L.A-based producer Reza Safinia teams up with Ukrainian veteran The Organism on ‘Pandora's Sox', a quirky track which surprises at every turn.

Intertwined melodies first introduce the tune on a steady groove, that's brought to a hush by a husky acapella. That's where the full power of the tune is unleashed with a stripped-back drop sure to cause damage on the dancefloor.

Completing the release is a dub mix, where the trippy arpeggio is left aside in favour of a straight to the floor introductory groove. The prevalent drums of this alternate version highlights its distinctive textures and ad-libs.

Philip Auster & Bumppo return to Casomat with the charmingly atmospheric Kurapika EP. No strangers to the label, you may be familiar with their track 'Desiderio' which featured on the various artists Multitudes Vol. 1 released on Casomat late last year. This time they're back with a full EP, consisting of two originals together with remixes by West & Hill and label boss Schtu.

With their original tracks - 'Kurapika' and 'Overwhelming Emotions' - the Italian duo proves once again that if done correctly, a piece of music doesn't need a lot of different elements to keep one captivated for the full 6+ minutes. Sound design and arrangement are key, and if the main parts are perfect then giving them room to breathe is often the right strategy. It's certainly an artform, but it's clearly one that Philip Auster & Bumppo have perfected.

On remix duties for 'Kurapika' is Dutch DJ & producer West & Hill. Having released on esteemed labels such as Get Physical, Kindisch and Akbal, his productions are clearly in high demand and taking a listen to his remix it's easy to see why. Delicate synthwork, emotive progressions, clever arrangement - he checks all the boxes of what makes us love this kind of electronic music.

Finally, label boss Schtu provides a remix of 'Overwhelming Emotions'. While the original is sparse and minimal, Schtu adds a driving beat and a groovy bassline and creates a version perhaps more tailored to the peak-time dancefloor hours, providing a completely different vibe but without losing touch of the elements which make the original so special.

James Harcourt makes a welcome return to ICONYC. The English producer has had a prolific and hugely successful year. Releases on Siamese, Sum Over Histories, Renaissance and Sincopat have all been standouts while a memorable gig at the infamous Noisily tops a healthy tour schedule. Now as 2023 continues at a fast pace, James Harcourt lands back on ICONYC with a brand new two track EP.

The Harcourt sound is a tough thing to pin down. He is a unique act in the sense that emotionally his creations carry quite a large scope. He is not afraid to explore esoteric or introspective themes and the end result is always a compelling one. Such is the case with 'Awakening' which carries many of his most loved production hallmarks. From a warm, meaty low end to icy atmospherics and an effects storyboard to get lost in, there is certainly a lot to like. The main break is perhaps the high point, with the mood shifting from emotive to ominous with an effortless ease. It's something you rarely see and they've pulled it off beautifully here.

The companion piece 'Klug' is equally impressive, coming in with more drive and a darker feel overall. Once again, the storyboarding is unique, never quite doing what your brain thinks it will. Undisturbed and composed from an atmospheric perspective yet still with enough power and momentum to work remarkably well on the dance floor. Based around three synth motifs, one of which opens up dramatically during the main break, makes for a kaleidoscopic journey to round out the release in style. James Harcourt continues to be one of the undergrounds most sought after acts with this EP only adding to that sentiment. Highly recommended.
