Collaborative pairings often bring a frisson of excitement in the world of music production, particularly when an established artist and comparative newcomer join forces. "The Version" EP from Sapiens and Springa brings that thrill to Particles.

From the Bauhaus inspired buildings of the 1930s on the Mediterranean coastline, Tel Aviv resident, Alon Shapiro, has been immersed within the culture of music, spending a decade honing his production persona. Now debuting that production talent through his Sapiens moniker, the Israeli producer builds upon recent success. Trained in classical piano from an early age, a subsequent vinyl addiction and the joy of music stemming from the art of the 'mixtape', Sapiens found an eclectic passion for "intelligent, underground genres" ultimately distilled into a love of pioneering electronic that included Jean Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk and The Orb. Academic studies in music production followed as did gigs at local clubs and venues in the mid 2000s before the Sapiens name took hold in 2006. A portfolio of work has subsequently flowed leading to work signed for Baroque, Suffused Music and Stellar Fountain.

Although the name Springa has an outward appearance of a newcomer to the underground dance movement, Mattias Lindblom is a name firmly entrenched in the modern music industry through an integral part played in the Swedish outfit, Inkfish. A man of incomparable production pedigree, Lindblom has seen his work signed to a vast collection of blue chip labels including over 250 signed to Inkfish's own successful, eponymously named imprint. Launching the Springa production alter ego through a remix of Mistol Team for Baroque in 2014, 2015 has proved a successful year for Lindblom as Springa has seen further work signed for Mistique Music and Pangea. Furthermore work for System Recordings including a remix of Sapiens himself, set the duo up for exciting collaborative work that now manifests itself fully in "The Version".

An EP arranged into two distinct halves, "Introversion" and "Extroversion" supply a pair of opening salvos wrapped around a common percussive narrative and musical themes. "Introversion" opens proceedings with a metronomic bass line that fires off the rhythmic section with intelligence while a series of musical motifs, riffs and stabs provide an elegant contribution. A driving, pulsating affair, "Extroversion" quickly finds its feet with a spine-tingling bass line progression that dominates the melodic direction. A clever vocal cut weaves its way in and out in a variety of guises that are reminiscent of classic progressive house tunes of yesteryear to crate an aura of intrigue and nostalgia.

Taking vocal cues from its "Extroversion" counterpart, "April Heart" continues the bass line dominance of its predecessor as it growls and filters its way over the opening movements in emotive fashion. Evolving purposefully in the breakdown and beyond, a delicious arpeggio riff opens up the upper frequency spectrum with delightful fashion to create a driving, vibrant work. A stripped back "Dub Mix" minus the vocal component completes an impressive picture.

A quartet of tracks from Sapiens and Springa demonstrates a striking common purpose through "The Version".

Serbian duo, Beat Maniacs lit up the late Particles summer with an EP of charismatic intensity. Now the twin-track, "Gravitas" returns to the autumn catalogue with a pair of new remixes from the southern hemisphere.

DJ and producer, Kieran Krohn, from the Sydney metropolis, has shone a spotlight on the Australian east coast with his impressive song writing and craft through his Verve production soubriquet. Fusing together a variety of different genres and musical styles, "tech, trance and techno" are combined with consummate ease to create a new and distinctive sound that epitomises the Verve musical ethos. A regular on a host of impressive underground imprints, the Verve name has been allied to such notable names as Lowbit, Mango Alley and Visceral. A host of production credits can also be found on Krohn's own FutureForm label that has gone from strength to strength, guided by the Australian's keen ear.

A regular on both the Proton Music and Particles labels, the "Foundations" EP for the former was a 2016 highlight, while the "Fusion" EP for Particles complete with remixes from Inkfish and Danny Bonnici, stands as a timeless classic. Now returning to the label, the Verve remix of "Gravitas" is a deliciously groove-laden affair that bristles with percussive dynamism and clip-clop hits. A sublime trademark bass line hits its stride early on while a chorus of pads and melodic textures supply delicacy and hypnotic intensity in equal measure. Converging in an eloquent breakdown, the latter stages are marked by a standout filtered bass variation and driving dance floor credentials.

Born in Argentina and fully ensconced in London's microclimate, Tomas Crow is an accomplished musician in both piano and guitar and who has performed for a variety of rock acts during his illustrious career. A relative latecomer to the electronic music scene, Tomas has lost no time in becoming a sought after and highly regarded name in the underground dance environment. Already scoring success under the Rockin' Beats pseudonym with appearances on Hernan Cattaneo's "Sudbeats 3" compilation, a debut for Stellar Fountain under his Tomas Crown alter-ego, remixing CJ Peeton in May 2016, was then followed by the superlative "Birdsplace" EP for Cid Inc.'s Replug. The twin track EP laid the foundations for a successful foray into the underground scene in 2016 as 2017 looks set to further extend Tomas' reach to the upper echelons of dance music's elite.

Remixing "Vol Pour Hernano", Tomas Crow's Particles debut is an assured affair. A strong beat and urgent percussive hi-hats pave the way for a clever reimagining of Beat Maniacs' original by adding an emotive lead line and menacing vocal textures. Rising and falling with consummate ease to create dance floor energy, Tomas's skill is to create an entirely new melodic direction and vibe by extracting elements of the original's melodic component and turning them on their head to create a new direction and flavour with skill and poise.

A pair of new remixes from Verve and Tomas Crow have ably illustrated the "Gravitas" within Beat Maniacs' work.

Exclusive WhoMadeWho 'I Don't Know (Stereocalypse Remix)'

Set off by a simple and consistent bassline, a tangible drum beat, we are lured into the 7:51 track with a steady grate of percussion followed by a gradual interpolation of electronic application. Complex strata of organic and synthetic sounds emerge fluidly and ascend into a harmonious climax, which with the brief omission of the dominant drum beat, preludes into the first vocal at exactly one minute. A beautiful interchange between instrumental and vocal and Stereocalypse’s dextrous play of diminishing and aggrandizing elements to draw on and draw out the emotions of the original track, are the vim and vigor of this remix. Through a firm and innovative control of tempo and complexity, the remix accentuates the turbulent emotional implications of the track’s lyrics, making it more poignant. WhoMadeWho’s provocative music videos are the icing on the cake to their music, adding the third dimension to their exceptional lyrics and sound. In their remix of I Don’t Know, Stereocalypse’s adds the right elements that bring listeners as close to an audio-visual experience as possible. Hence, there is no wonder that what WhoMadeWho bandmember Tomas Barfod identified as 'a very mellow remix', continues to infiltrate dance floors. Barfod, co-producer of the track had already said it best: 'It somehow turns out to be quite euphoric when played in the club.'

Stereocalypse's remix for WhoMadeWho was released on September 1st, 2017 on Embassy Of Music.

Their own label, built with no creative boundaries, Radau is a playground where the Berlin quartet remove all limits and expectations and dig deep into the mindset and experimentalism that united them in the first place. 'Frequent Tendencies' sets the scene perfectly. A loosely hewn sliver of emotion constructed just a smidgeon off grid, there's a natural momentum as we're thrust deep inside a vociferous synth hook that rises unapologetically, gradually taking us to a surprise pivot. From here the articulation switches, a whole layer of weight and emphasis on the riff opens up and your crowd won't just elevate, they'll levitate. With plenty more music due on both Radau and beyond, it seems GHEIST's impeccable acceleration over the last two years will continue for a long time to come.
