Third Coast Kings 5-21-2014

The WCBN Local Music Show happens every Wednesday from 9-11pm on 88.3 FM in Ann Arbor, Michigan and at wcbn.org online.  Almost every week we host local musicians from a variety of genres for live in-studio performances.  Most of these performances from 2003-present are available here for your listening pleasure.

Sean moved to Detroit in ‘93, with a band known as Fathers of the Id, a hard rock/psychedelic band that went on to win 1994’s Detroit Music Award’s Best Funk Band.  The Detroit News’ Music writer, Wendy Case, called Sean, “more fun that a busload of 10 year-olds on their way to Cedar Point.”  After the Fathers went on hiatus, Sean moved to Ann Arbor, where he lent his services to the Detroit soul band, The Elevations, which raised a ruckus in Detroit, causing critics to rave about Sean’s “feverishly gut-wrenching vocal delivery.” “Seeing him sweat through his suit, take hold of the microphone and belt through soul tunes.” The Elevations were added to Metro Times’ Detroit Music Family Tree after only two years in the public eye.
Nowadays, Sean’s music is still searching for new sounds as a tool for extending what Soulful music can be.  To this end, Sean is singing with a band around Michigan with a 8-piece deep funk band called The Third Coast Kings. Where Sean’s entertaining style works with the band’s already present groove. One writer described, “The Third Coast Kings and the singer fed off each other to devastating effect, and the energy in the venue, already high, notched higher. Ike barked out lyrics with a confidence and purpose that would've made James Brown proud, all the while sliding around the stage, shaking a tail feather, and inciting the dancers into a greater frenzy.” 
Branching out from U.S. based soul, Sean also adds deeper flavors, mixing 70’s Brazilian Samba-funk and Samba-rock into the gumbo. Blending Brazilian funk/pop hero, Jorge Ben Jor, with Sam Cooke, Sun Ra, and Jimi Hendrix, Sean creates a very nice dish.  “I like playing with a band that can translate all different types of things.  An alchemy of different musics that will still say ‘Soul’ on the label. It will still have that sweet soul vibe, whether it’s funk, Brazilian, or rock, because,” he continues, “when times get tough, Soul music wins.”  And that type of win is always a win-win.
