Having already delivered two sun-kissed collaborations, longstanding Eskimo DJ/producer George Bakalakos AKA NTEIBINT & fellow Athenian Matina Sous Peau return to the label with ‘What You Need’, another effortlessly light & breezy sounding disco-house number backed by remixes from Tensnake and Spiller.

“‘What You Need’ is the kind of ballad that you can dance to on a sweet, warm summer night. It’s an echo of the disco sounds of the past, and Matina has the perfect voice for this kind of song, so producing this track and working with her again was a real labour of love,” says George.

The result is the kind of track that would sound perfectly at home both soundtracking a boat party in the Adriatic and livening up the daytime playlist on the radio. A vibrant, catchy number that ably combines a pop sensibility with on point club production and a surprisingly introspective theme.

“The song itself is actually about looking within,” explains Matina. “It’s about an inner search during which you discover yourself, and where everything that stands true for you is suddenly revealed in a flash”.

Having previously worked on together on the soulful ‘Love Is Everywhere’ and the classic disco of ‘Back to the Roots of Love’, ‘What You Need’ completes a stunning trilogy for the two Greek artists, exploring and updating the club sounds of the past, reshaping them into something fresh and modern. Now as we head into Autumn Eskimo Recordings have tapped up acclaimed producers Tensnake and Spiller to provide two remixes.

Wisely keeping Matina's vocals intact, Tensnake replaces the original's echo of 70s disco with something that nods more to the early 80s proto-house works of producers like Mark Kamins and François Kevorkian. Built around a looping synth melody and a solid 4/4 beat, with requisite 80s snares of course, Tensnake teases us with a bubbling synth bass line that suddenly explodes into hands in the air euphoria three minutes before switching back to a more sophisticated shuffle.

Following on from ‘The Owner’ released last year, NTEIBINT and Stella join forces once again to bring their elegant sound to Eskimo Recordings with ‘Hide In’. Industry veteran Ewan Pearson is in to remix inducing an acid flare. 

https://soundcloud.com/ewan-pearson is a man whose talents cover all corners of the industry, from being a DJ and engineer to a published academic and magazine columnist. Over the years he’s worked with huge names including The Rapture, Tracey Thorn, M83, Delphic and currently with Jagwar Ma. 

https://soundcloud.com/nteibint reveals that “originally ‘Hide In’ was a slow and melancholic ballad, with pompous synths supporting Stella's beautiful vocals. I revisited the original recordings and started deconstructing and rebuilding the song using a live bass as the foundation of the track. ‘Hide In’ is essentially a love song you can dance to!”

NTEIBINT is the musical alter ego of Greek producer George Bakalakos. The gifted producer is known for lush, sonic soundscapes that are masterfully constructed taking the listener to new dimensions. George Bakalakos is also the host of a daily radio show on the Athenian radio station En Lefko 87.7.

Stella (née Stella Chronopoulou) is a pop singersongwriter and musician also based in Greece. Her debut album was released in February 2015 on Inner Ear. Acclaimed by listeners and critics alike, it became one of the most successful Greek indie albums of 2015.

Over the course of 2 albums Tim Bernhardt, aka Satin Jackets, has firmly established himself as one of the biggest names of the nu-disco scene today. Where the original of 'Love Is Everywhere’ bathed in the luxurious warm sounds of the seventies, Tim’s remix takes the track in more of a synth-led direction with Matina’s vocals left to shine amongst a shimmering bed of sparkling notes, lush pads and smooth disco beats.

Prolific disco/house producer James Curd is perhaps one of the undersung heroes of the scene. With hundreds of production credits to his name on every label worth its salt from DFA Records to Classic Music Company to Permanent Vacation to Lumberjacks In Hell — and of course, Exploited — he has serious skin in the game. It’s finally time for his debut album to make its mark on the world, rounding up 14 of his finest moments to date for Exploited and packaging them up into one joyous blend.
“‘Taken All This Time’ is a catalog of music that stays true to my life growing up in my critical formative years in Chicago” he explains. “I used to make tracks from beginning to end on an MPC2000. I had a studio in my room that was set up on a door that was held up by two overturned trash cans. If I was recording on the mic I had to shut my windows because I lived on the third floor above 90/94. Sometimes I would get WGCI bleeding into my speakers while I was trying to work. It was the best of times. I worked at a record store called Supreme most days. Then I would work on music till late and head out to the club. I had a residency with Derrick Carter, Gene Farris and Diz. I made so much music — especially in the brutal winters.”
You wouldn’t know that much of this record was made in the depths of winter, given the warm, balmy vibe that surrounds much of it. With his magical synth wizardry cutting against jazzy keys, disco/funk basslines, and sublime vocals, it’s a beautiful mix of sounds that is at home on the dancefloor as on the home stereo. Each track contains elements built on his MPC, with all keys, vintage synths, guitars and bass played live. “ In a time where so much music is pieced together by sample packs and drum loops this album is created brick by brick.... or beat by beat. Every keyboard sound was played on an actual keyboard in my studio. Guitars and bass were played in.”
The album draws its influences from ‘70s disco, ‘80s boogie and ‘90s deep house in equal measure, serving as a musical document of Curd’s upbringing. Beautiful vocals are provided by a diverse cast of singers and rappers, including Bear Who? Luke Million, Likasto, Natasha Lillith and KE, with other collaborative moments featuring Fred Everything and Karmon.
The prolific producer has previously worked with James Murphy for a release on his DFA Records label, and works on many film, TV and video game score projects, including for the ‘Grand Theft Auto’ series and 50 Cent’s show ‘The Oath’. But right now, it’s all about this beautiful collection of tracks, providing a milestone in his career that he will be able to look back on very proudly in years to come.
Single and Album artworks were done by James' friend Cody Hudson who is a Chicago based artist known for his graphic design contributions under the name Struggle Inc. and for the production of clean, multi-dimensional graphics, Cody's design aesthetic is part urban modernism, and part organic visual deconstruction.
His graphic work and paintings have been exhibited throughout the US, Europe and Japan including the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), New Image Art (LA), Rocket Gallery (Tokyo), The Lazy Dog (Paris), & Andrew Rafacz (Chicago).
