Feelings in the Night

When Nadeem from Sub-Label Records asked me to provide him with a progressive house mix for a radio show I was concerned that I don't have a collection of contemporary progressive house. What I do have however is a substantial amount of music from the early 1990's - when that genre really blossomed. The genesis of that progressive sound was a club night called 'Renaissance' that was started by Geoff Oakes in 1992 at a club called Venue 44 in Mansfield, a small town in Nottinhamshire. In 1993 the venue was changed to an old printworks in nearby Derby. The club presented a darker, deeper, more melodic sound than the more 'rave' oriented music policies of other clubs across the UK. It was typically seamlessly and harmonically mixed (which a young DJ called Sasha had been tutored in by Jon Da Silva at the Hacienda). The decor, artwork and branding was all carefully thought out - with chandeliers on the ceiling and dark velvet drapes and renaissance artwork projected onto the walls. From an interview with Oakes:
"The visual identity was a deliberate move away from the ‘rave’ influenced artwork of most clubs at the time. The distressed renaissance imagery really stood out and marked the night as something different... I wanted a mix of cool and full-on clubbers, which happened and worked perfectly. I was lucky to catch on very early to that wave of British artistes, djs and producers that started to come through in the early ‘90’s. Leftfield, Guerilla records, etc. That whole progressive sound was tagged as the Renaissance sound by the press."
Sasha was a close friend and key component of the night from the beginning. The whole thing was built around him, and the last 2 or 3 hrs of the night were his platform. I had only been running Renaissance for a few months when a mix tape from a completely unknown DJ from Hastings landed on my doorstep. It was, of course, John Digweed. John put music together in a really unique way and it was when i teamed him up with Sasha that the musical identity of the brand crystallised. I had the best two DJ's in the world as residents and they helped shape Renaissance’s reputation for musical integrity."
Alexander Coe (aka Sasha) and John Digweed were resident DJ's from early 1993 until late 1994. This mix attempt to capture the sound of a Sasha and John Digweed mix from very late 1993. All tracks are verified as forming part of the selections of that pair of DJ's in that year.

Roots Before Branches 04 - Renaissance 1993

Here is a rare live recording of Pete live on vinyl in 91 taken from a cassette that was stored in his loft for many years.

In 1990-1992 Pete was resident for Juice @ The Freetown Club in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent alongside his then DJ partner Kelvin Andrews every Saturday which was the forerunner to Pete's 11 year residency at the superclub Golden.

The mix heavily features tracks from U.S. producers from the likes of David Morales, Steve Silk Hurley, Maters At Work, Armando, Arthur Baker, Tyree, C&C Music Factory, Kevin Saunderson, Underground Resistance & Komix as well as many great UK productions from this fantastic era.

Pete Bromley - Live At The Freetown - Hanley - Stoke-On-Trent -1991

Finishing off an unforgettable night was one of the original Hacienda residents and good friend Buckley who played a set full of true Acid House gems from 86-89. He played 2am-4am. To be fair, he was only supposed to play 2am-3.15am and I was supposed to play the last 45 minutes. But due to getting little bit too excited (smashed out of my head) and going AWOL for an hour throwing up outside, I was unable to fulfil my duties. So Buckley for the last 45 minutes was thinking he was playing his last tune before I came on!! Not the best situation for a DJ to be in but to Buckley's credit, he did a wicked job!

I did manage to find where the decks were at 3.55am and play the last tune of the night after everyone in the place had sang me Happy Birthday....so whilst the hairs were still standing up on the back on my neck and arms, I dropped Chaka Khan - 'Ain't Nobody'! ..It was a fitting end to an unbelievable night that will live with me for the rest of my days. 

I wanted to put a party on that captured the vibe and feel of the Acid House 'Summer Of Love' days of 88-89 (the best years of my life) by hosting a rave in a warehouse! I knew it was gonna be good....but I never imagined it was gonna be THAT good. 

So a big THANK YOU goes out firstly the DJ's who gave up their time to come and play for free, and play out of their skins to boot!! But a party isn't a party without the crowd....and every single one of you deserves a massive THANK YOU...you can say you were there when we went back in time for one night only and relived those days when you lived for the weekend and it was all about the love of house music and that special vibe!!
