else, something he kept hidden deep inside his heart. It was a passion, a burning desire to make the city a better place.


He fought for justice, he fought for the people, and he fought for himself. He was the Enforcer, a figure of justice and a symbol of hope in the city of shadows.

Both me and Lukhash were owning an Amiga computer in our childhood . The Amiga were quite groundbreaking at its time with a superior audio chipset. A signature sound that "Alive" captures as well as modernizing it up a notch. Groundbreaking in the 90s still ment low bit resolution which creates the gritty low end feel.

I spent several days searching for the gas station I kept seeing in my head, today I found it. It looks abandoned with an ‘area closed’ sign nailed to the door. The pumps seem to be turned off, it’s clear there’s no one around. I pulled over to inspect the surrounding area, as soon as I stepped foot onto that area I knew i’d been there before. Feelings of confusion and helplessness sunk their way into my chest, this is when the visions started again. This time I saw things in much more detail as I closed my eyes and tried to focus on what my mind was trying to tell me. In that moment I remembered things, details that have shed new light on how the hell I ended up in this mess. I remembered at some point in my past standing at this gas station as I was approached from behind and hit hard on the back of my head. I fell to the ground, and with blurred vision I made out the silhouettes of four men shortly before they began attacking me. I remember blood dripping from my nose and mouth as I tried to mutter the word “stop” repeatedly, but they didn’t care, they didn’t show a single ounce of remorse. I recalled the fact that before I was hit to the ground I heard a man shout “Rico, That's the guy!”. Rico? Who the hell is Rico? Is he a criminal? A gang leader?
Soon after recalling these details I began seeing skewed images, symbols of something I have never seen before. Along side these symbols were a bunch of letters that as far as I can make out mean nothing significant yet. The letters are ‘KRQETAE’, I have drawn the symbols and have placed them in my journal. If you have time, take a look, I could be missing something.

Either way It’s time for me to head to the city in the distance. Maybe I can find out more about this Rico guy there. Whether he’s a big time criminal or a small time gang banger, chances are I won’t be the only person interested this guy.

In Glasgow, the summer typically lasts the best part of a week and if you're one of the many people unfortunate enough to have a day job, you’re going to see most of it through the office window. I used to work this really sh***y office job and whenever it became too much for me (Which was often the case) I used to look at photos of these perfect Miami beaches and attempt to project myself to that location. Almost like a mental vacation. These idyllic, pictures of purple skies that seemed to be drenched in an eternal amber twilight so thick it was palpable.

That's what I wanted to capture in this track. I wanted to take the listener on a brief mental vacation.

"I’m currently standing on the roadside, across the street from a house that I’m assuming used to be my home. I was hoping that on the way here I’d see things that would make me react in a similar way to when I first laid my eyes on the neon-lit silhouette of Solai, some familiarity. However, this place doesn’t feel familiar to me, at all. Regardless, this could be the first time that I get to meet someone who knew me before I lost my memory, it's a long shot but I’m hoping it’s Alice. I keep replaying the memory I have of her most nights as I struggle to sleep. I can’t forget the way I felt when I first remembered her, as a result of Clova discovering the hidden message embedded in the ring. It was bliss... "
