Soundway present a very limited vinyl-only re-issue of an obscure LP by the enigmatic Nigerian artist Easy Kabaka Brown. The LP was originally released and recorded by Philips / Phonogram in 1976 and only sold in very small numbers. Musically it's a intriguing mix of mostly Nigerian highlife with a bit of afro-jazz sung in the language of Kalabari from the Delta region of Southern Nigeria.  From the bouncy good times of Belema to the deeper extended afro workout of Agboho this unique album stands out from thousands of others of it's time with a sound of its own that draws on many influences, with Congolese and latin touches to jazz trumpet and psychedelic organ lines.

Easy Kabaka Brown (Opotopo was his nickname) was a versatile and eccentric musician who recorded two full length albums (this is the first) and only a couple of 45s. We at Soundway have deemed this record way too sweet  to be forgotten, only to gradually ebb away and disappear with time. It's a record that will give you a golden, warm feeling. Your toes will tap, your face should smile and it certainly deserves to be heard by far more than only the few hundred people who bought it nearly 40 years ago. Strictly limited to 1000 x 180g vinyl copies and released in a rigid paste-on sleeve, these will not last long so don't sleep!

« Bofou Safou » est le nom donné en bambara (la langue nationale du Mali) aux garçons nonchalants qui préfèrent danser que travailler. Un grand mix conçu en forme de voyage autour de trente ans d’afro-disco et confié à James Stewart, DJ spécialisé dans les musiques africaines, résident au Sucre de Lyon, co-organisateur des soirées Black Atlantic Club, mais surtout membre du Voilaaa Sound System.

Un Sound System à la manière de ceux de Nothing Hill Gate et construit autour de la personnalité hors-norme du lyonnais Bruno Hovart (aka Patchworks) qui depuis plus de quinze ans fait danser et vivre la world music. Notamment avec Voilaaa un projet pétillant qui revisite l’afro-disco des années 70 et qui a offert récemment au classique « Je pense à toi » d’Amadou & Mariam une relecture dancefloor absolument irrésistible.

Une mixtape qui parcourt trente années d’afro-dance où se télescopent figures incontournables et disques rares, les années 2010 comme les 70, des expérimentations électroniques de William Oneyabor à la voix ensorcelante d’Oumou Sangaré, des percus en folie d’Eric Cosaque à l’ultra-funky Livy Ekemezie, du groovy Voilaaa au classique Mory Kanté, se permettant même de subtiles excursions vers la cumbia et le zouk. Sans perdre de vue évidemment Amadou et Mariam, fil conducteur de cette mixtape qui atteste en dansant que l’influence du duo sur le revival et l’engouement actuel autour des musiques africaines, et surtout de l’afro-disco-funk, n’est plus à prouver. Eux qui furent parmi les premiers à déchiffrer de nouveaux territoires pour les musiques africaines et à se frotter aux mélanges les plus pop et électroniques.

A dear friend of Mawimbi, James Stewart is a talented DJ and producer hailing from Lyon, France, where he hosts his residency "Black Atlantic Club" at the much praised club Le Sucre. 

James just released his first solo EP on Alma Negra Records. Featuring a wide array of guests and musicians (Peter Solo, Bruno Patchworks, Jacob and Martha Mafuleni), "Cotonou" is an impressive and promising debut from one of France's fiercest defender of tropical music.

This mix features all tracks from "Cotonou" as well as a lot of biguine, gwo-ka, highlife, chimurenga, konono style, balani, afro-Latin & jazz gems that inspired the making of this EP.

Entretien avec Manu Dibango réalisé en 2012, en public, sur la Scène de Cybele pour Jazz à Vienne à l’initiative de Benjamin Tanguy (un grand merci à lui pour l’invitation). Le lendemain le festival proposait une carte blanche à cette immense artiste camerounais qui aura traversé une bonne partie du 20e siècle, son ténor et ses compositions à la main : la colonisation, les indépendances, l’afro-centrisme afro-américain, le jazz, la soul, les musiques africaines de la rumba congolaise au renouveau du makossa camerounais et j’en passe… J’ai laissé l’entretien dans son entièreté, et dans l’ordre en essayant d’illustrer par des passages de sa discographie qui correspondent le plus possible à ce dont nous sommes en train de parler. Evidemment, le choix des morceaux est tout à fait subjectif…je garde le souvenir d’un grand bonhomme, d’une grande humanité, d’une grande humilité et d’un sourire ravageur. Paix à son âme.

James Stewart is DJ host and programmator for the Black Atlantic club monthly party at Le Sucre in Lyon. He’s active member and programmer for the collective Palmwine Records, he is the founder of the blog Afrosouldescarga and hosts radio shows devoted to Black Atlantic music on Radio Nova Lyon LYL Radio & Radioshic. He also gives lectures on the subject. Producer, percussionist, his first EP, Cotonou, was issue on Alma Negra label the 8th of june 2018. His new EP "Atlantic river drive" has been issue last october on Mawimbi Records. He also has a single, "Nolias" on the label "On the Corner Records" UK.
