NGC 55 is a barred spiral galaxy of type SBm, located in the constellation Sculptor. It is a relatively nearby galaxy, situated about 6.5 million light-years from our Milky Way. NGC 55 is often referred to as the "Whale Galaxy" and is one of the brightest galaxies in the Sculptor Group.
