It’s understandable, the forgetting. For every bit, byte, and audio\video second of entertainment, infotainment, and information, there is one less moment for reflection, to think and know that ideas we take for granted - respect, equality, education, truth, justice, science, rationality - are not, in fact, granted to us. They were fought for. Tooth and nail, water hose and tear gas canister, blood, sweat and tears. 

The power of the ruling class relishes its spoils, those it has always had and will continue to have, and it does not give them up readily. And yet, the power of the masses, the average citizens of Earth, has risen and fallen along with their courage to stand up and weather the storm of powerful brutality. 

Civil rights are now a catchphrase, a code for remembrance, but before we slide back into a bygone era of greed, repression and division, we must remember those that came before us. Those who granted us the freedoms we now must fight for, in the streets and in our minds. Those who performed the passions of millions of young, yearning, open minds to connect and open up to the world around them.

Remember Fela, Imprisoned for the heinous act of musical creation, a raised fist against the warring remains of British colonial rule. 

Remember Dr. Martin Luther King. A symbol of peaceful protest for not just his entire race, but for oppressed people the world over. 

Remember Jimi. Standing proud and hazy on that August morning, closing Woodstock to a few hundred thousand heavily experienced dancing humans. One iconic guitar speaking to his generation and a few beyond to the future, radical expression in an age of civil defiance. 

Remember these and remember countless others, the Rosa Parks’ and and Gloria Steinems and Noam Chomskys who have thought and written and sung and marched for the freedom and happiness of themselves, their friends, their families.

Welcome to Grindhaüs; or, How to Start a Revolution

Wax Theory’s musical inner workings run deep. For him, music is not an obsession - it’s an inevitability. His all-consuming passion for shared sonic experience has translated into event productions, underground parties, and festival bookings across Canada and overseas since he bought his first turntables in 2010. He lies at the musical intersection of house, disco, funk, soul, R&B, bass, folk and rock, and the sounds in his repertoire are universally heartfelt, warm, and filled with positive thoughtful intention. 

Electro Swing parties in small Calgary venues in 2012 blossomed into a Shambhala Music Festival booking in 2013 with Electro Swing Club Canada. From that rocket blast into the dance music scene, Wax Theory collaborated with producers, dancers, performers, painters and players around Western Canada to create multi-disciplinary art extravaganzas at Astral Harvest, Spiritbar in Nelson, BC, and Freezer Burn, and at festivals, pop ups and halls scattered around Alberta and B.C.

Aside from producing parties and performances with his multi-talented wife DJ Work Party, Wax Theory co-led a seven year DJ residency at Habitat Living Sound from 2014 to 2020. Recently, he’s played DJ sets at Vortex Tisno for Defected Croatia, Shuffle Club YYC, Sub Rosa, Station on Jasper (YEG), HiFi Club, Disco in the Park 2022, Cafe Koi, the #1 Legion, Chvrch of John and the Grindstone Theatre in Edmonton, and basements, community halls, fundraisers and pop up parties from Stephen Ave to corporate gigs to secret warehouses.

Now, Wax Theory curates and plays at Soul Candy, a residency at Rated Ultra Lounge in Calgary dedicated to the best in house, disco, bass and funk music, with an eye and ear for flamboyant, colourful, warm and vibrant music and art.
