Basically, I'm a child of 90's hip-hop. I always have been and always will be. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of dope hip-hop on the market today (mainstream and underground), but to me, the eight-year period spanning from 1990 - 1998 was a hip-hop Renaissance that will probably never be duplicated. And DJ Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia (AKA Cool Bob Love, AKA DJ Cucumber Slice, AKA the ten thousand other nicknames this dude has) were probably two of the most influential people in the game at that time. I'm not gonna go into a long history regarding their show on WKCR, but from 1990 - 1998, during the hours of 1-5 AM every Thursday night / Friday morning, these two, for lack of a better term, "smashed the airwaves" of the New York metropolitan area. Their show was responsible for launching the careers of Nas, Mobb Deep, Big L, Jay-Z, Big Pun, Fat Joe, The Notorious B.I.G., A Tribe Called Quest, The Beatnuts, Black Moon, Redman, The Wu-Tang Clan, and the list goes on and on. Since I was too young during the show's heyday, I've had to feed my addiction for this show by scouring the internets for uploaded tapes from listeners from back in the day. What I did with this mix was try to showcase some of the joints that were spun on their show beginning in 1990 and ending in 1998. I compiled all the tracks to make it seem like you're listening to an actual taping of the show. All of these tracks were played on WKCR at least once (some more than others). I even threw in some of my favorite freestyles and exclusives, which were taken directly from old cassettes. I've got a ton of these old recordings, and it was really difficult to decide what to include/exclude, but hopefully, you'll get a sense of their legendary show and the evolution of classic hip-hop over a legendary eight-year period. Also, shout out to the good peoples at <a href="http://Philaflava.org" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Philaflava.org</a> for supplying me and the rest of the Stretch &amp; Bob fiends with hundreds of old tapes. One of my favorite MC's of all time is Mos Def. The man was so damn fluid on the mic and actually cared about the things he talked about. A true poet. Growing up, it was very important for me to see people who were actually intelligent while still retaining that cool factor. I think many times in the black community, you equate a person being extremely well-read as either snobby and elitist or a straight sell-out with no self-awareness. Mos was able to shatter those misconceptions beautifully. The man is an award-winning actor, true mc, poet, and producer. And he does all of them with skill and a nobility. In 1998 the divide within the rap game was at its most glaring. On one side of the stage stood the jiggy, “shiny suit era” mainstream rappers, with CD sales on their mind, expensive tastes, and a penchant for fly cars, clothes, money, cash and hoes. At the other end of the stage was the underground, “backpack”, independent scene, where rappers and crews still made time for college radio, performed small venue shows, and aimed more for putting out records on vinyl  than for selling CDs in stores. A strange state of affairs was that this was a year where the dichotomy of Hip Hop was at its furthest split. And then an album dropped and something happened. The deep chasm between the mainstream and the underground was filled, but not by much.

Yesterday marked the fourteenth anniversary of Black Star’s debut album. It was a higly anticipated release celebrated and critically acclaimed album immediately from the moment it dropped. It gave a celebrity face to the indy movement that was going on, and did it’s best to bridge the gaps between the polar-opposite movements that were co-existing inside of Hip Hop’s genre. Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, was the second full-length album on Rawkus Records and was the epicenter for the NYC underground movement.

Last week the good folks at Complex tackled another famous list by profiling 50 Best Rawkus Records Songs. Inspired by the idea honor Mos and Kweli’s epic release, and the label that birthed it, we figured it was our turn to pay respects as well. Sticking more to Rawkus released vinyls, which was the essence of the movement, we put together a list of 14 of the dopest B-Sides from Rawkus records.

The year was 1997. It was a typical beautiful Seattle spring day where rain would come down at a moments notice and then make way for the sun. It was freshman year of high school and I was coolin with my boy Ramone in his pop's old Cutlass and we just knew we were doing it big. (Ahh the good old days) Anyway, it was an aforementioned rainy day and we were in the beautiful bliss of riding with no destination and enjoying life & good hip-hop. Ramone was one of those kids who had the big-ass books of CD's at all times. The dude had every CD that would come out. Mainstream shit, underground shit, obscure shit (what up C-Bo & Celly Cel) whatever you wanted, son had it. Like taking pride in having any and EVERYTHING you could think of. He lived in my building and was older, so we would cruise Seattle for hours trying to pick up chicks and absorbing that good shit that was coming out in abundance in those great times (Goodie Mob! Camp Lo! Keith Murray!). Anyway, this day I grabbed one of those heavy ass CD books when it began to rain and we were Mobb Deep'd out (if that's even possible. Hell on Earth is still one of the greatest albums EVER) and I saw the this cover of some dudes huddled in a classic pose that is Illadeph Halflife. I remember seeing them in a short article in Vibe or something but didn't really pay attention. "This any good?" I asked. My man looked at it and said "Hell yeah. I STAYS with that hot shit." Skeptical, I just gave him a look. This was the same dude who was championing E-40 and the Oakland cats MAD early (no diss but they had to grow on me. LOL) He grabbed the CD and put it on. Man, to this day I haven't been that blown away and mad at myself for underestimating anyone. The sounds and grooves I heard. Incredible beats! All anchored by the incredible drumming of some cat named Questlove. Black Thought and Malik B. killing it on EVERY track. The perfect singing and harmonies that showed a deep knowledge and appreciation for soul music. Why had I never heard of these dudes??!!! I prided myself on being a hip-hop head. What the hell!!!! I've since been a life-long fan and was definitely proud of them when they gained much-deserved commercial success and rightfully won Grammy's. I was amused when people hopped on the NeoSoul train and were trying to act like they were down all along. I cheered when Quest got his just due as a musical genius and a cultural icon. I loved the Soulquarian collective that spawned the incredible "Voodoo" and "Like Water for Chocolate" masterpieces. I championed the acts that they embraced and helped (Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Little Brother, JazzyFatnastees, Bilal, so many greats!) and I can truly say that they are one of the greatest groups in history. Not just Hip-Hop. In ALL music. And I still remember that day with much joy as the day I was introduced to The Roots. Enjoy. Buy all their albums. Y'all know how I get down. Tribute to The Roots

This month marks the 25th anniversary of Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's second (and final) full-length LP, 'The Main Ingredient.' Following in the footsteps of 1992's 'Mecca and the Soul Brother,' the album comprises tracks built from densely layered samples, frequently previously unsampled jazz fusion cuts mixed with crisp drums and short vocal snippets plundered from well-known '80s/'90s hip-hop tracks. Use of a number of go-to tracks defines the sound of the album and the presence of vocal samples from Biz Markie and Big Daddy Kane in particular is a key ingredient in the album's sonic palette. In celebration of the album's 25th year, we've partnered once again with WhoSampled to present this mixtape of album tracks, alt versions, interview snippets, and of course original sample material, mixed by Chris Read.
