A terrific pop tune opens this week's list from Sweden's Tyred Eyes. That's followed by Mattiel's latest indie rocker, before we get into another electronic/jazz fusion from Shabaka Hutchings' The Comet is Coming. Then it's back to indie, with a touch of electro and trance from Japan's The fin. Then it's off to drum and bass territory for Pinty which gives way to Jordan Rakei's latest R&B/Soul offering. Brighton's Loyal take things a bit more funky (shades of Jungle), before going down under for a fine, thumping EDM remix of Rufus Du Sol. Things then wind down with the ambient sounds of Johannes Albert before wrapping up with the gentle guitar noodlings of Or Sobre Blau (Andeu G. Serra and Kiran Leonard). Track of the week is a very tough choice: Rufus Du Sol is very good indeed, and The Comet is Coming is excellent, but Tyred Eyes' "Estuary" does it for me. My favourite song of 2019 (so far).

I love flipping samples. It’s in my DNA as a hip hop DJ even when I’m exploring other genres. The Bootleg Series is a way for me to share some quick track ideas without worrying about the motions of clearances. A little while back I was watching the Bobbito Garcia documentary Rock Rubber 45s and recognized a song in the background. I knew it was sampled in some rap records but I decided to make a house track out of it. And there you have it.

Brighton, UK collective LOYAL have always injected a dose of disco into their production, but on their new single "Crave It Still" they embrace the classic style more than ever and add a splash of soul. The track leans into 1970s New York disco with a funky bass-line, syncopated guitar rhythms, glassy keys, cascading string stabs, and soaring anthemic vocals. Throughout their discography LOYAL have gradually exchanged standard house structures and digital-heavy production for organic instrumentation and groove, their deftly layered compositions nodding at genres like R&B, indie rock, pop, and funk along the way. "Crave It Still" marks LOYAL's arrival at a fully realized retro style, but glimpses their earlier house records as it culminates with blipping synths and a thumpy kick.

LOYAL say of the song, "Lyrically, 'Crave It Still' started as a poem, a stream of consciousness about craving nothing in particular; maybe a lost love, a drug, a partner you shouldn't be with but can't help going back to. We held the poem in our back-pocket for a while, then eventually fashioned the New York disco sound while we were on our first-ever writing trip to the city itself. We recorded in a beautiful studio tucked away in an industrial park in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, alongside some fantastic local writers and musicians. They laid out a killer foundation, all New York, and we built from there." 

"Crave It Still" is the third single off LOYAL's forthcoming EP, following the ambient, Fleetwood Mac-inspired "Patterns That Fall" and "Everything (She)," a disco-house / pop-funk hybrid that glimmers with fresh energy and a hint of nostalgia. 

James Day, Laurence Allen, and Alex Cowan formed LOYAL in 2016, springing to life with the critically lauded debut single "Blue & The Green" (released via London label GOOD YEARS - the folks behind BANKS, Lil Silva, and Yellow Days). They first started expanding their line up with "House For You," when they teamed up with local Brighton artist Beth Molly Moore. The collaborative experiment was a success and eventually led the project to function as a collective with seven members.

Originally the song was an improvised, acoustic piano piece I used to play at the live shows. It was born out of a happy accident while we were soundchecking for a concert and Mohna was improvising vocals to the piano. After we had played it a few times live I decided to record it. The song has changed completely from its initial acoustic version.

‘Meant To Be’ is a track I wrote about all the people I’ve seen on the edge of either starting a relationship, or ending one. As a stubborn over-thinker myself, I’ve been on both sides of this and, in either situation, have always overly complicated things for myself. There’s a lot of unnecessary noise when you’re constantly wondering whether a person is the right one for you. This song is a reminder to just let these things happen, enjoy the moments you share with others, and be free.  As always, I truly hope you enjoy.

"Kyan muses on our dystopian culture of fear in new single “Neighbours”
It might be hard for Kyan to top his 2018 – hey, we can't all get studio time with Nile Rodgers! – but astounding new single "Neighbours" suggests he's willing to try.

"Neighbours" is a track tense in its minimalism, building drama through judicious sparcity. Kyan's distinctive voice is flanked by ominous bass and distant, echoing backing vocals as it arcs toward a menacing electronic break in place of a chorus. Even this suspenseful segment stays somewhat subdued – it's certainly not overwrought, yet is nonetheless hair-raising in its distant menace.

"'Neighbours' observes a world in which we increasingly fear one another – 'This room is the only thing we trust, because the TV says the world up there is still too dangerous,'" Kyan explains, quoting the track's lyrics. "It's a record that provides a glimpse at the slightly dystopian but not too distant future.

"The song began when I realised I was constantly being bombarded by negativity on social media. I started to wonder if social media was an ally of terrorism in order to promote fear agendas and gain votes or push a particular narrative. I wondered where would Brexit or Trump be without the fear that allowed their ideology to exist and then to flourish on such a scale."

Kyan's first headline show of 2019 takes place at Bermondsey Social Club on 24 April.

1993 is the intro track off my EP. The idea behind the song came from my initial love of dance music. I was in the 1st grade when I heard Daft Punk’s ‘One More Time’ playing on MTV for the first time and instantly fell in love. To this day it’s still a song I can play over and over, and 1993 is an homage to dance music and what I felt when I first heard it. oh and ya 1993 was the year i was born.
