I wrote this song three and a half years ago, in the gap months between finishing national service and starting university, at a not-so-good period of my life. I was trying to remind myself to stay hopeful, that the lights come and go, but that they would eventually come back. I wanted to add a third verse to complete it, to return the song to hope after the downer of the second chorus, but I just couldn't. I couldn't find the words or the mood to finish the song. So I left it as such, and told myself that, when life brings me to a point where I can find the third verse, I would come back and complete it.

I revisited the song several times in the years since, but couldn't find anything within me to complete it. It was frustrating. I'm happy to say though that the past year has brought me a lot more peace, and gradually, bit by bit, I came to accept the song as it is. It was true and complete in its two-verse form at the point of writing, and there is nothing I need to add to it to change it. And perhaps that's life: learning to accept different phases of life as they come and go, and not feeling a need to jump to the next one, or control that which we cannot control. And to learn to embrace each moment, even if it is difficult to find something to look forward to, or a third verse to write.

This song is dedicated to everyone finding their way in life right now: I hope the lights will find you soon enough, but till then, maybe there is something in the darkness to appreciate. (:

(Note: The photograph used as artwork for this song was taken atop the bridge connecting the two sides of Tromsø, Norway, which sees almost no daylight in the middle of winter. I asked a couple of people from the region if they liked the weather there--I for one could not imagine living in such conditions. To my surprise, they replied in the affirmative, grinning broadly. "During summer, the days are awesome.")
