In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #5 in this year by year series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1991, a year remembered fondly for its many anthems – Tribe’s ‘Scenario’, Nice and Smooth’s ‘Hip Hop Junkies’, Showbiz and AG’s ‘Party Groove’ and many other underground club smashes saw their release during the year. 1991 was also a solid year for long players with stand out debut LPs from Black Sheep and Main Source amongst others. Debut LPs from Del the Funkee Homosapien and Cypress Hill both broke preconceptions about the West Coast sound in very different ways. Cover art pays homage to LA based independent Delicious Vinyl whose early 90s roster included the Pharcyde, Def Jef and Masta Ace among others.

#HIPHOP50: Classic Material Edition #5 (1991) mixed by Chris Read

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This fourth bonus mix follows last month's Hip House round up with a collection of Hip Hop tracks influenced by the New Jack Swing sound of the late 80s and early 90s. Featured tracks include production from some of the producers central to the New Jack Swing sound – Teddy Riley, Eddie F, and some from those better known for a more classic Hip Hop style who also dabbled in the sound during the era – Marley Marl, Pete Rock and many more. The cover artwork references the classic Uptown Records label sleeve.

Alongside the Hip Hop series, this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this sixth volume pieces together popular Hip Hop tunes from the year of 1991, utilising only the Funk, Soul, Rock, Jazz and Disco tracks from which they were originally constructed - over 100 breaks in the mix! #HIPHOP50: Classic Material The Breaks #6 (1991) mixed by Chris Read

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #6 in this year by year series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1992, a year most notable for shifts in production techniques and styles and, perhaps more importantly, sampling trends. Abandoning over-saturated funk standards in favour of obscure jazz samples, producers such Showbiz, Diamond D, Q-Tip and many others besides laid the foundations for the laid back jazz led sound that characterised countless East Coast classics of the early to mid 90s. On the West Coast, Dr Dre’s seminal Chronic LP also broke new ground in terms of production style with a polished, classicly LA sonic template that formed the blueprint for the G Funk sound which ruled supreme throughout the early 90s. Artwork pays tribute to iconic logo of Nervous Records Hip Hop sub-label 'Wreck Records'.

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This fifth bonus mix focuses on another sub-genre popularised in the 90s, the fusion of Hip Hop and Dancehall vocals. The mix features artists who hung their hat on that particular fusion (Mad Lion, Bobby Konders), Hip Hop styled remixes of Dancehall cuts (see DJ Muggs’ remix of Danny Red), Dancehall artists who vocalled Hip Hop beats (Mega Banton, Lady Apache) plus some pairings of Dancehall Acapellas with Hip Hop production from the era exclusive to this mix. The cover art references Nervous Records' 'Weeded' sub-label responsible for a number of key releases in this particular lane.

#HIPHOP50: Classic Material The Breaks #7 (1992) mixed by Chris Read

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #7 in this year by year series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1993, a year which many consider the pinnacle of Hip Hop's second golden era. Sampling and production techniques honed during the early 90s had reached a natural maturity by 1993 with key East Coast producers such as Pete Rock and the Beatnuts establishing their own trademark sounds. The East Coast also ushered in a new harder edged sound with Wu Tang and Onyx both delivering gritty debuts. On the West Coast, the ‘G Funk’ sound which found its feet the pervious year delivered one of its most accomplished albums in the form of Snoop’s seminal LP, Doggy Style. 1993 was also a great year for emerging undergound acts carving out their own sound, Souls of Mischief being a notable example. Cover artwork pays tribute to the iconic Elektra Records logo.

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This sixth bonus mix focuses on another sub-genre popularised in the 90s which is not entirely easy to define. Loops of popular Hip Hop records arranged into club-friendly instrumentals, in their day these tracks were mostly referred to simply as ‘Breakbeats'. They were Club records first and foremost so ‘Hip Hop Club Breaks’ is maybe a more accurate description. Armand Van Helden’s ‘AV8’ is the label most commonly associated with the sound, although Nervous Records & its ‘Strapped’ sub label were perhaps equally active. A few other smaller labels like Slammin’ and Kingsize also played their part. A lot of DJs principally associated with House music or who produced both House and Hip Hop were responsible for many of these records, often under aliases – Armand Van Helden of course, but also Todd Terry, Kenny Dope, DJ Spinna and others. Many other names in the scene were known for making this style of Hip Hop almost exclusively – Crooklyn Clan, Davey Dex, Bobby J to name a few. Artwork here pays tribute to Armand Van Helden's AV8 Records.

In celebration of the genre's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Alongside the Hip Hop series, this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this eigth volume pieces together popular Hip Hop tunes from the year of 1993, utilising only the Funk, Soul, Rock, Jazz and Disco tracks from which they were originally constructed - over 125 breaks in the mix! Artwork pays homage to Paul Winley's iconic 'Super Disco Brakes' compilation series.
