Sam’s EP boot’s off with ‘Chocolate’, a track that builds and builds using detuned synths, stabs and funky drums to make any dance floor erupt. ‘Domino’ is a track that’s bassline drones underneath its own distinctive synth line to keep the drums rolling along steadily. The title track ‘Black Leather’ is everything you would expect in a Drumcode record; a subtle throbbing bass line which, keeps the track moving before the synth stabs enrapture the track and twist it into a dark, throbbing composition. The final track ‘Daegon’ uses dubbed out drums to incorporate a synth melody line that will blow your socks off and rounds off this well shaped EP.

Continuing on from his Odyssey EP released in 2013, Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles creates atmosphere and space whilst exploring waves of sound and rhythm, and the power of colour. With Sonne Ryan creates music to structure itself around a pulse, rather than the pulse being the defining point. 

The title track begins with “a very subtle set of melodies that repeat almost without confidence, and then gradually give way to a huge collage of colour and power”, as Ryan describes it. Not relying on a conventional beat, it’s a prime example of how an analogue synthesiser can create the power and momentum of a rhythm section. From the distorted waves in 3 Chords, growing and shrinking, to the rhythmic waves of constant speeding up and then slowing down in Recovery, it’s the Moog Voyager, Prophet and tape delay that make up the core sound of the EP. Whilst tracks like Helios, Haunt and Think Tank see West play live drums and acoustic guitar.

“I’m often looking at art in exhibitions and I always think to myself ‘why the hell don’t I have this much colour in my work?’ The answer in part I think is down to synthesis. It is very difficult to create colour without it sounding plastic. Colour in music is both the note combinations and the actual timbre of the sounds. There are lots of instances of very colourful ambient sounds, which I took great care to create for each song, using various methods – from passing analogue synths through chains of effects to chopping up random sequences of recordings and forming tiny collages." – Ryan Lee West

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Some might be surprised that London based electronic producer Ryan Lee West, the man behind Rival Consoles, shares a home with contemporary classical composers such as Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds and Peter Broderick. And yet they have a lot more in common than expected. Fascinated by sound from an early age, Ryan chose to dedicate his time to studying, experimenting with and producing sound graduating from De Montfort University in Leicester. One consistent element in his musical journey has been his desire to create a more organic, humanised sound. Ryan often drafts early ideas on piano, violin and guitar, although the end result is much more electronic-laden. As an accomplished sound designer he has repeatedly performed at the Tate, and recently created a bespoke audio-visual performance for Boiler Room at the V&A. Ryan is currently composing music for a soon to be announced BBC production.

After supporting Luke Abbott on his recent UK tour and I Break Horses on their North American tour in spring, Ryan will debut his new live set with a special release show in London, followed by a string of West Coast U.S. dates culminating in Decibel Festival in late September – more details to be announced soon.

Foremost international techno outlet Drumcode is delighted to announce the release of its next full-length album, ‘Satellite’, by enduring Italian techno talent Sam Paganini.

Though he has been active since the mid nineties, recent years have been hugely successful for Sam, with searing techno EPs coming on revered labels such as Riche Hawtin’s Plus8, Sven Vath’s Cocoon and of course, Adam Beyer’s Drumcode. In his time he has been responsible for underground hits like ‘Zoe’, ‘Polyester’ and ‘Fire In My Arms’, all of which demonstrate his dynamic understanding of sexy, dark and hypnotic techno grooves and at the same time have earned him plenty of great Beatport chart positions as well as respect from the best in the game.

Incredibly, ‘Satellite’ is Sam’s first full-length album. Informed by his DJ gigs at legendary places like Berghain in Berlin and Cielo in New York, the album starts with a dystopian bit of sonic scene setting, as if a space ship is charging up ready to take off.

From there it’s a case of getting straight down to business. ‘Another Chance’ is a spacey bit of cantering techno and ‘White’ is rooted in devastating kick drums and is riddled with serrated synth lines that build lots of great techno pressure. ‘Down’ is an undulating bit of funky techno complete with choice vocal flourishes and tracks like ‘Lotus’ are prime offerings from the deeper end of the scale.

No two tracks sound the same on Satellite: Sam is always teasing out a new bit of texture, nailing a slightly different vibe or exploring different amounts of light and dark throughout the course of this most excellent album. This is evidenced by diverse cuts like ‘Dusty’, ‘Toxic’ and ‘Rave’.

Despite ‘Satellite’ being Sam’s debut album, it showcases his seductive style in all its glory across 12 fantastic tracks that will leave you begging for more.

La referencia 033 de Florida Music nos trae a la mente detrás del propio sello, Andrés Campo, con un EP de nombre ‘Numbers’ de cuatro tracks. Los enigmáticos títulos de cada tema son eso: números. ‘091 (Original Mix)’, ‘136 (Original Mix)’, ‘013 (Original Mix)’ y ‘006 (Original Mix)’ son los temas que componen este corto-no-tan-corto, que en líneas generales es intensamente percusivo, potente y muy físico, con toques atmosféricos y una clara progresión narrativa. Las melodías aparecen más hacia mitad del trabajo, pero acaba con la misma intensidad que al principio. Abriendo el EP tenemos ‘091 (Original Mix)’, un track con una percusión potente y suelta desde el comienzo, con unos interesantes sonidos metálicos y acuosos que acompañan el track hasta el final y que nos recuerdan al agobiante entorno de un submarino. Una bomba pistera en toda regla. Luego nos encontramos con ‘136 (Original Mix)’, un track que continúa la estela de ‘091’, comenzando con intensidad y un ritmo muy marcado, para luego dar paso toques atmosféricos y una línea de sintetizador marciana y ácida, y efectos metálicos parecidos en sensaciones a los del track que le precede. Diseñada para freír el cerebro… y las zapatillas. ‘136’ da paso a ‘013 (Original Mix)’, que tiene una percusión más apretada, de las que pegan al pecho, con aire más minimalista y toques melódicos y atmosféricos más marcados, que se van transformando a medida que progresa el track, convirtiéndose en una angustiosa melodía que acaba en una orgía sonora matemática y minimalista. Finalmente, cerrando este EP se encuentra ‘006 (Original Mix)’, que empieza más suave, pero que pronto empieza a destaparse como una genial combinación de efectos, percusión y melodías de sintetizador alienígenas, acompañado todo por esos sonidos metálicos y acuosos que recorren este trabajo con sutileza del primer al último tema. Todo con un tratamiento de las teclas impecable por parte de Andrés Campo. En resumen, otro completísimo trabajo por parte del jefe de Florida Music.

LENSKE’s first release by Farrago, “Risin”, comes packing high velocity punches, including a collaboration with Amelie Lens and a remix from Kobosil. The EP’s A side is packed near 12 minutes of crisp machine driven techno with Farrago’s rattling peak-time “The Riddler” being the first to puncture. The title track, “Risin”, will only be released as the Kobosil remix, a titanium tour of auditory horrors, which also borrows from the EP’s other tracks. Lens’ signature sultry vocal samples on the B side’s “Jealousy” draw the contours of a jaw grinding banger, while “Hidden Power” rounds out the release with a blaring dance floor siren encased in exquisitely unpredictable arrangement. The relentless stride of Northern Electronics can be put down to the attitudes of its owners, Anthony Linell and Jonas Rönnberg. Their collaborative project, Ulwhednar, has been shapeshifting at the centre of the label since its inception, and has captured their hard line electronics in its many guises.

Following on from 2017's 'Modern Silver', their new album reprises the intensity by grappling with its themes from a refreshed perspective. Crossing Norrland, the northernmost part of Sweden, and graffiti incidents and exploits, 'Razor Mesh Fencing' tracks the fervour of operations left undercover with blistering rhythmic pieces.

With only brief moments of respite on 'Razor Mesh Fencing' its stamina perpetually keeps us on the edge. Winding around its paths, our escape is in its adrenal crescendo.

Ulwhednar - Through Gates of Ice

‘Paul’s Horizon’ – @Ryan-Elliott’s first EP in six years – falls musically between Berlin and Detroit, between house and techno and between hypnotic repetition and unpredictability, revealing a subtle ear for groove and composition.

It’s the DJ’s perspective that has informed the Berghain / Panorama Bar resident's own analogue productions, with ‘Paul’s Horizon’ turning its focus toward deep and slick percussion. This is apparent from the get-go, with the title track’s triangle/clap interplay, funky 5-6 kicks per bar, and bleary-eyed atmosphere. From there “Martinsville Morning” slows down into an understated sunrise groover, led by bassline, strings and pads. EP closer “Grafton Road” turns up the pace again with gasps for hats, aggressive punctuating snares, and a modulating synth bubbling-up throughout.

German music maestro Florian Kruse is next up on Sasha's imprint Last Night On Earth with an incredible package featuring two original tracks and an unbelievably good rework from Julian Wassermann.

'The Tide Is Turning' is a solid atmospheric techno builder, with a beautifully deep rolling groove. Soft modulated arp lines pan the stereo field, growing in velocity and resonance, around minimal percussion and a round full bass line.

Florian makes wonderful use of progressive percussive movements in the track 'Zog', flowing through different hi hats and syncopated hits, adding pace and varied textures. Drone pads float in and out of the track as it peaks and drops alongside a chunky stabbed topline, creating a brilliantly dynamic sound.

'Zog' then gets a hefty remix from Julian Wassermann who injects a wickedly dominant beat, tonnes of creative synth work and glitchy textures. Solid work.
