For our seventeenth addition We are graced with the presence of London's own aircode, whose electronic obscurities have been found on such labels as DJ Pitch's 'Tobago Tracks' along with a recent EP on 'Alien Jams'. Julia's productions are truly worthy of being heralded by a label with the word 'alien' in the title - her work is enigmatic and astoundingly unique. It beckons notions of a faraway entity who occupied her mind and attempted to craft their world's music through her eyes using earthly soundscapes.

It is pensive and moving throughout, where aircode has used the absence of space and an unlikely palette of reverb-drenched, distant sounds to accentuate a sense of alienation. Nods to dubstep and UK-influenced genres leak through at times to reinforce the still-present movability and flow that Julia effortlessly melds into the sound design she has mastered. The tracks loop in and out of themselves, where she has broken down each track skillfully into a concise selection of resonances that undergo a perpetual sense of motion that subvert the tropes of contemporary club music. There is an uneasy air of endlessness and repetition throughout; a spiral further and further into an unknown unknown.

ABADIR's Pause/Stutter/Uh/Repeat (GEN046) is a collection of gravity-defying tension build-ups and releases, crammed grimey patterns and blasting overdriven kicks setting the stage for an acousmatic, digital treatment of the human voice as a raw sound source. Vocal snippets, elusive traces of dialogs, ghost notes between utterances, modelled or resampled choirs all form the basis of this approach. On these tracks, high definition focused sound beams, charred high-res textures are complemented by intricate drum rolls sizzling, rushing up, bending beyond their breaking point joined by the clang of metallic, synthetic objects colliding, deforming, rupturing.

The release is accompanied by a handful of remixes, including a staggering diagonalization by FRKTL, a bass heavy club ready edit by Ice_Eyes, a frenetic, bouncy reimagination by Fausto Mercier and a luminous big drum-powered rendition by ZULI.

London-based Swedish producer aircode’s debut EP on Alien Jams is ‘basically a very tired EP’.

Written throughout a year of sleep deprivation, “Effortless” reflects a period of disorientation, social claustrophobia, and the unbridled feeling of a loss of focus. A navel-gazing introspective struggle of feeling apathetic and drowsy, yet simultaneously restless and constantly moving. Fractured machine fragments and riddled sleep-deprived speech alongside manipulated drum samples, distorted guitar, are symptomatic of her captivating work in electronic experimental music so far. Using self-generated ‘logical’ melodies, unexpected rhythms, and phone and vocal recordings, the EP offers a challenging, melancholic and ever-changing aesthetic.

Piecing together spontaneous text, and moments of glitch, like an anxious machine, or someone on auto-pilot; “the tracks represent this mixture of apathy and a scattered mind,” she explains, "On the verge of hyperventilation with constantly changing rhythms as you feel your heartbeat and breath loud and out of sync. The melodies are also somewhat dipping in energy," never reaching the whole way up, but giving up and falling down.
