"Gentleforce Presents: Australian Ambience for The Observatory"

Gentleforce is an  ambient solo project by Sydney-based sound artist, Eli Murray. Even if you haven't seen the name before, there’s a good chance you’ve heard his music. His sounds have been included in installation works at festivals such as Underbelly Arts and Vivid Sydney, featured in the Australian Ballet’s advertising program, shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize award, and found their way into documentaries and film on the ABC and SBS networks.

Murray has always based his work in the worlds of field recordings and meditational synth music, with a focus on psychogeography and its interaction between the natural environment, spatial histories, and the emotional impact these have on the individual. Fusing these concepts with his love of traditional ceremonial music from around the world, and the influence of his many
years of DJ’ing at clubs, has created a unique melting pot of sounds to submerge the listener within. Meditation is at the core of everything Murray does, and his music has always aspired to transcendence through deep listening. Guiding the listener to healing and positive sound environments.

"When Jay asked me to contribute to The Observatory's mix series, I took it as an opportunity to focus solely on Australian artists creating music and field recordings that are built around this amazing landscape I call home. It's overwhelming if you look at the wealth of talented musicians and labels in Australia that create ambient style music, so I decided to create a mix based around artists that I know personally or have directly influenced my own music productions. Even hyperfocusing on this group of musicians was still challenging, as there was a lot of great music to choose from. But, I feel the outcome is sonically coherent and also quintessentially sounding of the bush and coastline meeting together. The tracks mixed are mostly long-form pieces, so I let each song breathe and melt slowly into one another with a meditative mindset. A big thank you to Jay at The Observatory for giving me this opportunity, Marcus at Holosuite Mastering for the magic audio sprinkles, and all artists featured that have inspired me along my own creative journey. Acclaimed author Neil Gaiman performs a memorable dramatic reading from NYPL’s own rare copy of "A Christmas Carol," which includes edits and prompts Charles Dickens wrote in his own hand for his unique public readings 150 years ago. Dressed in full costume and joined by writer and BBC researcher Molly Oldfield, Gaiman performs the classic tale as its great author intended.

Thanks for all the comments everyone! If I was wrong on the date, I apologize, I honestly didn't think I was still going to the Limelight after 1993 and thats why I dated it earlier. 

Yes the sound quality isn't the best but like I said I snuck in a Sony portable DAT recorder and recorded it straight from the crowd from the floor level right below the DJ booth. 
While I was outside on line, the security guard frisked me at the door and was like "what the hell is that? You can't bring that in here!" I told him its just a walkman and he let me go in with it. I'm lucky to even have this bad recording to be honest.
While we were waiting for his set, Richard James walked by me and this kid I was with and the kid stopped him and asked "hey my friend snuck in a DAT recorder, can we record right from your mixer??? RDJ just laughed in his face, said NO! and walked away. Haha.

Back in the early 1990s when techno was just starting to explode in NYC, I snuck a portable DAT recorder into the Limelight nightclub when Richard James, The Aphex Twin was DJing a very rare live set. I recorded his entire 1hr set from the crowd and then put the DAT away for 25+ years. The other day with the help of my friend Tony Rodriquez (LUV4WAX)and his DAT machine, we finally made a digital copy of the set and finally uploaded it for all to hear. As far as I can remember, RDJ did only 2 live performances (one performance blew out the power to the entire club and left the place pitch black and silent for a few minutes!) and 1 DJ set at the Limelight during that time. I have never heard a live set from RDJ from the Limelight so this might be the only recording of this set (please correct me if I'm wrong, thanks!) The recording is loud and noisy just like 90s techno but I think its clear enough to enjoy. If you can ID any tracks to create a track list, feel free to post it in the comments!

Aphex Twin Live at Limelight NYC MID 1990s LOFIDELIC RECORDS

Coming in at just over two hours long (two hours and nine minutes to be precise) is the first part of the first "The Emporium Project" ... a collection of collaborations that span multiple genres but hold true to their central, uniting force ... Cousin Silas. 

On 1.1, Cousin Silas & his Friends bring to the table: longform ambient and unique sounds inspired by ska ... atmospheric soundscapes that use field recordings and tracks that feel like they were recorded in an out-of-the-way Blues club ... dark ambient eeriness and more percussive sounds. It is, without doubt, a varied set, one that will appeal to the curious and the adventurous in equal measure.

As mentioned above, this is the first part of the first Emporium Project ... you can expect four more parts in the coming days and weeks ... roughly ten hours in total and plenty to keep you occupied in the dark days of winter (in the Northern Hemisphere).

As before, we will use this series as an opportunity to give a little back to our wider community. All monies raised from the sale of this album will be donated to Hospice UK. I am both fortunate and grateful to work for an employer who actively matches all donations made ... so every purchase will be doubled for the benefit of a very worthy cause.

I really do hope you will enjoy this album as much as I have.
